Re: Quitting: Writing Contest! [EXTENDED]

I am applying for:

1. Sunback
2. | Store pets |
3. Orange Cerberus

Let's see, where do I start off? Well, my name is Labrador_Lover. It has been difficult for me to choose just one topic to write about, as I was torn between art and animals, but, in the end, I decided to go with animals. I love any and all animals, from spiders to snakes, and snails to sharks. There is not one animal I dislike.

I've loved animals all my life, but this passion really started when I was 3 or 4. As a young girl, I have always been around animals. My grandma has owned cats, dogs, birds, fish... you name it. I went to her house a lot and often spent time with the animals. We also would go to a pond and give some food to the ducks there during the winter time. What made me start to realize how much I loved animals, was when there was a baby rattlesnake in my neighbors yard. I watched as they screamed, brought a shovel out, and killed the small creature. This broke my heart, and I was too young to understand why they did it. Now I know it's mostly out of fear, fear that the animal is "dangerous" or "will hurt come out and attack you for no reason at all".

Pt. 1; The Misunderstood

It really kills me inside to see so many people judging an animal. So what if one time a shark bit a person? That doesn't mean they are all bad! In fact, the World Health Organization estimates that over 600,000 people die each year after being bitten by mosquitoes bearing the deadly malaria parasite. I have never met a single person deathly afraid of mosquitoes , but I've met plenty of people afraid of sharks. Animals like that are misunderstood. Doing some research, I've found that 17,000+ people die from falls each year. That's a 1 in 218 chance over your lifetime, compared to a 1 in 3,700,000 chance of being killed by a shark. Sharks aren't the only misunderstood create there is, but snakes, crocodiles and spiders too. (Lol, to me, pythons look like puppies. Omg, I want to just hug one ♡) I have a friend, who's terrified of snakes... and my goal with our friendship, is to help her overcome the fear. Even if I could change just 1 persons mind, it would be amazing. 1 person out of 7.5 billion doesn't seem like much, but there are many more animal lover out there too, and that 1 person can help make a difference. That one person can convince their friend not to fear animals, and their friend might convince their friend not to fear animals, etc, etc. I want to be the person who changes people point of view on animals, and make them appreciate them. I obviously cannot make everyone a crazy animal obsessed person {like myself} but I hope I can get at least 100 people in my lifetime to get over a fear of any kind of animal.

Pt. 2; Those In Need Of A Home

It's not just the misunderstood animals that need help, but the homeless ones as well. It may seem cruel to know that a recent study by Best Friends Animal Society found that half of Americans surveyed believe that approximately 500 dogs and cats are euthanized every day in shelters across the country. The ugly truth is, while better than in years past, is a number far more staggering: 9,000. While "no-kill" shelters can seem great at first, there are a few flaws to it. The first one, is some of the more "non-appealing" or "older" animals stay in small cages in the shelter their whole lives, which can lead to anxiety, depression, and aggressiveness. Another flaw, is that most no-kill shelter are always at their maximum capacity, and often refuse to take in any animal after that. Doesn't matter if it's a kitten or an abused dog, they simply cannot take the animal in. That's absolutely absurd, refusing one in need. A small fact about me, is I have 100+ dollars saved up, and when I get a job I will have 3-4 jobs; an artist, a writer, a vet, and possibly another job, mostly because I want to be fairly wealthy, because one of my main goals to help animals, is a no-kill shelter that has 10 x 10 cages for dogs, and 2 to 3 dogs in each cage. I want to make sure they are socialized, and are okay with people and other dogs, and most importantly; I want them to be happy. I want to own around 5 square miles of land (2400 acres) to make that possible. I will never refuse an animal in need, no matter what.

