Crowstorm woke early that morning. He was in a good mood - a really good mood - for whatever reason. He didn't know why, but he couldn't stop smiling. It was just one of those days, he guessed. No one else was awake yet, so the tom padded around the camp for a little while, content with simply listening to the birds and watching the sunrise. Such a perfect morning it was. So perfect - everything was just perfect. "Hi there," a purr sounded from behind him. Smiling as he instantly recognized the voice, Crowstorm turned and touched his nose to Daisyskip's. "Good morning. How did you sleep?" he purred. "Pretty well, thanks," she mewed happily. "You're awake awfully early." The black warrior chuckled a little. "I don't know why, honestly, I just woke up and couldn't get back to sleep. For some reason I just feel like today is gonna be a good day...." he trailed off, staring out of the camp at the rising sun. Daisyskip smiled and followed his gaze. The two sat there together watching the sunrise and simply enjoying each other's company for a while. Daisyskip was always happy whenever she was around Crowstorm. He could always make her laugh and cheer her up and he didn't stare at the place where her right eye had been like others did. He didn't care if her eye was missing and always said she was the most beautiful she-cat he'd ever seen, which certainly warmed her heart. For a while now she had been waiting for him to ask her to be his mate. She had been considering asking him herself but was way too nervous about it. As if hearing her thoughts, Crowstorm suddenly blurted out, "Will you be my mate?" before quickly looking down at his paws with a bit of embarrassment. Daisyskip gasped before exclaiming, "Yes! Yes, yes, yes, oh yes!! Of course I will! Yes!" Then a chorus of muffled giggling sounded behind them. The two turned to see Daisyskip's family standing there at the warriors' den's entrance. "What?! What are you doing?" the cream tabby questioned as she bounded over to her mother and brothers. "How long were you..?" Foxpounce chuckled, "Oh, I just heard you two talking so I decided to wake Birch and mom up to see if that was gonna happen." "About time, too," Birchwing added. Honeydapple had the biggest grin on her face as she leaned forward to touch her nose to her daughter's. She was so happy - so happy that Daisyskip found someone.

"Can I leave this stinky place yet?" Adder grumbled, wrinkling her nose at the stench that arose from Appleheart removing the cobweb bound around her former loner's leg. The cobweb was soaked with herb juices which had created such a pungent odor. The ginger tom gave a slight chuckle, "Hang on, let me take a look at it." After he had cleaned the wound of all the herbs and cobwebs, he inspected it carefully, looking for any signs of infection setting in. "Alright, you're good to go." "Finally!" the tortoiseshell breathed as she leapt to her paws and dashed out of the medicine den. With the irritable young warrior out of the way, Appleheart turned his attention to Frostpath. "How are you feeling?" he queried as he looked over her injuries, his eyes clouding with concern. The white she-cat only shrugged, and Appleheart frowned at this. They didn't have anymore cobwebs in the herb storage - they had all been used on Webfang and Adder's injuries, so he was worried about Frostpath. The marigold was working to stop infections and a bit of the bleeding, but not all of it, and the poppy seeds had helped her to calm down. They needed cobwebs. Willowcloud had left early in the morning to search for some and Appleheart had stayed behind to keep an eye on the warrior. He began to pace around the den nervously.

Dewpaw lay near the back of the apprentices' den, watching his siblings play with the others. He felt so unwanted, so out of place. He had been hoping that after she became an apprentice, Russetpaw would cease her taunting - but she didn't. The young tom had no idea why it was 'weird' or 'creepy' for his eyes to be different colors, but his sister was bent on convincing the others to avoid him. 'If his eyes are all messed up, StarClan knows what else is wrong with him! Could be why he's so grumpy all the time,' she'd say. Words cannot express how deeply hurt he felt inside, so alone and abandoned. Weren't his siblings supposed to be the ones who look after him and always stay by his side? He didn't know what he'd done to make his sister act such a way. It was mornings like this that when the sun was out and the birds were singing and everyone was happy, he'd sit in the apprentices' den all alone and try to sleep for as long as possible, dreading leaving the safety of the den and being out in the openness of the camp where Russetpaw would surely see him and think up another taunt for him. It was times like this that when he'd see all the other apprentices frolicking about in the camp, having fun, he'd begin to cry quietly, knowing that he would not be welcomed. He just didn't understand and would want to let all his emotions out in a scream, but knew he couldn't, for it would draw so much more unneeded attention. Suddenly Frigidrose poked her head inside the den, and Dewpaw quickly made an effort to regain his composure, wiping a paw over his face in an attempt to dry the few fresh tears. "What do you want?" he mumbled, just barely audible. The warrior tilted her head to the side a bit. "Dewpaw, are you okay?" she queried gently in the soft voice that only a mother has. The apprentice sent her a slight glare before returning his gaze to his paws. "Yeah, sure, I'm definitely okay." Frigidrose frowned and stepped carefully into the den, sitting down next to her apprentice and wrapping her tail around him. "Is it Russetpaw?" Dewpaw didn't speak for fear that his voice would crack and gave a small nod. The she-cat sighed lightly and licked the top of his head. "I don't know why she's doing this either. Soon enough she's bound to realize just how mouse-brained she is, don't worry. "But what if she doesn't stop?" Dewpaw whimpered quietly. "I-I don't get it. My eyes are different colors - so what? It doesn't affect who I am, does it?" Frigidrose gave a small smile. "You're exactly right. It doesn't affect who you are at all." She paused a moment before continuing, "Sometimes others just have to pick on someone, and only StarClan knows why. But you'll show them." Her big pale green eyes stared into the apprentice's odd ones. "You'll certainly show them. Wouldn't you want them to understand just how hurt, how betrayed you feel?" He didn't speak for a moment, taking it all in, pondering each and every of her words. Finally, a quiet but firm meow came from him, "Yes." A broad smile found its way onto Frigidrose's face. "Alright then. Oh, Ashenclaw wanted us to patrol - are you up for it?" Her words having given him a little more confidence, Dewpaw nodded with a smile.

"Good morning, Honeydapple," Emberstar purred to the cream warrior as she finished her breakfast of mouse. "Oh, hello, Emberstar! How are you this morning?" Honeydapple replied, giving her chest fur a lick before getting to her paws. "I'm well, thank you. I came to ask how Breezepaw and Cinderpaw's training is going? I know they're the age of being appointed warriors, and I wanted to know if you think they're ready," the leader meowed. She hadn't seen much of Frigidrose's kits lately. Either they were out training or on a patrol, always somewhere she couldn't find them. She was curious to see how they were doing, knowing that their mother had apparently moved on after mourning her lost daughter for so long. Hoping not to appear to have anything against the former queen, Emberstar was eager to promote the two apprentices to warriors. They deserved it after all - they were training hard and were fourteen moons old already and hadn't caused the Clan any havoc with their mother having been so enraged by Shadekit's death. "Yes, yes, they're both doing wonderfully!" Honeydapple purred happily. "They have finished their final training session. I believe they are ready." Emberstar smiled. "Great. Why don't we all go on a hunting patrol together so I can see for myself how they're doing?" The cream warrior nodded eagerly. "Yes, that would be fantastic! I'll go fetch them and Cloudtalon."

