At the news that Finchpelt is dead Rosetail abruptly stops eating, looking up to the cat who bore the news. All her warm, happy feelings immediately flee. Not again, she cries in her head. Not more death!

Morningdove flicked his tail, watching the other cats. His usually cocky self was quiet and grieving.as he sighed. You didn't deserve to die, Flinchpelt. Whoever did this will surely pay. He blinked at Rosetail and sat down next to her, head low in sadness and grief for his dead clanmate.

Sweetnose's senses were so overwhelmed by the fish he was gobbling down that he didn't notice the return of Foxfall and the ensuing panic. He had just finished picking the bones clean as was about to declare victory when he felt Rosetail stiffen besides him. The news takes a moment to register in his brain. "Dead? Finchpelt?" The elder could still see traces of the warrior's rose around the Riverclan camp, mingling with the memories of other stale, dead warriors. "This is aweful." He pressed up against his mate, subconsciously wrapping himself in her green as armor against memories.

Poor Shiverthorn was in shock after the news. Finchpelt.. Dead? It was too much.
Far too much. Her old friend was gone and she never even had the chance to say goodbye. Finding his body by the water, well, she couldn't handle it. Dropping to the ground, her grief overcame her and the she-cat wailed out so loud cats of every Clan could hear her.

Rosetail trembles and gratefully leans into her mate. Her mind flies back to the tragedy that befell them more recently and all those who died, especially Risenflame. He had his whole life ahead of him, was primed for a leading spot. Everyone loved him.
Not again, not again!

Lavenderleaf's heart clenches as she walked over to nuzzle the small silver kit. "No, no scary badgers," She smiled. The four sat is silence for awhile as they watched Silverkit attempt to wake her sister. The sight made Lavender's heart swell with love for the tiny kits she had come to know in the short few months of their lives. Lavender laughed at the tiny kits greeting as she kindly returned it, "Hello to you too, sleepyhead!" Swatting at the arching kitten Lavenderleaf paused, and turned her attention at the commotion going on outside. Bramblingflower's next words were chilling, D-dead!? N-no~ Finchpelt! My brother! Lavenderleaf immediately shot outside yelling an apology to the ladies inside.
She bumped into Lilystar, "I-I..." Lavenderleaf stammed, nodding in understatement to her orders. "I'll tell him the news."

Lavenderleaf never ran so fast in her life. Even though the medicine den wasn't that far from the nursery it felt like it was several thousand fox-leaps away with the news fresh on her mind.
Lavender burst inside with tears brimming in her eyes. "Blazenose wake up!!!" She screamed, jumping onto the groggy male. "Our brother is dead -- Finchpelt is dead!!!"

however, blazenose was not in the medicine cat den.

there was a soft thump, a small bundle of herbs falling into the dust of the clearing floor, and when lilystar turned her head, blazenose stood there, the small tom's green eyes widened. he opened his mouth, whiskers trembling, before he closed it again, expression twisting with sorrow. "...finchpelt is... dead?" he asked, voice low, even. his gaze turned to foxfall, before he fixed it back on the leader. "lilystar, is this true? are you certain?"

The tom lay sprawled in the clearing, his body
unusually flat and lifeless. It was... unnatural.

Lilystar shook her head, her heart weighed with
grief. Lavenderleaf sat, sniffling lightly with her
flank pressed to her adopted brother, the pair's
eyes centered on the fallen form that had linked
them together all those moons ago. Blazenose
sighed slowly, trying to push his dark thoughts
away. There was nothing that he or Lavender-
leaf could have done. Finch had been dead
when they arrived. It still felt like he should do
something, but the tom didn't know what.

Lavenderleaf stamped her paw. "We have to...
to avenge him!"

The clan swiveled their heads towards the
purple shecat, eyes wide and curious. Usually,
the medicine cat apprentice was a bit strange,
but... not enough surely, to accuse a fellow
clanmate of... murdering her adopted half-
brother?

