anger festers inside of you-- a bubble of hatred sat in your throat clogging it. the breath that you inhale is met with a hard ball of rage, and the oxygen that's supposed to travel to your head is instead running through your veins at a rapid rate. you feel high on anger-- and you feel a distance between your brain and your mouth. it's then that you begin to spiral. downwards-- hatred spews, anger pours, rage comes out in jets and harsh, stinging words. you call them worthless-- you call them trash-- you tell them that you never needed them and that you were just using them. you feel them shrinking slowly, and you feel powerful-- angry-- hateful. you yell and you scream and you shout until they snap. anger. anger. anger. they yell back-- you yell back. your nails, sharp and stinging, dig into your fleshy palms and leave distinct, red, cresent marks. you're screaming. you're crying. you're yelling.
and then it becomes quiet.

Reasons why you love her:
1. She can't sing.
----
You never knew love until you heard her sing-- and dear lord, she couldn't sing. She couldn't sing if her life depended on it. The way her voice cracks at high notes and crumbles at low notes-- or the way her lisp shows up randomly on some words and not on other words-- or the way her southern accent is incredibly heavy when she says the word 'before' or 'summer'-- it was all so terribly horrible, and you loved every bit of it.
"You can't sing."
"And yet you love me anyway."
"Shut up."
----
Reasons why you love her:
1. She can't sing.
2. She could kick. Really hard.
----
You never knew love until you saw her toss several buff men over her shoulder after they made several misogynistic comments before fighting her. The way she had made sharp-witted comments about the fight-- and the way they shied away for the rest of the karate class-- and the way she smirked with that dimple etched in her cheek-- and the way she giggled softly when you told her that you were now scared of her.
"Boo! I'm super scary now that I've proved my worth!"
"You were always scary-- have you even looked in a mirror?"
"Oh shush, you."
----
Reasons why you love her:
1. She can't sing.
2. She could kick. Really hard.
3. She dances like no one's watching when she knows everyone is.
----
You never knew love until you saw her at graduation. The way the dress she wore was loose fitting and modest, but somehow still made her seem like the sun to you-- the way she pulled you up right after the DJ started the song list, went to the middle of the dance floor, and just started spinning you-- the way her eyes sparkled when you told her that you had two left feet and suddenly she was determined to teach you-- the way she chortled and snorted every time you told her a wimpy excuse to leave the dance floor-- and the way she eventually let you go, and you just watched her highlighted figure on the dance floor alone, because everyone else was too busy eating or worrying.
"You're staring again."
"So is everyone else."
"Oh please, you know you like this."
"You know I do."
----
Reasons why you love her:
1. She can't sing.
2. She could kick. Really hard.
3. She dances like no one's watching when she knows everyone is.
4. She cracks jokes that makes everyone cringe-- and then she laughs at them.
----
You never knew love until you saw her on the floor, practically rolling with laughter at her own joke. The way she tells the starter to the joke with a breathy anticipation and excitement-- the way she punches you playfully when you stall her joke with stupid one-liners-- the way she can barely tell the joke without breaking out in laughter-- the way her joke is so terribly punny only she laughs-- the way her laughs range from giggles to chuckles to snorting to out-of-breath laughter.
"What do you call a cow with no legs?"
"By their name."
"I mean--"
"Dead."
"No just--"
"An unfortunate accident-- ow! That was rude."
"You deserve that-- plus, you're smiling! That barely hurt!"

3. She dances like no one's watching when she knows everyone is.
4. She cracks jokes that makes everyone cringe-- and then she laughs at them.
5. She wears makeup, even if it's portrayed as girly.
----
You never knew love until you saw her without makeup for the first time. The way she strolls confidently down the hallway with or without makeup-- the way she tightens her jaw when someone mentions the fact she isn't wearing makeup and retorts when they say it's too girly when she wears makeup-- the way she doesn't need makeup to be beautiful but wears it because it makes her feel that way-- the way that she feels fierce with makeup-- the way she feels amazing with makeup-- the way she is all of the above with or without makeup.
"You're not wearing makeup."
"You're also not wearing makeup."
"That's because I don't need makeup."
"Well, neither do I."
"Damn right you don't."

4. She cracks jokes that makes everyone cringe-- and then she laughs at them.
5. She wears makeup, even if it's portrayed as girly.
6. She's sensitive and insecure.
----
You never truly knew love until you saw her cry. And she breaks so beautifully. Sometimes you wonder if she's an angel-- a fallen angel who's wings were clipped on the journey down. The way she wipes her tears and tries to hide them-- the way she smiles through her sadness the entire time to make you feel better-- the way she thinks she's hard to read when she's really a glass figure-- the way she hugs herself closer to herself and makes herself seem so small and insignificant-- the way her hair falls messily in front of her face and splays out on her back-- the way the tears roll out and smug the careful mascara-- the way she says she's okay-- the way you know she isn't.
"I'm sorry I just-- I can't--"
"Hey-- look at me. Look at me. I'm here, I'm here."
"I know-- I'm okay-- I'm sorry."
"Yeah-- me too, because now I have to buy you ice cream."

6. She's sensitive and insecure.
7. She's gentle and kind.
----
You never knew love until you saw her talking to little kids. The way she brushed away their tears when they cried-- or the ginger touch of her slender fingers tussled their hair-- the way she kissed her thumb and used it to flip the page of the book she was reading-- the way she squinted slightly, her drooping eyebrows and pursed lips-- the way she smiled with that wonderful dimple on the left side of her cheek, plump pink lips curved upwards subtly.
"Are you okay?"
"No, I'm Andrew-- did you really laugh at that?"
"Shut up."

7. She's gentle and kind.
8. She's strong and beautiful.
----
You never knew love until you saw her during that one spring. When she doesn't care about her looks-- when she wears a loose-fitting sweater over her thin frame-- when she doesn't wear makeup-- when she cries over her parents-- when she dances in the rain to the tune of a song in her head-- when she sings along to it-- when she grabs your hands and starts spinning you-- when she makes a pun from that-- when she cracks a lopsided smile.

8. She's strong and beautiful.
9. Because she will never look in your direction.
----
You never knew love until you saw her on Monday. There's a feeling in your chest that travels to your lungs and clogs them. There's a heaviness that sinks it's claws into your shoulders and weighs you down slowly-- there's a bittersweet anger that hugs you, and wraps you in that husky and damp heat-- the one that spreads to your cheeks and causes red to spill on your skin. The way she smiles at you-- the way she nods and waves-- the way she then skips off-- the way she lands beside Michael-- the way he leans over slightly and rests his arm on her head-- the way she pouts up at him.
"Hey Andrew-- you know I love ya right?"
"Melanie?"
"You'll always be my best bestest friend!"
"Are you three? Don't pout-- you know I hate it when you do that."
