“It’s a strange place, and its folks are even stranger.”
Pann rubbed his head against the ground in front of him. It had a sore spot on it from where he’d mishandled a jump over a fallen tree on his way here. He’d a habit of following the human vehicles up and down, in order to find the food that humans inevitably threw away. Normally, their dirt roads were also pretty good for finding termites (which tasted minty), ants, worms and snails. Brilliant if you liked eating insects, and Pann did. He didn’t so much like the getting led off the path on a wild goose chase (not so literally) by a pair of rather tasty-looking mice. Sure, he’d caught the mice, and they were amazing, but by this point, rain had started falling (as it always seemed to do in the mid-afternoon in a rainforest, outside that year’s Dry Moons), and he’d lost his scent to head back to the dirt road. He’d gotten awfully lost. He’d found a human village, and a clearing (which had had another tasty treat for him, and he’d hesitated a long time in order to check for traps so he could have it), before !Ayka finished hunting down the sun.
It was a while after this that Pann caught the scent of a fellow dog-fox. The fresher end fell Eastwards, so Pann followed it, hoping at least that this dog might know the way back to camp.
Pann emerged into a second clearing, with flowers all around him (as flowers always were in the rainforest, outside that year’s Dry Moons), and a sleeping dog fox on the ground in front.
Pann shoved the other fox with a paw. He startled awake, and upright, into a neat sitting position. The dog’s eyes hit Pann, then seemed to fly upwards to the sky, looking at no point in particular.
Pann got stared daggers in return. “No blessing’s needed; that’s not a sneeze or cough, or anything else of that sort, that’s Kiztoh, the language for the gods, which you must have heard-“ The other fox’s eyes scanned him up and down. “Or at least you ought.”
“Sounded like a good mix of both. Which way’s the road?”
“The roads whatever choice you take, as it’s the only path you’ll make.”
“Helpful.”
The other fox sighed, clearly realising only at this point that the effort of poetry and being wise was a waste on Pann. He lifted a paw and pointed roughly in the right direction. “That way. Although !Ayka and !Ayhwao specifically sent you here, I’m sure, and I’d really recommend you not just leave.”
“Right. Why?”
“Because you leaving now would be a declaration of your disdain for the gods!”
“I disdain everything.”
“But the skies turning against you would surely lead to your death, and cleaning up your body from whatever fate you met would rather put off any other potential members of this skulk.”
Pann shrugged slightly, with a look of total indifference, like disposal of his own body weren’t the conversation topic. “Fun times.”
“Truly Trahnun’s mind is focused here on this moon.” Vshaqhti muttered in Vloi (assuming from Pann only speaking in Karnni so far that he could only speak in Karnni). “What could persuade you not to just abandon this skulk, then?”
“To be able to leave whenever you start rhyming again, and to be able to eat as many bugs as I want.”
“Is that all?”
“I’ve learned not to expect too much.”
“But if we do not expect everything in a certain manner, then we have no proper sense of outrage when things go wrong, or are unjust.”
“Outrage is tiring. And you’re asking me to make a bigger request?”
The older fox huffed at Pann. “Fine. You can have that.”
It took a long while to actually get Panne!kakos to say his name, and especially his full name. It took just the words “we don’t have much food.” To get him to start acting in a helpful way for the skulk, however.

For giving this fox that to me you did assign.
