My dog is not aggressive but he is scared of new dogs and new people and it's the same with a friends dog and it would be nice if they could get along (because sometimes if we or they are going on a trip we could watch the other's dogs)

You can start by going on some leash walks together. The dogs don't need to meet close up right away or even for a few days. Walk single file, at first two to five feet apart (depending on how your dogs reach to each other), with you two changing on who walks in front. If they are doing well walk side by side, also spend time walking toward each other but not letting the dogs meet at first. If they seem to want to say hi let them sniff each other for a few seconds and continue walking. Just don't force them to meet each other as issues could happen. I would bring treats for rewarding but wouldn't treat them right beside each other if either dog has food issues. Try and always to end on a good note.
As my trainers say, dogs can and will get to know each other without face to face meetings.
