rotten prey didn't kill that fast. Yet...
when he had inspected the vole, he
found no trace of water hemlock or
deathberries, and none of the herbs
were missing from their usual growing
places when he had checked that morning.
The tom couldn't shake off a sense of
dread. His dream floated in the front
of his mind, and he looked around at the
clanmates gathered around the body of
Riverclan's deceased deputy. He had to
say something.
"Starclan has abandoned us." The
medicine cat breathed, and the clan
fell dead silent, their eyes freezing on
the hunched over tom. Blazenose's gaze
shifted upwards quickly before flicking
down to his paws. "I.. had a dream."
The clan burst into an uproar.
Lilystar stood, her voice booming to be
heard over the mob. "Calm down!
Just because we are on our own doesn't
mean we are doomed! We've survived
worse before without the help of
Starclan."
"My kits will grow up fatherless."
Bramblingflower mewed softly. "Parents
lost entire litters. Mentors lost their
apprentices. This is what happens when
Starclan abandons us." Her voice was
melancholy- the clan leader flattened her
ears. She knew her clan was falling to
despair. Without Starclan... who knew
what the next day would bring?

Sweetnose lapped at his pad, a small
twig wedged between his two middle
toes. His ears flicked towards the med-
icine den, which was where he was
headed. His nest hadn't been changed in
a while, so the past few days the tom
had been sharing with Rosetail. Un-
fortunately, when he had rolled over,
his paw caught on the edge of the
nest and tore. It had begun to bleed,
and the tom decided it would be a
wise idea to get either Blazenose or
Lavenderleaf to check it.
"Are you okay?" A voice near
the elderly tom rose from the shadows.
Sweetnose turned, smiling as he saw
the cat.
"I was just heading over to the
medicine den actually. I tore my pad,
and, well..." He lifted the paw in
question, a small amount of blood
encrusting the edges.
The other cat nodded slowly as they
observed. "It isn't that bad... A
lick should help. Would you like to do
it yourself, or...?"
Sweetnose chuckled. "Thank you,
but these old bones aren't that useless
just yet!"
The other cat twitched their whiskers,
a small smile on their face. "Okay,
well, I'm going back to sleep now. Don't
stay up too late, you need your energy!"
And with that, the cat headed back to their
nest.
Sweetnose sat, lapping the wound for a
moment before placing it back to the
ground and looking around the camp. It
was quite peaceful at that time of night-
the only cat active was Sweetnose himself.
It made him feel young, but... time seemed
to slow around the tom. The peace was
settling heavy on his shoulders. He glanced
towards the warriors den, imagining the shapes
of his daughters curled in their nests, tails
flicked over their noses and chests rising
and lowering.
The tom exhaled slowly, closing his eyes.
It was all so... calming.
Slowly, Sweetnose stood, trotting towards
his and his mate's shared nest. He settled
against Rosetail's flank, his tail twining with
hers. The tom nuzzled her ear, breathing in
her sweet, colorful scent for the last time.
His weary body finally let go.