"But.. a tree fell on him. What could we do?
It was the will of Starclan..." Brambling-
flower mewed softly, flinching back as the other
shecat retorted quickly.

"There were pawmarks in the mud next to
the tree! Somecat had been with him, or had
been at the site before we did... they didn't
tell- they didn't tell us that... that my brother
is dead. They ran! Like a coward!" Now the
medicine cat apprentice was visibly upset, her
paws shaking and her voice wavering. "And
you... you've been harsh towards him since
Risenflame died!" Finchpelt had been one
of the warriors that had gone with the patrol-
one of the warriors that ran for help and
abandoned Risenflame to the foxes.

A gasp emitted from Bramblingflower's jaws,
her eyes beginning to well up. "How dare
you disgrace the-"

A new voice rose from the hoard of gathered
cats. "Lavenderleaf, why are you pointing
paws!? For all we know, you yourself could
have been seeing your own forsaken pawsteps!"

Murmurs of agreement rushed in waves
through the crowd, and they nodded to their
neighbors. Lilystar's eyes flashed. "Enough!"

The leader of Riverclan leaped gracefully
from her perch above the clan, her tail
lashing. "There will be no talk of murder!
Finchpelt has died, yes, and he will be
mourned greatly. This does not mean that
we must run around blaming each other for
something that was so obviously an accident!"
Her gaze centered on Bramblingflower and
Lavenderleaf for a moment.

After a beat, the clan shushed, casting
apologetic glances at each other. Of course it
was only an accident. One cat in the group
let out a slow breath of relief. Their secret
was safe, for now.

A cat lay in their nest, eyes open as they
stared at the ceiling of their den. The soft
snores of their clanmates soothed them a
tad, but their mind was restless that night.
Closing their eyes, the cat shuddered as
they thought to the events of the previous
quarter moon. Their clanmates were right- it
was the fault of a cat. I could have got-
ten help... I could have warned him sooner,
I could have.... No.. there was nothing I
could have done, even if... A rustle
snapped the cat to attention, and they
slowly crept out of their den. Lichendrop
was picking over the fresh kill pile, her
tail flicking lightly as she nosed for the
choice bits of prey left over from the day.

The cat trotted over to the deputy. She
lifted her head, perking her heads. "Can't
sleep?" The cat shook their head. "Here,
you can share this with me." Lichendrop
smiled, pushing a vole towards the cat. Not
wanting to seem rude, the cat settled next
to their deputy and took a small nibble
before passing it back to Lichendrop. It
tasted slightly bitter, but the cat put it off
as just remains from the thyme they had
eaten earlier. Finchpelt's death still haunted
them at nights.

"Can I... tell you something?" The
cat mewed huskily, their eyes at their paws.

Lichendrop nodded, interest piqued. "Of
course, anything." She paused, looking
strangely at the vole at her paws, but the
other cat didn't notice. "Actually, I have
something, too... A few days ago, I had this
weird dream... and I think Starclan was
talking to me... they said The bloom ha-"

"It- it's my fault. Finchpelt- Risenflame,
the apprentices. It's... it's all my fault!"
The cat rushed their words, cutting off
Lichendrop without realizing what she was
saying. But surely what they had to say was
so much more important, wasn't it?

It felt good to get it off their chest. Raising
their eyes, the cat expected Lichendrop to
recoil in fear and disgust, raising the alarm
to exile them. But.. that wasn't what they
found at all. "Lichendrop!" They gasped
out in a panicked manner.

It was too late. The shecat's mouth foamed
as her body reacted to the maggot-filled
vole. Now the cat could clearly smell the
sickness rising from it- Stupid! They
began to hyperventilate. There was nothing
nearby. By the time they could have done
anything, the deputy would have been dead.

And they couldn't stay. If the clan found
them next to the body, and then it was
revealed that Finchpelt had died because
of them, too....

They slipped away back into their nest,
but the cat didn't sleep that night.
Oh no! One of your witnesses has
died!