Breezepaw and her brother were sitting at the entrance of the apprentices' den, watching as the other older apprentices left the camp to train. Breezepaw kneaded the ground anxiously with her claws. It had been a couple moons since she and Cinderpaw had completed their fourth training session - why weren't they warriors yet? Was Emberstar still upset with their mother? Why would she take it out on them? It was so unfair, she thought. Just because Frigidrose was a jerk didn't mean they were! The silver tabby let out a low sigh as she glanced around the camp. The two siblings had been so idle lately with nothing to do besides patrols. Their training was finished, all they were waiting on was their warrior ceremony. Whenever Breezepaw thought of the sure-to-come ceremony, her paws tingled with excitement. But when would it come? Surely Emberstar wouldn't make them wait too much longer? "Hey, are you two ready for your assessment?" Cloudtalon meowed excitedly as he trotted up to them. Breezepaw's expression brightened. "Assessment?" "Yeah, Emberstar wants to go hunting with you two, Honeydapple, and myself to see how you're doing," her mentor purred. "Come on! You'll both do great." The silver she-cat turned to her brother with a thrilled gleam in her eye before they bounded off after the warrior to where Emberstar and Honeydapple were standing at the camp entrance. The leader gave a small smile and meowed, "Let's go."

Russetpaw and Ivypaw were giggling amongst themselves as they carefully crept out of the camp. Now that Russetpaw was out of the nursery, Snowstep wasn't watching her all the time and she was free to sneak off with her friend. She had been waiting for this day since she first spoke to Ivypaw. They would have so much fun! They would get to hunt by themselves, go spy on the bordering Clans - oh, what fun it would be. With Crowstorm pretty much taking the day off to spend time with his new mate, Russetpaw was free from training. However, Ivypaw thought that Foxpounce had mentioned the day before that they would be training today, but the younger apprentice managed to convince her to forget about that for a little while so they could go explore the territory. "You have to show me all your favorite places in the territory! she chirped. "And then we'll go to the border - any border, really! - so we can pretend to be big, scary warriors defending our territory from those rascals!" Ivypaw could only giggle at Russetpaw's imaginings and play along. "They shall forever tremble at the mention of Ivypaw and Russetpaw," she declared. "No! Russetstar and her beloved deputy Ivyfoot!" the younger meowed quickly, making up her friend's warrior name on the spot. "Hmm, no, 'Ivyfoot' doesn't sound so cool...." she mewed, racking her brain in search of a better name. "Ooh! We could both be the leaders! Russetstar and Ivystar!" They both laughed at this and hurriedly continued on their 'patrol'. Suddenly a sound caught Ivypaw's attention. Russetpaw immediately noticed this, asking quite loudly, "What is it?" and was quickly shushed by the older apprentice. Was it the patrol that had been sent out not too long before they ventured out of the camp? The two stood perfectly still for a few moments, careful not to make any sound - Russetpaw even held her breath, which soon resulted in obnoxious gasping after only a couple seconds. "Russetpaw! I told you to keep quiet!" "Sorry! I -" "Russetpaw?" The apprentices froze at Snowstep's voice. "Russetpaw, what in StarClan's name are you doing out here? Ivypaw too? Get over here!" Allowing herself a few muffled grumbles of complaint, the ginger tabby began to pad slowly toward her mother with the tortoiseshell tabby not far behind. It was the patrol, Russetpaw realized. Wait, was that Dewpaw there too? "What's Dewpaw doing out? If you meet a different Clan's patrol, they're bound to think we're weird because of his messed up eyes," she blurted carelessly. Her brother's ears flattened back and he stared at his paws. "Russetpaw, we've talked about this -" Snowstep began firmly, but was interrupted. "You should have just left him back at the camp. No one wants to see him, he's weird." Ivypaw could tell the situation was going to take a turn for the worst, and so she quickly spoke up, "I-I think we should get going." She said to Snowstep, "I'll make sure she gets back to camp okay." Dewpaw could feel his throat tightening as they left, tears threatening to spill. He wouldn't let them, though, not one bit. No one could see how he would cry like a kit - he was too proud. And so he swallowed his frustration, but it was soon to boil over.

"Good morning, Dewpaw."
The white tom started, his head jerking up and his eyes widening a little, but he relaxed when he found that it was only Frigidrose. "Good morning," he mumbled. "How does some training sound? I know it's a bit early, but it wouldn't hurt." Dewpaw grumbled something inaudible as he curled up into a tight ball again, taking a quick moment to savor the warmth of his nest before suddenly jumping to his paws. "Alright, let's go." His mentor smiled and turned away from the den. The young tom scampered out after her, and the two quietly hurried out of the camp, careful not to wake the rest of the Clan. As soon as they had left the shelter of the camp, Dewpaw's teeth began to chatter with the cold. "You'll be alright," Frigidrose assured him. "A good warrior should be able to focus on their task at hand and block out everything that would distract them. This will be good for you." This statement of hers brought a question to Dewpaw's mind. "What if one was injured very badly and they could hardly think because of the pain?" Frigidrose smiled and rested her tail on his back before purring, "Ah, what a great question. Even the greatest pain should be ignored. Anything that stands in your way should be ignored or destroyed." The apprentice tilted his head to the side a bit, mewing quietly, "Destroyed? What do you mean? You can't destroy pain - or this freezing leaf-bare." The she-cat didn't respond for a moment and seemed to be contemplating whether to share with him what was on her mind or not. At last, after a nudge from her apprentice, she meowed calmly, "No, pain and leaf-bare cannot be destroyed, but... some things can be." Dewpaw let out a noisy sigh. Why was she being so cryptic? Every answer she gave seemed to evoke yet another question from him. "What things?" he mewed a bit irritably. The only answer he received this time was a smile - not a grin, not a happy smile, something he hadn't quite seen before.... It was as if she knew something he didn't. Something that should only be told to those worthy of it, he thought. Why wasn't he worthy? He was her apprentice and they had grown closer and closer through all of the times she had comforted him when he was teased by his sister. He thought they could share everything with each other. She was like his mother - she understood him when even his own mother didn't. What had he done wrong? "How can I get you to tell me?" he blurted suddenly. Frigidrose gave him a sidelong glance and smiled that certain smile again. "Oh, I don't know," she purred. "Perhaps..." she trailed off before stopping in her tracks to look him in the eye, directly, intently. He held her gaze, preparing to listen for every little detail. "I know. You master every skill I teach you. Every skill, whether it is considered normal training or not. You will not question me either. You will do exactly as I tell you," she spoke, her eyes gleaming with carefully contained excitement. It almost scared Dewpaw. "Do we have a deal?" Dewpaw hesitated for a brief moment. The gleam in her eye and her being so vague again were frightening him slightly, but he needed to know what she hadn't wanted to tell him. He needed to be worthy of it - the idea that he wasn't already angered him. He didn't give much thought to the idea of this extra, unusual training when perhaps he should have. He made his decision quickly and unthinkingly.
"Of course."

