The biggest change since it was first released is that the Gyms are different!

Before, Gyms could hold 10 Pokemon. The Pokemon in the Gym were ordered from lowest CP to highest CP and you fought them in that order. You had to level up the Gyms by battling ones of your own team and with each level until 10 there would be room for another Pokemon, so it was difficult to put 10 Pokemon in a Gym. You had to take down the levels of enemy Gyms by battling them and with each level it goes down, the lowst CP Pokemon would be removed.

Now, Gyms can only hold 6 Pokemon. They don't need to level up first to make room for new Pokemon. Only one of each Pokemon species is allowed in a Gym, so you won't see all-Dragonite Gyms. The order of Pokemon you fight is first Pokemon in the Gym to latest. All of the Pokemon in a Gym have a "motivation" bar. When the motivation reaches 0, the Pokemon is removed from the Gym. You feed Pokemon with raz berries in Gyms of your own team to keep the motivation bars up, and you battle enemy Pokemon to bring the bars down.

You now only get coins when one of your Pokemon have been removed from a Gym, and the amount is based on how long the Pokemon was in the Gym for IIRC.

Also there are Raids. Raids show up at Gyms. Basically, a high CP Pokemon will show up in a Gym and you gather with people from all teams to battle it together. If you bring it's HP down before the timer ends, you get a bunch of prizes and you have a shot to catch the Pokemon. You need a raid pass to enter a raid, and you only get one free raid pass every day.

Like Pokestops, all gyms have a disc that you can spin to get items. You get an extra item if the Gym is from the same team as you. You get your daily free raid pass from Gyms.

Oh, and of course right now, Articuno and Lugia are showing up in Raids, so you can have a chance to catch those if you're lucky to find a Legendary raid with a bunch of people and win it.

I am pretty sure that I will be away in Europe for most if not all of Zapdos' spawning, which is the bird I want the most. Also my town is small so I doubt I'll be able to find anyone to help me catch Articuno/Moltres/Lugia.

Razzberries are just the first in the order but you can choose others. ^^

So I live in a kinda small town and finally a Lugia raid pops up and it's near my house

I went over to get it and???? There was an actual group there??? So we fought it and won and then it froze and I am really salty rn

I guess it's good to know that there are still groups with strong players that go out?

I have the worst luck >~< The day after I hit level 30, I crushed my phone underneath my broken armchair, and it split in two. Guess that's just my sad life haha, but no more Pokémon GO until I get a new Android. I had just set up a whole group chat for all my high-level BFFs too, but I guess they're going on a raid soon anyway. The moral of this story is; make sure you keep hold of your phones!

On the bus home from work I noticed a Lugia raid that must have only recently popped up since the timer was at 1:40 hrs. I got off my bus early to check it out and nobody was there yet, so I made a post about it on my local PoGo Facebook group and sure enough, eventually I was in a team of about 13 people.

So the first time we battled it we got it down to just a sliver of HP, but since about a third of the teams' games crashed during the raid, we just didn't have enough manpower to finish it before the time ran out. Luckily, everyone decided to stay for round 2, and we got it that time.

I got six balls and didn't manage to catch it. >.< Better luck next time I hope.

When I was almost home, my two 10k eggs hatched. Got my first Elekid and Larvitar. It's bittersweet. I'm really happy with my two new dex entries (just need Magby to finish my baby collection), but I was really hoping for an Aerodactyl. Oh well.

Hm, looks like my friend and I are going to try and go out tomorrow to find and Articuno raid.
We'll see if he ends up bailing on me or not this time.

Welp there was a lugia raid in the very center of my city.
I called someone I know who is playing, and she brought her boyfriend. We sat there and waited for almost a full hour hoping someone more would show up, but nothing. Needless to say that a lvl31 and two lvl26 didn't even come close.

it just feels so hopeless now. I have seen 3 lugia raids and 1 articuno and they feel taunting. I know I'll never get them.. sigh.
