Wishful Thinking. wrote:hey guys, I know I'm not going to be getting another dog for a long while but I figured it doesn't hurt to start thinking ahead for when the time comes and I do get another dog. I have a couple of breeds I'm interested in but I'd like more suggestions and opinions.
Have you had dogs before? What breeds?
I have 1 dog now and he is an Australian Shepherd, I've had no other dogs before him.
Are there any breeds that have already caught your eye? If so, why?
Two breeds I'm interested in are Italian greyhounds and Chinese crested dogs. I really want a smaller dog than Jasper and one that sheds less or is short haired. With Jasper and my rabbits I am constantly vacuuming the carpet, I don't even bother to put the vacuum in the closet I just leave it out. I don't want to have to clean up so much dog fur to keep my allergies from acting up.
How much time a day do you have to devote to training your dog?
I can't say exactly how much time I'll have in the future but every free moment I have now is spent with Jasper so I'd say the same for any future dog.
What kind of grooming needs are you prepared to handle?
Any, I like grooming Jasper. More grooming or less I'm fine with, whatever the dog needs.
What kind of energy level are you looking for?
I'd like a dog that doesn't have a ton of energy like a border collie but a dog that isn't very lazy either so it can go on long walks around the lake or play fetch at the park. Jasper's a couch potato so I'm looking for more energy than that (to be fair though he does like his short walks and about ten minutes of fetch here and there but he's stubborn and will refuse to do either if he doesn't feel like it. I can't take him to the dog park for fetch of course because of his reactive behavior toward other dogs so we play fetch inside or in the backyard at my dad's house).
What do you plan on doing with your dog?
I'm mostly looking for a companion so I mostly just want it to be with me, lay on the couch, go out for long or short walks, join me in short car rides to places or when I go visit family like Jasper does.
What size dog are you wanting?
A small dog.
What age dog are you looking for?
Preferably a puppy, I want a puppy from a good breeder. I know there are lots of small dogs and such in shelters that need homes, I get that. Enough people have told me to adopt dogs from shelters and I don't wish to hear that again. I get it. But I've made my decision, I want a puppy from a breeder and that's that.
What kind of livestyle do you live? (Active, couch potato etc)
Mostly couch potato since I do like watching lots of shows and movies and Jasper likes curling up on the couch to so we both sit around quite a bit, he has separation aniexty so I don't leave him alone much. Though I also enjoy getting out and doing things and I want a dog that will enjoy doing active things as well.

I know I'm biased, but have you considered a Bichon Frise? They do require a lot of grooming, but can be cut into different styles such as a puppy cut, which needs less work than a show cut.
They're quite a flexible breed too. Lacey (my pup) loves to walk a few miles some days, but others just likes to lounge around and play. They also have brilliant characters, they're charming little dogs for sure but also very intelligent. They can be stubborn, but love to learn.
They're also not as fragile as other small breeds, which is a bonus for me haha.

I second a Bichon. They're great dogs and sound like a good match for you. I think an Italian greyhound might be a little too sensitive, but I don't have a lot of experience with the breed.

my dog doesnt eat his dry kibble out of the bowl, at least i havent seen him do so, he drinks out of a bowl just fine, should i switch his food? how else can i solve this
hes also scared of baths, is there any way i can ease him or does he have to get used to it? i'd really appreciate the help

Do you for sure know your dog likes the food? My dogs are really picky, and only eat a certain brand of food. I would maybe try to hand feed him some pieces and see if he doesn't sure likes it, if not you can get some wet food to mix in with it (my dogs liked that) If it's the bowl, maybe he doesn't like the sound of his collar in the bowl, because the water is up higher. If you need to, I would just put his food on a plate. One of my dogs is afraid of the clinking noise his collar makes when he's eating XD
For the bath, I don't really know how to fix it. Ny dogs are the same way, but we just give them treats when they're done, so they know they can trust us.
I hope this helps! Good luck xx

My dad did, yet that was when he was much younger. Nonetheless, this is my first pup. I would like maybe some advice to treating her on her first day, potty training and such?
Thank you :3
They are supposedly the second smartest doggo breed and have long life spans and such but I still need some advice.
Alma