The Clan was up and moving by the time Frigidrose and Dewpaw returned from their training session. That is, all except Falconpaw. The older apprentice was dozing in the den and had to be woken by his siblings. "Falconpaw, get up, lazy-bones!" Heatherpaw called as she came bounding toward the den. Her brother only curled into a tighter ball and let out a heavy sigh. "Come on, get up already," Pinepaw meowed irritably, giving him a hard prod in the ribs. "Ow!" Falconpaw cried before swiftly getting to his paws. "I was just trying to sleep." Heatherpaw laughed, "Oh, we know that. Seriously, we're almost warriors - you can't be sleeping in this late!" With a flick of her tail signaling her brothers to follow, she hurried out of the den. Upon noticing the direction in which they were heading, Falconpaw inquired, "Why are we going to the leader's den?" "Mom wanted to talk to us," Heatherpaw replied. Falconpaw thought that was strange. Wouldn't Emberstar just come find them to speak with them? Why was she having them come to her den? Was something wrong? He began to worry and increased his pace to a trot. "Mom? What is it?" he meowed as he entered the den. He stopped at the sight of his and his siblings' mentors sitting before the leader. Suddenly he realized what was happening and struggled to contain his excitement. Heatherpaw didn't care if her happiness showed and so she let out a squeal of delight when their mother beckoned them inside. "Good morning," Emberstar meowed with a smile. "You all slept well?" The three nodded quickly, eager for her to get to the point of this meeting. "Wonderful," she purred. She allowed a pause before jumping to the subject she wished to discuss, "I believe from what I've heard from your mentors that you three are ready to be warriors." She gave each of them a long, meaningful look. Each apprentice's heart was pounding at having heard those words. Finally! - they were going to be warriors! Emberstar turned to the mentors. "You believe they are ready?" Frostpath, Birchwing, and Stormbreeze each nodded, glancing at their apprentices with a spark of excitement in their eyes but also one of sorrow, for the long, often enjoyable hours of training had at last come to an end. "Alright. Falconpaw, Pinepaw, and Heatherpaw, please join me for a patrol," Emberstar meowed. She was unable to keep the wide grin from making it onto her face at the idea of her kits becoming warriors.

"Good morning, Daisyskip!" Crowstorm meowed happily after dropping a plump mouse at his mate's paws. "Good morning," the young queen purred, nuzzling him. "How are you feeling?" he questioned. Every day he was growing even more worried since their kits would be coming soon. He worried for Daisyskip because even though she always said she would be fine, he knew she was scared. "I'm feeling fine, thanks," she mewed. "Willowcloud said it would be any day now..." she admitted, her voice dropping in volume. Crowstorm licked her forehead. "You'll be fine. Willowcloud and Appleheart will take good care of you," he tried to assure her, forcing a big smile onto his face. Daisyskip nodded slowly. "I can't wait to see them," she murmured as her gaze turned to her swollen belly. Just then, Appleheart entered the nursery, carrying a few herbs tucked under his chin. Putting them down near the queen, he mewed, "Hi, Daisyskip. Any pains?" The cream tabby hesitated before shrugging just the slightest. Appleheart sighed, "Alright. Willowcloud thinks you'll be delivering within a couple days, so we're just going to be keeping an eye on you." "O-okay." Daisyskip nodded, turning to Crowstorm with a weak smile, which he returned. "You'll be alright, don't worry. I need to go train Russetpaw, I'll see you later."

The six apprentices hurried out of the camp, eager to get on with their next training session, and were followed by their mentors. Russetpaw and Ivypaw led the way, chattering like blue-jays during the entire walk to the training area; Otterpaw and Fernpaw were close behind, their gazes up toward the trees as they searched for any sign of the birds' return after the leaf-bare; and Dewpaw and Brightpaw brought up the rear. The odd-eyed tom kept his eyes toward the ground and his lips in a permanent frown while his sister unsuccessfully tried to talk to him and cheer him up. She had noticed how he was growing farther apart from his siblings by the day and she worried about him. His eyes didn't bother her like they did Russetpaw.
Soon they all reached the clearing and began their training. However, Frigidrose and Dewpaw didn't seem to be very enthusiastic about it. Brightpaw couldn't help but wonder why. It was an important skill they were learning! She didn't know that they would rather be doing their extra training. Finally she decided to ask her brother what the problem was. "Dewpaw?" she mewed quietly when Dustfall had turned away for a moment to help out with another apprentice. The young white tom had been gazing off into the distance, obviously thinking himself away from the clearing, and jerked his head toward his sister with wide eyes before quickly calming down. "U-um," Brightpaw stuttered, a bit frightened by his movements. "Dewpaw, are you alright? You don't seem like -" "He's fine," Frigidrose cut in. Quickly Brightpaw turned away and resumed her own training. Frigidrose scared her - she always had. The young apprentice didn't know why a chill went down her spine every time she caught sight of the warrior. She was worried for Dewpaw because of his mentor, but wouldn't dare say anything about it. Maybe she should just leave him alone? But he was her brother.... She didn't know what to do.

