i've gotten pets quite a bit but i've also got a lot more tokens.

i havent gotten the kelp dog from the forest, just by trade if thats what you mean
otherwise i have tons of the pastel one!

and only three (?) token pets.

All of a second i'm getting purple kelp dogs. But i mean i still got the orange kelp doggo so i'm pretty happy. Now i'm just getting rope and purple kelp dogs though.

Is the princess lion cub an existing pet from the past like most other npcs? I don't recall and when I first saw her I was looking forward to the chance of getting a royal family of merlions like the medieval fair and dreamland one.
