it had been only moons since the
sickness had ravaged through the
clan and taken their elders and
kits. that leafbare, tallkit had
been the only one to survive out
of her two brothers and her sister,
the only remainder of the success
and growth the clan had been
blessed with during the previous
greenleaf. for some time, it had
looked as if tallkit, too, would die,
but starclan had mercy with the
clan of the river, and had granted
them tallkit's life, to give hope.

some cats scorned that hope.

the nursery was quiet that night--
the air was cool and dark, and the
small scrap of fur slept easily until
the movements of her mother
disturbed her peaceful slumber. "be
still, tallkit," briarthorn murmured.
"i'm going to the dirtplace--i'll be
back in just a moment."

tallkit gave a mew of protest, but
the queen rasped her tongue over
the kit reassuringly. "don't worry,
little one. i'll be back." with that,
the queen made her way out of the
den, leaving tallkit alone in the
soft bed of moss and down.

tallkit had almost gone back to
sleep when a warm, soft figure
came back to her side. they sat
beside her, watching, and the kit
gave a soft mewl of comfort as
she cuddled close to their flank
where they sat.

a gentle purr rose in their throat.

"don't worry, tallkit." they mur-
-mured softly. "you can be with
your littermates very soon--we've
done you a disservice by prolonging
the inevitable." the cat leaned
down, warm tongue rasping gently
over her back, and she gave a pitiful
attempt at her own purr, mewling
once.

"sleep tight, little one."

that night, the hope for the future
was snuffed out, the killer leaving
behind her still and cooling body
in the blood-stained nest.

Lilypool blinked open her eyes, stretching. Glancing over at Littlepaw, she chuckled as she nudged her apprentice. "Time to get up and go about our day," she murmured to him. "I'll go check on Taillkit and Briarthorn," she told the young cat, grabbing boarage leaves for the queen and headed out to the nursery. "Morning Briarthorn," she meowed, the scent of death not reaching her until she dropped the leaves. "Wait, what happened?" Lilypool asked, worry in the medicine cat's eyes.

Silverfeather
She padded out of the warrior den. She didn't exactly want to wake foxfall yet but she wanted to talk to her sister, ospreystar. She trotted over to the leaders den where her sister now slept and mewwed in,"ospreystar are you up yet?"

acornfang sat quietly just outside the warriors' den, watching with bright eyes as the sun peaked over the horizon and scattered rays of light upon the ground. the golden brown female noticed lilypool starting her usual rounds and smiled at the medicine cat before returning to la-la land. however, it was lilypool's gasp that ripped her from her thoughts once more. "Is something wrong?" the newly appointed warrior asked, concern evident in her tone of voice, as she made her way over to where the medicine cat was standing with a pile of borage leaves at her paws.

Honeystorm woke up and groaned a bit. Yet another day of patrolling. Fun. She stretched and shook her long fur before padding outside to grab a minnow from the freshkill pile. She spotted Lilypool at the entrance to the nursery, leaves at her paws.

"G'morning, Lilypool," said Honeystorm cheerfully, padding up to the medicine cat. As she got closer, she began to feel uneasy. Why was there the scent of death coming from the nursery? She brushed past Lilypool and froze: Tallkit was lying there, dead. Honeystorm's fur fluffed up in fear and she looked around. Who--or what--could have done this?

acornfang turned slightly at the sound of her older sister's voice but didn't get the chance to say hello when she pushed past her and into the nursery. the golden brown female peered over honeystorm's shoulder, trying to see what was making her fur fluff up in fear and shock. at the site of tallkit's dead body, acornfang froze in horror, not believing the site her eyes were showing her. the warrior shook her head in denial, stumbling back out the nursery the way she came, feeling slightly light headed. "tallkit was dead?"

Lilypool shook her head. "No idea Acornfang," Lilypool meowed. "But looks like she was killed in cold blood," she replied. "Alright, everyone out please, I can't work with a crowd, and can someone get Littlepaw to bring me lavender, and watermint?" she asked, her tail flicking. "Let me figure out what happened and I'll bring the body out," the medicine cat explained.