It was about sun-high when the apprentices and their mentors returned from the training session. Frigidrose was heading for the fresh-kill pile, but Emberstar quickly padded up to her with a smile, saying, "Hey, Frigidrose, I was just wondering... we're friends now, but our kits aren't, so I was considering having a little talk with them to explain things?" The warrior briefly sputtered for an answer before getting out, "S-sure! That - that would be great!" "Wonderful! I'll go find them. Meet me in my den." Frigidrose stood there nearly speechless while the leader bounded off toward the warriors' den. Friends? At first, she was utterly disgusted with this, but slowly she began to smile. Emberstar believed they were friends. Ah, how smoothly her plans would go now. Emberstar trusted her, and now she only had to wait until Dewpaw's training was complete.... She hurried into the leaders' den and a few seconds later was followed by her kits. "Mom? What's going on?" Breezeclaw whispered into her ear. "Hang on just a moment, sweetie. Dear Emberstar will explain," she purred. Her daughter stared at her with obvious confusion and was about to question further, but Cinderdawn intervened, "Seriously, calm down, Breezeclaw." The she-cat gave a small huff before sitting quietly as they waited for Emberstar's kits. When they arrived, one of them - Pinedust, she thought it was - caught her eye, but she quickly looked away. She wouldn't dare talk to them with her mother around. "Hi, everyone," Emberstar purred. "I'm sure you all know that Frigidrose here and I were... at odds for a while because of what happened to Shadekit. Well, we've gotten over it. This is probably very surprising, but it is the truth." Frigidrose could just barely restrain herself from smirking at that. The leader went on, "And so we would appreciate it if you all got along, too. I know before you were probably scared to be around the others, but you're completely free to talk to one another now. That's all." All of the kits - except Heatherpond, that is - uncertainly looked around at each other. This is a joke, right? they were thinking. All of a sudden, their mothers were getting along? Most of them were still quite suspicious of this, but Heatherpond was nearly squealing with delight. "Oh, this is wonderful!" she cried, which earned her glares from her brothers. They sat there quite awkwardly in silence before Falconchaser abruptly decided to let himself out of the den and was immediately followed by the others. Emberstar sighed, "I'm not sure it went all that well...." "Oh, it was fine, Ember. They'll understand," Frigidrose purred. The leader gave a small smile before excusing herself to speak to Ashenclaw about patrols or something of the such. Frigidrose may have been calm on the outside, but inwardly she was fuming. She didn't want Breezeclaw and Cinderdawn to have anything to do with Emberstar's kits, and now look what happened. She grumbled to herself as she slunk into the warriors' den. Well, she'd have to find some way to turn this to her advantage, she figured. Cinderdawn didn't seem the sort to socialize much, but Breezeclaw had already been spending a bit of time with Heatherpond. Frigidrose pondered what she could do about this, but couldn't think of anything. Sighing heavily with frustration, she wondered if a short nap could help her.

Breezeclaw turned her ears back with irritation as she stepped out of the warriors' den and straight into a puddle. She quickly hopped out of it and shook her paws, flinging droplets of water everywhere. Remembering now how much she had hated last new-leaf for its flooding, the young warrior knew that this morning certainly wasn't off to a grand start. She spotted Ashenclaw with a few warriors, probably deciding who should be sent out on patrol or whether the apprentices should be out training today with all this rain, and hoped that she wouldn't be assigned to a patrol. It was bad enough sitting around the soggy camp, and she'd rather not go out trudging through the soaking earth. Much to her relief, her name wasn't called, and she headed toward the fresh-kill pile after hearing her stomach rumble a bit. There was already someone else there - she didn't bother to try to recognize them - and while she would usually stray away from others, she decided she would just grab something quickly. Hopefully she wouldn't have to converse with them. The silver tabby began to pick through the pile, pushing aside pieces of prey that seemed old, looking for any fresh and still somewhat warm ones. At last she found what she was looking for - a small mouse that appeared recently brought in - and went to drag it toward her with her paw when the other cat did the same. Breezeclaw involuntarily jerked her paw back, staring at the ground, and mumbled, "Y-you can have it. I don't need it, I'll find something else." The other quickly objected, "No, you take it. I think you were reaching for it first." It was Pinedust. Breezeclaw's ears turned back for a brief moment as she recognized his voice. She didn't want to talk to him. Although Emberstar had that incredibly awkward talk with all of them a moon ago and seemed pretty open to being friendly toward Frigidrose, Breezeclaw had noticed her mother wearing that fake smile of hers. Clearly she didn't have the same mindset as Emberstar. Breezeclaw didn't want to anger her mother by talking to Pinedust, so she gave a small nod of thanks and swiftly brought the mouse near her and picked it up in her maw. She was turning to trot away to a corner of the camp when Pinedust spoke again, "Are you okay? - I mean, uh...." he trailed off, obviously uncertain about speaking to her as well. "Fine," she muttered and began to walk off again. "You just seem kinda, um... I don't know - upset? Is everything alright?" Breezeclaw let out a heavy sigh as she dropped the mouse and turned to the tom. "I said I'm fine. Okay?" She didn't mean to snap and felt a twinge of regret as the words left her lips. She didn't utter an apology, however, and quickly picked up the fresh-kill and hurried off.

"We really can't go train, Crowstorm?" Russetpaw whined, following her mentor around the camp like a puppy would its two-leg. The warrior grumbled, "Yes, Russetpaw. I've told you twice already. Water's everywhere, and it's probably going to flood soon, so it isn't a good idea to be out training." "But wouldn't it be good to know how to fight in the rain - or something else in the rain?" Crowstorm sighed with exasperation. "I told you no, okay? Go play with Ivypaw and your siblings, or help the medicine cats, or something...." As he trotted away from her, Russetpaw finally had the sense to not trail behind him this time. She looked around the camp for the other apprentices. Much to her surprise, she couldn't find them anywhere. Could they seriously have not woken up yet? The ginger tabby bounded across the camp and into the apprentices' den. Her suspicions were confirmed; they were all still curled up in their nests. "Wake up, guys!" she meowed quite loudly. "Russetpaw..." Ivypaw groaned, holding her paws over her ears and scrunching her eyes shut. "Come on, I can't believe you're all still sleeping!" "There won't be any training today," Otterpaw explained, "so we get to sleep in." Russetpaw gave an exaggerated sigh and began to prod the others to their paws. "Ow! Would you stop that?" "Russetpaw!" While the other apprentices grew flustered and grumbled complaints, Russetpaw only giggled. When everyone but Dewpaw had been pushed out of their nests, she turned and led them out of the den toward the nursery. "Let's go meet Daisyskip's kit!" she mewed. "Uh..." Otterpaw was a bit uncertain about this. "I don't think Daisyskip would want a band of rambunctious apprentices storming into the nursery to overwhelm her newborn kit." "Oh, it will be fine, Otterpaw," the ginger she-cat said. "Wait..." Brightpaw mewed, glancing around them, "where's Dewpaw?" She seemed to be the only one who had noticed his absence. "Dewpaw's no fun. If anyone should be kept from entering that nursery, it's him. He'd probably scare the little kit to death," Russetpaw stated calmly and continued padding to the nursery. Brightpaw's ears turned back a little. "Russetpaw, he's our brother. What's your problem?" The other scoffed, "Oh, he's the one with the problem. Have you not noticed his eyes after these nine moons, Brightpaw?" "I know he has odd eyes. The color of his eyes doesn't mean he's a bad cat. I don't understand why you taunt and shun him all the time." Russetpaw, apparently at a loss for words, only sent a glare her way before stepping into the nursery.

