hey guys, I know I'm not going to be getting another dog for a long while but I figured it doesn't hurt to start thinking ahead for when the time comes and I do get another dog. I have a couple of breeds I'm interested in but I'd like more suggestions and opinions.

Have you had dogs before? What breeds?
I have 1 dog now and he is an Australian Shepherd, I've had no other dogs before him.

Are there any breeds that have already caught your eye? If so, why?
Two breeds I'm interested in are Italian greyhounds and Chinese crested dogs. I really want a smaller dog than Jasper and one that sheds less or is short haired. With Jasper and my rabbits I am constantly vacuuming the carpet, I don't even bother to put the vacuum in the closet I just leave it out. I don't want to have to clean up so much dog fur to keep my allergies from acting up.

How much time a day do you have to devote to training your dog?
I can't say exactly how much time I'll have in the future but every free moment I have now is spent with Jasper so I'd say the same for any future dog.

What kind of grooming needs are you prepared to handle?
Any, I like grooming Jasper. More grooming or less I'm fine with, whatever the dog needs.

What kind of energy level are you looking for?
I'd like a dog that doesn't have a ton of energy like a border collie but a dog that isn't very lazy either so it can go on long walks around the lake or play fetch at the park. Jasper's a couch potato so I'm looking for more energy than that (to be fair though he does like his short walks and about ten minutes of fetch here and there but he's stubborn and will refuse to do either if he doesn't feel like it. I can't take him to the dog park for fetch of course because of his reactive behavior toward other dogs so we play fetch inside or in the backyard at my dad's house).

What do you plan on doing with your dog?
I'm mostly looking for a companion so I mostly just want it to be with me, lay on the couch, go out for long or short walks, join me in short car rides to places or when I go visit family like Jasper does.

What size dog are you wanting?
    A small dog.

What age dog are you looking for?
Preferably a puppy, I want a puppy from a good breeder. I know there are lots of small dogs and such in shelters that need homes, I get that. Enough people have told me to adopt dogs from shelters and I don't wish to hear that again. I get it. But I've made my decision, I want a puppy from a breeder and that's that.

What kind of livestyle do you live? (Active, couch potato etc)
Mostly couch potato since I do like watching lots of shows and movies and Jasper likes curling up on the couch to so we both sit around quite a bit, he has separation aniexty so I don't leave him alone much. Though I also enjoy getting out and doing things and I want a dog that will enjoy doing active things as well.

I know I'm biased, but have you considered a Bichon Frise? They do require a lot of grooming, but can be cut into different styles such as a puppy cut, which needs less work than a show cut.
They're quite a flexible breed too. Lacey (my pup) loves to walk a few miles some days, but others just likes to lounge around and play. They also have brilliant characters, they're charming little dogs for sure but also very intelligent. They can be stubborn, but love to learn.
They're also not as fragile as other small breeds, which is a bonus for me haha.

I second a Bichon. They're great dogs and sound like a good match for you. I think an Italian greyhound might be a little too sensitive, but I don't have a lot of experience with the breed.

I "third" a Bichon Frise  ^^
It actually seems like a perfect match for you; small dog size, couch potato but a little lively at the same time (bichons are quite flexible like that), the right energy level.
They are very lovable and, although I don't have much experience with the breed, I do recommend one someday ^^

Do you for sure know your dog likes the food? My dogs are really picky, and only eat a certain brand of food. I would maybe try to hand feed him some pieces and see if he doesn't sure likes it, if not you can get some wet food to mix in with it (my dogs liked that) If it's the bowl, maybe he doesn't like the sound of his collar in the bowl, because the water is up higher. If you need to, I would just put his food on a plate. One of my dogs is afraid of the clinking noise his collar makes when he's eating XD

For the bath, I don't really know how to fix it. Ny dogs are the same way, but we just give them treats when they're done, so they know they can trust us.