Pt. 3; Those who abuse, sell (for money) and hoard animals

Animal abuse is an extremely heartbreaking case that is much more common than it should be. Animals matter, too. They are not some toys where you can do what you please with them, hit them, throw them, whatever. They have feelings too, and if you treat them right, they will be your friend for life. They cannot be put into itty-bitty cages for the rest of their lives and be expected to live there. I bet you wouldn't like it either, am I right? Those who hoard animals, disgust me. Not saying that if you have a huge farm, own 6 dogs, 5 cats, and a lot of livestock is gross, but living in an apartment and owning 10+ dogs and cats without properly caring for them is disgraceful. Animals are not just there, they simply do not just exist so someone can keep buying more and more of them only to out them in crappy living conditions and completely ignore them. No. No. No. That I should not how they want to live their lives! Please, don't do this! Moving onto those that constantly breed animals and sell the offspring, which might very likely be unhealthy and have multiple health problems. Puppy mills and places like those, force dogs to breed, and often the parents have diseases, and sell puppies, valuing their profit over the well-being of the dogs. These puppies are usually kept in unsanitary conditions. Another topic I will briefly go over is fur farms. Often, animals like the raccoon dog and arctic fox, are taken from their natural habitat because they are so popular in clothing. They are handled carelessly, and sometimes skinned alive. This is absolutely disgusting, horrid, and inhuman. Then, whole they're still freaking breathing, they are thrown onto a pile of other animals that have been skinned alive. Some dead, and some alive. All this for a freaking scarf or coat, or maybe a nice pair of boots. This is just cruel. There is no way any human with a soul would believe this process is okay. A final thing under this category, is circuses. Yes, those little shows you go to watch with the animals doing cool tricks! Maybe there is a bear walking on its hind legs and balancing something on its nose, ooh, or maybe a tiger is jumping through a hoop! Sound familiar? Most people who have gone to a circus (I myself have been to one at the age of 7), never give a though about the animals. They're just like, wow, that's so cool! But nobody ever thinks of the process that the animals go through to learn these tricks. They are often taken away as a baby, and forced into small cages to live for the rest of their life. They are whipped, beaten, and traumatized. And what for? Oh, right.... the entertainment of us humans. It's sick what some humans do to these animals. Luckily, one of the biggest circus businesses in the world, the Ringling Brothers, recently was shut down. Permanently

Pt. 3; Endangered Species/Habitat Loss

It's really awful to know that scientists estimate that 150-200 species of plant, insect, bird and mammal become extinct every 24 hours. Now, most of them are microscopic, but that's still 150-200 species lost a day. That would mean 54750-73000 that go extinct each year, and 54900-73200 species that go extinct in a leap year. That many species, lost, dead, gone. Forever. More and more, us humans are cutting into their habitat, leaving the animal no place to go, and it will eventually starve to death. Currently, the amur leopard and white rhino are on the brink of extinction. I am a helper on Guess the Breed, and I was shocked to see that after I looked up animals that might go extinct in 2017, cheetah was on the list. Cheetahs have been my favorite animals all my life. In my lifetime, I do not wish to see a beautiful creature like this disappear forever, nor any other creature on earth.

Pt. 4; The "Ugly" Animals

Let's face it. Us humans are more attracted to something aesthetically pleasing, rather than something missing a face and all dirty. We tend to choose the "beautiful" things and avoid the "ugly" things. This is the same with animals. Most people who were going to adopt a pet, would go for let's say, a perfect weight, glossy lab rather than a beat-up, face half missing, extremely underweight poodle. But those who look past looks, wouldn't care of the pet was considered "ugly" or not. If they see an animal in need, they'd help it out. Here's a super inspiring video, that you should watch, about a kitten being rejected for being "too ugly" but a 7 year old looks past it's appearance and helps it. It's absolutely heartwarming. https://youtu.be/yGwbDseku90

Pt. 5; Those Who Get A Loving Home And Family

I wanted to end on a happy note, so the final part to this would be about those animals that are lucky enough to live in a home with a big yard, and a nice family. Those animals can live much longer than those living in a circus or puppy mill. They will also more likely be less aggressive and more happy. If you treat an animal right, they will be loyal, and your best friend for life. You two could be perfect companions! It's up to all of us, to make sure that more and more animals get the living home they deserve!

Anyone who's reading this right now, will hopefully get their minds changed, or even think a little bit different than they had before. Maybe they would even start to help educate other people! YOU have that choice to make! YOU can walk out right now, and change the world! Animals have a right, too. They need a voice, one who could speak up for them, educate people on what really goes on... are you up for the challenge?