"Frostpath, Foxpounce, Breezeclaw, Mistystep, and Ivypaw," Ashenclaw called out, "I'd like for you all to join me on a patrol."
Mistystep's breath caught in her throat. A patrol? she thought. W-what about dogs a-and badgers - or maybe f-foxes? - Oh shut up, Misty! He's already assigned you to the patrol so there's really nothing you can do about it now. Just try to act confident. Don't let them see how terrified you are. The newest warrior of LeafClan had been a resident for a moon now but was still nervous around her new Clan-mates. She was always afraid that they were judging her - she was a former kittypet, after all. It didn't help that she was only able to join one patrol, as she was missing one crucial thing to Clan cats that everyone else had. Her claws were gone. All of them, front and back. The first time her two-leg left her alone for a while, Mistystep's separation anxiety kicked in, resulting in the carpet being shredded, furniture half-ruined, and several other things destroyed. Thank StarClan her two-leg didn't have the heart to put her to sleep or throw her out, but instead they had her claws removed. Whenever Mistystep recalled this, she either lowered her head in embarrassment or fought tears back. "Um, Mistystep?" The dilute calico quickly snapped out of her thoughts to see that it was Foxpounce who had spoken to her. Everyone in the patrol was gathered around, looking at her expectantly. "I-I, sorry, I..." she stuttered and trailed off, staring at her paws. Foxpounce only chuckled, "Well, let's not keep everyone waiting, okay? Come on." Reluctantly, Mistystep padded after the patrol.

"Thank StarClan green-leaf is nearly over!" mewed Briardusk. "It's really stressful with all the dogs and two-legs around, and the heat is awful! I don't know how all our thick-furred Clan-mates are managing." Everyone else in the hunting patrol nodded their heads in agreement. "I can't wait for leaf-fall to arrive. I love how the leaves change colors. It's really beautiful," Cloudtalon added. "Yes!" Briardusk chirped. "Leaf-fall is the best! It's my favorite -" "Hey, sorry to interrupt," Webfang cut in, "But all your chitter-chatter is sure to scare away all the prey. We should focus on hunting." Briardusk hung her head a little, mumbling a soft "sorry" before turning her attention to the task at hand. She sniffed the air and kept her ears alert but could sense nothing, which was strange seeing as Falconchaser and Pinedust were already teaming up to catch something and Cinderdawn and Webfang seemed to be intently watching something as well. She sighed a bit. Hmm, I guess I'll just have to try harder. Soon enough half the patrol had their catches in their jaws and were preparing to head back to camp. Briardusk hadn't a clue why she was unable to find anything - she usually returned with a kill every time she was sent hunting! She was noticeably disappointed, and she asked Webfang if perhaps she could stay out a little longer. "Briardusk, there's dogs and such out. I'm sorry, I don't think it would be a good idea for you to be by yourself," said the older warrior. The she-cat's heart sank. Cloudtalon spoke up, "I can stay with her if that's alright." Webfang nodded. "Alright then." With a flick of his tail, he set off with the remainder of the patrol in the direction of the camp. "Thanks, Cloudtalon. I appreciate it," Briardusk mewed. The tom gave a warm smile. "Not a problem, sweetheart." Briardusk ducked her head in embarrassment, quickly stepping away to get a sniff of the air. It was obvious Cloudtalon liked her - it had been for several moons. The she-cat had simply ignored it, pretended either she didn't know or he didn't like her. Suddenly she heard the soft flapping of wings overhead and turned her gaze upward to find a sparrow diving out of the sky into a tree. As soon as she began to stalk it, it took off. The warrior let out a low grumble, kicking at the dry dirt with her paws in frustration. What was wrong with her today? We couldn't she catch anything? "Hey, it's alright," Cloudtalon mewed soothingly, stepping forward and resting his tail across her back. "It was just a sparrow, just a silly little sparrow." Briardusk sighed loudly, "It's just frustrating, I don't know why I can't catch anything today!" She stared at her paws, a frown slowly spreading across her face. Even though this was just one little instance in which her hunting skills were not up to par, she felt useless. She hated not being able to provide for her Clan, give back to it. "Aw, Briar, it's not a big deal. Really. You're just fine, don't beat yourself up about it." For once, Briardusk was quiet. She just didn't know what to say. She could only think of how strange it was that she was unable to catch something for her Clan and how she needed to try harder. Try harder, harder, harder. She was about to pad away from Cloudtalon in search of prey when he spoke again, "So, uh... since you're feeling a bit down, I kinda want to ask you something - maybe it would cheer you up...." Briardusk titled her head to the side a bit. "Okay, what?" "Well..." he paused, trying to formulate his thoughts. "You're - you're such a beautiful, sweet she-cat, and honestly I've really liked you for a while, so I wanted to ask if you would be my mate?" It all came out quickly, in a swift stream of words. Briardusk stood speechless for a moment while Cloudtalon stared expectantly. She hadn't been expecting that.... She had just recently gotten over Bumbletuft - she hadn't seen him for several moons and decided it would just be for the best if she gave up. It was heartbreaking, and she had been a little depressed for a while. She just didn't think Cloudtalon would ask her, she didn't see it coming at all. She had no idea what to say to him. She hated upsetting others and couldn't bear to tell him no, but.... Perhaps she would just see how it goes. Maybe she would grow to love him - he was a kind, gentlemanly tom, and handsome, after all. Before she knew it, she sputtered out, "Y-yes."