I hope this helps! Good luck xx

A bucket and a wet sponge. Have no water in the bath. Gentally dab the wet sponge on him. When he's wet, try your best to shampoo and clean him. I found it helps. I groomed a few, alot of dogs before.

awww poodle are cute, i sadly only know two toy a middle and some large poodle a little bit from meeting them on walks or with my old groomer where i did go now and then when we did still go to dog Shows.... they are lovely and funny! :)

i did write about potty trainig a page back so you can look at it, hope it helps, when not ask, i try bether...;)
(talk with your Family who will bring her out when at night and day to those hours, so that you get work done and each enough sleep ;) and with whome she will sleep till she is fully houseroken and gets to sleep for 6h without needing to go out!!)

first days....hmm...is some year ago now but i can try:) when something is unclear what i did write just ask here or in a message^^
hópe this helps ateast a little

Do you aleady own all things needed?
feed and water bowl, a dog bed for the room one for the dog crate, maybe even a Little dogplaypen to put infront of the dogcrate where you can bring the Girl when you Need to go out for a Moment or cat wattch her for some minutes....
brushes, comb, feed wet and dry, towel, some toys, Supplement for puppys, first aid kit, leash collar, long training leash (10-20m), and such

cleaning supplies for your home:
like OXY Pet Stain Remover - Carpet Cleaning with Oxygen Power - Clean Tough Spots and Stains with Ease - Carpets, Rugs, Upholstery, and Laundry
Pet Stain & Odor Remover, Enzyme Cleaner, Odor Eliminator, Best Carpet Stain Remover, Pet Odor Eliminator, Stain Remover, Odor Neutralizer
or such....but try to use natural, puppy healthy cleaner!
( accidents can always happen and to clean up any stain or odor is best or she will go there again^^)

and what ever else you may need^^

- we had a crate for each of our two puppy with a soft dog bed inside and a cuddly blaket and a soft toy...
and a blanket to cover part of it to make a dog-den (we had those large wire dog crates that you can fold down and use on Shows or travel...they are nice airy and big for them to stay in over night or at Show and turn aroun without Problem even when adult....)
--> they had outside also a place (a not to expensive but still good dog bed as they sometimes chew while playing when still puppys^^) to sleep over the day
- dont do to much at the first days, just show her your home, and where she should not go in, all done calmly
---> but first off go asap as soon as you are home and out of the car, to the place she should go pee and such and let her do her thing^^ so she knows where the place is for her potty, when you do it well and go there all the time she will accep the place and will not do it everywhere in your Yard or pasture you use....
( you aleady do start the training with this place showing for sleep and toilet and rules in home, and pee times, and Play or calm down times.....the puppy Needs to sleep still often over the day, so Show him that she can and Needs to calm down now and then and when you sit next to her or let her sleep in her dog bed next to you or someone from your Family when you sit somewhere^^)

- maybe play a little but not to much and to wild, you even could try a short walk near your home and also Show her where she can do pee and where not...but no Problem when a accident happens she will learn.

- at the first day they often can be a bit unsure and look for her mother or siblings, but dont react to every whinny or bark of her, just watch her look at her new home and learn your dayly working

So the best Thing is to make a list:
- what items you have- or still Need to buy
- rules for dog and Family ( commandos too, you all must do the same, same words for all commandos ...and not that one accepts the dog maybe in the kitchen or the bed and the other says no...the dog would go crazy, ;) )
- feeding times are too important...the breeder should have the puppy at 3-4 times each day ( when possible always at the same time!)....so stay to it for some weeks, then maybe go down to 3 times a day and later 2 times when old enough....
- pee time is also a must do....like i did write on the page back :!:

- look for a dog place, and go to there puppy training-this is fun and help the puppy go along with other breeds of Dogs and other People too :D ,..... but i think it is good for a first time owner to look for a good trainer, a puppy Group on a og place, a nice dog park, ....and also try to walk now and then with other dog owner who have a well trained dog....dog playing together is good too.... :!: (my girl had a old Nefi male to play with and her "sister" dog)

social training is a to do thing- go now to new places, try out new thing, but do so slowly and with care and always calm and gentle, calm voice and sure movements....when dog is unsure about a new thing like maybe an umbrella sit it down and sit next to it calling your puppy to you and praise ever step to you, also can do as if you play with the new thing touch it whatever as if ist a fully normal Thing and nothing where you think that the puppy may be unsure.

so when this was to unlear or you dont understand something, just ask.
and the other dog owner will help you too and can tell you what they did at the first days
Please klick them or they will die°°!!!