"Hey Breezeclaw!" Heatherpond called, trotting toward her friend, who was grooming herself in a corner of the camp. "I asked Ashenclaw if we and our siblings could go out hunting, and he said we could! I just feel like we're all still divided or something, and it's bothering me. A Clan is supposed to be a group of close, tight-knit cats, after all!" Breezeclaw could only stare at her for a moment before shaking her head miserably. "Heather, really?" she grumbled. "It's not that important." "Yes, it is!" The silver tabby sighed, "No, really." She hated the idea of going on any sort of patrol with Pinedust. He kept asking her if she was alright even after she already told him she was fine. But you look so upset. What's the probem? he would go on. You, she wanted to say, but she held her tongue. Why in StarClan's name couldn't he just leave her alone? "Oh, come on, Breezeclaw," Heatherpond mewed, interrupting her thoughts. "It won't be as bad as you think it will. Just one hunting patrol. I'll go find my brothers, can you get yours?" She was answered with a barely audible grumble, "Fine." While Heatherpond bounced off to search for her brothers, Breezeclaw slunk toward the warriors' den. What would her mother say about this? "Cinderdawn, wake up," she meowed flatly and prodded him in the ribs. "Ow! Breezeclaw!" the darker tabby yelped, jumping to his paws and shaking his fur out. "What do you want?" "We've been assigned to the dawn hunting patrol." "With who?" Breezeclaw's ears swiveled back and nearly flattened against her skull. That was the very question she was hoping he wouldn't ask, seeing as her mother was now awake as well and listening. She paused before mumbling, "Heatherpond, Falconchaser, and Pinedust." Frigidrose hurried to her paws and padded quickly over to her kits, a disgusted expression plastered onto her face. "What?" she nearly hissed. "What was that?" Breezeclaw repeated herself, and Frigidrose scowled. "Now why would Ashenclaw assign just the lot of you to a hunting patrol, hm?" "Heatherpond asked him if -" She was interrupted by a hiss from her mother, "Oh, of course she did, the mouse-brained fool. Well. Something bad is certainly bound to happen. It would be best if I accompanied you." With a flick of her tail, Frigidrose trotted out of the den. Cinderdawn sighed and mewed quietly, "Oh well.... Let's hope for the best." He began to pad toward the den's exit, and Breezeclaw followed. With Frigidrose on the patrol now, she wouldn't even feel comfortable talking to Heatherpond. The potential fun - if there was any to begin with - was being mercilessly drained out of this patrol. When the siblings reached the camp entrance where the rest of the patrol had gathered, the confusion and disappointment of Frigidrose joining was clear on Heatherpond's face. Noticing Breezeclaw approaching, she gave a weak smile to her friend and then the rest of the patrol. "Okay, I guess we'll head out now." The group was silent as they stepped out of the camp. The quiet was almost painful, and when Heatherpond tried to start up a small, awkward conversation, it was even more so. A few monster-lengths away from the camp, they began to split up to search for prey. Frigidrose and Cinderdawn were the first to stray from the group, teaming up to catch a bird, and shortly Heatherpond and Falconchaser followed suit, stalking a plump mouse, leaving Breezeclaw and Pinedust standing there awkwardly, avoiding each other's gazes. Of course, just had to be him, the silver she-cat thought grumpily. Thanks, Heatherpond, for leaving me alone with your creepy brother. Real friendship at work there. "Do you smell that?" Pinedust mewed quietly. "Probably just some prey, mouse-brain," Breezeclaw muttered, not bothering to give the air a good sniff to identify whatever it was and instead padding off to hunt on her own. "No, it's... different. I don't know what..." A piercing yowl interrupted him, "Badger! Get back to camp! Now!!" Breezeclaw felt an icy chill slither down her spine at Cinderdawn's words. She felt like she couldn't move. Where was her brother? Was the badger after him? While Falconchaser and Heatherpond did as Cinderdawn had said and fled toward the camp to gather a larger patrol that could take on the badger and drive it out of the territory, Breezeclaw ran in the direction the yowl had sounded and was followed by Pinedust. "Cinderdawn!" she cried as she tore her way through the undergrowth, low branches smacking her face. She ignored the stinging and continued her dash. "Breezeclaw, get to camp!" Cinderdawn howled. "I'm not leaving without you!" A low growling soon caught her attention and she darted in that direction, quickly coming to a small clearing where a large badger had her brother cornered. His gaze flitted around, searching for a way to escape, and suddenly he leapt backwards and clung to the side of a tree. He was about to scramble up, but his claws had dug into the bark so deep that he was having trouble retracting them. Breezeclaw charged forward as the badger moved to strike at him, but she wasn't fast enough. The creature tore Cinderdawn from the tree, yanking a couple of his claws out and sending him flying for a second before hitting the ground with a thud and skidding a fox-length. Breezeclaw stared at her brother, praying to StarClan that he would get to his paws. When he didn't move, she ran toward him and crouched at his side. His eyes were barely open, he was trying to get up but was struggling greatly. Pinedust and Frigidrose were fending off the badger which gave Breezeclaw the time to nudge her brother to his paws and get him walking, though with a great amount of support from her. "Let's go!" she called back to the others. "You get him back to camp," Pinedust hollered. "We'll wait for Falcon and Heather to return with reinforcements. You need to go!" Breezeclaw reluctantly followed his orders and tried to urge her brother on. Soon a patrol flew past them with Falconchaser and Heatherpond at the lead, and the group was followed by the two medicine cats, who hurried toward Breezeclaw and Cinderdawn. Appleheart assisted the silver tabby in helping the wounded tom to the medicine den. Cinderdawn collapsed onto a moss bed and Appleheart carefully tended to him. Willowcloud brought Breezeclaw some poppy seeds, but she hardly felt like eating anything. With some urging from the fluffy, gray medicine cat, she eventually swallowed the tiny seeds. She would not stop staring at her injured brother. His breathing seemed to be failing. This can't be happening - i-it just c-cant.... Cinderdawn... please. You can pull through. I know you can.

Appleheart sat alone a couple fox-lengths outside the camp entrance, staring at the ground. He felt dizzy and yet he felt like everything was just still - at the same time. What kind of medicine cat was he? What use was he to the Clan if he couldn't save the life of an injured warrior? He tried to keep reminding himself that Cinderdawn's wounds were far too many and far too deep. There was nothing he could have done, even with help from Willowcloud. They had no cobwebs in their medicine store. What was he supposed to do? "Appleheart?" Wilowcloud mewed softly from the camp entrance. The ginger tom didn't turn his gaze toward her. Willowcloud frowned and padded up to him. The poor cat's shoulders were hunched and his eyes held a dull, depressed look. The gray she-cat gently wrapped her tail around him. "It's not your fault, Appleheart -" "Leave me alone." Willowcloud flinched a little when he snapped at her. She knew he didn't mean it, but decided it would be best to respect his wishes. When she left, Appleheart could just barely hold in the jumble of emotions that were begging to get out one way or another - in a scream, sob, something. Brindlecloud should be kitting any day now, he knew. He was worried sick. What if something happened to her? Or the kits? Would he ever get to see his kits? The tom quickly shut out the thought and trudged back into the camp. They had buried Cinderdawn, but Breezeclaw still lay where his body had been in the middle of camp earlier for them to say their farewells. Frigidrose refused to speak to anyone and had curled up in her nest in the warriors' den, hissing and spitting at anyone who came near. Poor Heatherpond was still in a state of shock. She was miserable - it had been her idea for them to go out on the hunting patrol. Appleheart saw all of this but hardly took it in. He headed straight for his moss bed, settling down on it, curling his fluffy tail over his eyes, and wishing all of this to be just a bad dream.

Breezeclaw was startled awake by a voice mewing her name. It was Ashenclaw, poking his head into the warriors' den with a slight concerned expression. "Hey, think you'd be up for a patrol today? It might make you feel better." The young warrior opened her mouth to snap some sort of negative answer, but quickly thought better of it. Maybe it would do her some good, it wasn't healthy for her to stay in the den all the time. A bit reluctantly, she gave a small nod and got to her paws, following the deputy out to the camp entrance. "Hi," she heard Pinedust mew a little uncertainly. "Hi," she meowed flatly. To Breezeclaw's relief, he didn't utter another word. Suddenly she felt a pang of sorrow when she realized she was glad when he stopped speaking to her. It was weird, to say the least - in that one little moment, she saw how she was only making herself even more miserable. All these moons, she had pushed others away and yet had no idea how she didn't have any friends. Apparently her mind just didn't connect the dots. She just wanted someone to talk to, someone to always be there for her. She had done it all to herself. No one was ever there for her. She was alone, so alone.... Breezeclaw began to panic when she realized that her throat was tightening and her eyes watering. "I - I can't... do th-this right... now," she sputtered to Pinedust, trying to keep her voice down. "T-tell Ashenc - I c-c-can - can't." The silver tabby then darted toward the warriors' den, collapsing onto her nest and sobbing into the moss. She couldn't believe it. She just couldn't. Now her brother was gone - the only cat she'd ever been somewhat close to. He was gone.

Crowstorm looked around at the other members of the patrol, searching for any sign to explain why they weren't heading out yet. He noticed Pinedust speaking to Ashenclaw and heard something about Breezeclaw, but all of this was interrupted when Appleheart trotted quickly into the camp, holding a kit by their scruff. He gently but hurriedly put them down in front of his paws and called out, "Daisyskip? Crowstorm?" "I'm here!" the black tom meowed, rushing toward the medicine cat. "Who's this? What happened?" "I... I found her when I was out herb hunting. She's so cold, we need to get her to Daisyskip." Appleheart picked up the squealing kit again, and Crowstorm followed him into the nursery. Willowcloud was in there, checking on Daisyskip and her kits. When she noticed the tiny ginger tabby, Daisyskip gasped, "Oh StarClan, where did you find the poor thing? They must be so cold! Do you think they'll be alright?" Appleheart placed the squirming kit near the queen's belly. "I stumbled upon her when I was out herb hunting. I think she'll be fine." The medicine cat's voice was somewhat tight and flat, the voice one used when they were trying not to show emotion. Crowstorm wasn't going to question Appleheart, but thought he could tell that he was hiding something. "Oh, it's a she-kit!" Daisyskip mewed happily. "What should we name her? Appleheart, since you found her, would you like to give her a name?" Appleheart shifted his paws a little nervously. "U-um, sure - yes. I'd thought of Tawny.... What do you think?" The cream tabby purred, "I like that! It fits her. She's so cute..." "Well, it looks like all is good here," Willowcloud meowed, turning toward the nursery exit. "Appleheart, would you mind sorting herbs with me?" The ginger tom shook his head, and the two of them padded out of the nursery, Appleheart turning his head at the last moment to get a look at Tawnykit again. Once in the medicine den, Willowcloud pointed with her nose toward the pile that needed sorting. They worked in silence for quite a while. Willowcloud's mind was very busy, however. She was certain that something was up with her apprentice and she wanted to bring it up but wasn't sure how to word it so that it didn't seem like an attack. The fluffy gray she-cat let out a sigh, which attracted Appleheart's attention. He looked up at her, mewing a "Hm?" Willowcloud hesitated a moment before saying quietly, "That kit - Tawnykit.... She looks an awful lot like you, you know." Appleheart stopped his sorting and stared at his mentor. Giving him a quick glance before continuing the work, she sighed again, "I've known for a while, Appleheart - well, I suspected it. You're very close to that EchoClan medicine cat -" "You won't tell, will you?" The tom's shaky voice was hardly above a whisper. Another sigh from his mentor, "Of course not. I'm just... sad." She stopped sorting completely and looked Appleheart in the eye intently. "Sad for you. You hardly ever get to see your mate. And if you have other kits in her Clan, you hardly get to see them as well." "I know, I know..." Appleheart mumbled with annoyance, shifting his paws uncomfortably. "I... I'll go look for herbs.... Bye." As her apprentice trotted swiftly out of the den, Willowcloud gazed after him, sorrow and disappointment clear in her eyes.

"Dewpaw," Frigidrose purred as she quickly padded toward him, a broad smile on her face. "I asked Ashenclaw if he could put us on the hunting patrol so everyone could see how your training has progressed and if you're ready for your ceremony. Most everyone is working on patching up the dens so the flooding doesn't reach many of them, especially the nursery, so it's going to be a small patrol. And guess who's coming...." she trailed off with a slight giggle, staring at him expectantly. Dewpaw narrowed his eyes a little in puzzlement. It was weird how happy she looked while she told him this. "Uh..." "Your mother." A slight chill ran down the white tom's spine. So that's what she was talking about.... "You remember what we rehearsed, right? You know the plan?" Dewpaw nodded, his flat expression revealing none of his inner turmoil. "Great! Oh, and it gets better. Webfang's coming, too. StarClan, luck is on our side!" Frigidrose whispered. Her expression was very similar to one of an excited kit when they get to leave the nursery for the first time. The apprentice gulped, his face remaining emotionless while his stomach began to churn as the realization came to him. Their plan was being put into action - today, now. It was frightening. "They should be here any moment - oh, yes, there you are!" Frigidrose called to the two approaching warriors. Snowstep was beaming with pride as she gazed at her son. "Oh StarClan, I can't believe it! You've grown up so fast.... How are you feeling, dear?" Dewpaw shrugged and stared at the ground, gnawing on the inside of his cheek. "Ah, nervous, I see. You'll be just fine, don't worry," she purred as she stepped forward to lick the top of his head. For once he didn't pull away in disgust. Noticing this, Snowstep tilted her head to the side a little. "Is something wrong?" Dewpaw shuffled his paws uncertainly, keeping his gaze toward the ground in front of his paws. His voice came out in a tiny whisper as he raised his head to look her in the eye for just a moment, "Mom..." It sounded like a whimper. Out of the corner of his eye, he found Frigidrose shooting him a cold, hard stare. Quickly, he lowered his gaze, stuttering quietly, "N-nev-v-ver mi-mind." "Alright," Frigidrose meowed quite loudly, "Let's get going, shall we?"

-----------------------------------------------

"We should try another way. There isn't going to be any prey near this rushing water," Webfang suggested. Frigidrose shook her head. "Oh no, this is perfect. They will all be trying to get a little drink and will be too focused on not falling in, so it would be easier to catch them this way." The dark tabby warrior narrowed his eyes. "I've never heard of that. It's too risky. One of us might fall in if we aren't careful." "It will be fine," Dewpaw spoke up. "We're all skilled hunters. We won't fall in." Webfang sighed and shook his head a little, "Alright, if you say so." Frigidrose motioned to him with her tail and mewed, "Webfang, why don't we try a little farther up the river while Dewpaw and Snowstep stay here?" Webfang agreed and followed her about four monster-lengths away from the other two. "Do you see anything? Smell anything?" Snowstep asked her son. He shook his head. "Not yet. Let's get closer to the water and have a look around." "Be careful, okay?" Dewpaw nodded as he began to step toward the swollen river. It was quite a sight, and the roar of it was almost deafening. He came to a halt just a few mouse-lengths away from it, shaking the droplets of water from the spray out of his pelt. When Snowstep came up beside him, he threw Frigidrose a glance, asking if the time was right. She held up her tail, signaling to wait a bit. "It's so beautiful, isn't it?" Snowstep mewed, watching the foamy water rush past them. "And yet it's so deadly." Dewpaw remained silent, going over his training sessions in his head, preparing for what he was about to do. "I'm so glad I got to come with you on your assessment. You're going to be such an amazing warrior. I'm proud to call you my son." The apprentice's breath caught in his throat. He stared at the water with wide eyes. How could he do such a thing? How could he do it to his own mother? He just had to do it - now, before he convinced himself otherwise. Unthinking, fighting tears, he lunged at Snowstep. The force of his body slamming into hers knocked her off balance and tumbling into the river. Dewpaw struggled to regain his own balance and hurry away from the water's edge, running to a nearby tree and collapsing against it. He held his paws tight over his ears to drown out his mother's screams for help. When at last only the rushing of the water could be heard, the young tom fought back the coming sob. His throat tightened and his breaths came in gasps. He would not let himself cry. He had proven his loyalty to Frigidrose, but a sobbing mess afterwards would make her think him weak. Then another splash, farther away, sounded. Dewpaw threw a glance toward the area where Frigidrose and Webfang had been standing. Webfang was gone, and Frigidrose was trotting toward her apprentice. "Good," she meowed. "You have earned my trust, Dewpaw. But next time wait for my signal."

-----------------------------------------------

Ashenclaw's ears flattened against the back of his head as a wail sounded from the leader's den. Frigidrose and Dewpaw had returned, but Webfang and Snowstep hadn't. They had been 'lost to the floods.' But the other two were completely fine. Ashenclaw knew that something was up. Frigidrose, the Clan-mate all the newcomers had once been warned about, the one who was known to cause trouble, and her apprentice had arrived at camp unscathed. If they had been trying to help their Clan-mates out of the river - however impossible some may deem the idea - their pelts would have been soaked and smeared with mud. They would be breathing hard. Instead they looked just the way they had when they left the camp, but most everyone was too grief-stricken to notice. The gray tabby tom padded quickly to Emberstar's den. Frigidrose was sitting next to the leader with her tail wrapped around her. When Ashenclaw entered, her head jerked up in surprise and she gave him a hard stare. The deputy ignored this and sat down on the opposite side of the den. "Emberstar, is there anything I can do for you?" he meowed calmly. He was met with trembling sobs. Frigidrose advised, "It would be best for you to leave. She's still in shock, and having multiple cats around would likely overwhelm her." Ashenclaw nodded but paid no attention to what she said. "Emberstar, might I suggest a possible cause of your mate's death?" Frigidrose glared at him and hissed, "He slipped into the water. There was nothing I could do." Emberstar nodded her agreement. Ashenclaw sighed, pausing a moment to gather his thoughts. "I believe that may not be correct." Finally Emberstar looked up at him. The fur on her face was damp with her tears and her eyes were glossy. "Wh-what do you mean?" she choked out, her voice a hoarse whisper. "Nothing, Emberstar, nothing - don't pay any attention to him," Frigidrose quickly intervened, shooting an icy glare at Ashenclaw. He ignored it and answered the leader, "I apologize for my bluntness, but I believe it may be a murder. Same for Snowstep." Emberstar gasped and Frigidrose leapt to her feet. "GET OUT!" she shrieked. "I cannot leave, I am waiting for my leader's response." "I said -" "Ashenclaw..." Emberstar interrupted. "How... how could you suggest such a thing? Frigidrose would never do that." There was a long, drawn-out silence before the deputy spoke again, "I must insist." Emberstar shook her head slowly, gaze glued to the ground. "No... no! She never would! I can't believe you're saying this!" she hissed. "Emberstar -" "No! No! I don't understand how you could think such of your own Clan-mate! Soon enough you'll be splitting the Clan apart, and my life's work will be destroyed! You - you cannot be my deputy any longer - you can't!" Ashenclaw was taken aback by this. Was she serious? Had Frigidrose really twisted her mind this much? "Yes, that's what I must do. Ashenclaw, you will no longer be my deputy. Frigidrose will take your place." The tom stood there, gaping, while the gray she-cat allowed a broad smile to creep onto her face. "Emberstar, thank you. I would be honored to be your deputy."

------------------------------------------------

"Sootkit, do you have to go sleep in that other den when you're an apprentice? Why can't you stay here?" Lightkit whined as he began to chase his brother's tail. "Because I'll be an apprentice, silly," Sootkit sighed. "Apprentices sleep in the apprentices' den, kits sleep in the nursery." "But can't this be an exception? I don't want you to go until we all can go!" Daisyskip chuckled at Lightkit's complaints, "Don't worry, Lightkit. It won't be so long before you and Tawnykit are apprentices, too. Sootkit might have to wait a little longer anyways..." she trailed off as she thought of Emberstar and what she was going through. "Poor Emberstar probably isn't feeling well enough to do his ceremony." Lightkit gasped, a bright smile instantly replacing the frown he had a moment ago. "Really?! Yay!" "Lightkit! That isn't something to be happy about!" Tawnykit giggled, "Lightkit, you're hilarious!" The giggles were quickly interrupted when Isidora came trotting into the nursery. On her face she wore something that could be described as a sad smile. "I just checked with Frigidrose - she said the ceremonies will begin shortly." Daisyskip narrowed her eyes in puzzlement. Wouldn't that have been Ashenclaw's task? - to speak with the leader about matters such as ceremonies and then deliver the news to the Clan? An ordinary warrior wouldn't be doing that. Why was Frigidrose? However, the queen decided not to question it and began to frantically clean Sootkit's pelt.

"Mom! What happened? Are you okay?!" Heatherpond cried as she ran to her mother, who was returning from a stroll out in the forest. It was the day after the incident, and she had decided to go for a little walk because it would help her to calm down. But it looked as though it had been anything but calming. The leader had clearly been attacked by something. She was struggling to get herself into the camp and she looked utterly exhausted. "Badgers," she breathed. "Four. Not far." Heatherpond, Willowcloud, and Dustfall helped her to the medicine den where she collapsed onto a bed of moss. "She'll sleep for a while," Willowcloud mewed as the three stood there watching their leader, all wishing to do everything they could to help her, but it was in StarClan's paws. "Badgers couldn't have ripped away as many lives as she has left. Hopefully she lost only one, but it could be up to three, I guess." "Is there anything you can do for her?" Heatherpond whimpered. The medicine cat shook her head. "StarClan is taking good care of her, don't worry. She will be healed in no time." "What happened?" All three heads turned at Frigidrose's voice. "She said it was a badger - no, four badgers, sorry. They're near the camp," the young warrior mewed. Frigidrose stiffened, recalling her son's death. "She's alright?" she asked, stepping forward to take a look at the leader. "Just fine. StarClan is healing her." Frigidrose sat back on her haunches, her gaze never leaving Emberstar, and remained silent for a little while before speaking again, "I'm going to get a patrol together. We're going to drive these badgers out once and for all." They had no idea, however, that the new deputy didn't plan to merely drive the badgers out of the territory, but drive them into a certain couple of camps.
