Ashenclaw quickly trotted out of the camp. He had just sent out the hunting patrol and was now leaving on border patrol. Yes, all by himself. He was hoping to see Sheepclaw again today and didn't want anyone else to mess it up. Meanwhile, all the apprentices were out training. Birchpaw was much more of a quick learner than his siblings had thought, so they had greatly lessened their teasing, though, like all siblings, friendly banter was still common. Featherpaw was getting along well with them and loved when they all went out to train together.

"Thank StarClan leafbare's over," Applepaw mumbled. "Now we don't have to worry constantly about kits dying. All this catmint we found is going to go to waste, though." Willowcloud nodded sadly. "Yes, that's quite a bit of catmint we've got. Oh well, it's good to always be prepared." Applepaw padded over to his mentor, who was sorting the herbs, and sat next to her. "Would you like me to go herb hunting?" "Sure, that would be great. Thank you, Applepaw," she smiled at him, and he returned it. "No problem." Willowcloud watched him as he left the den. He was growing into a fine medicine cat, and deserved to have his full name. She sighed, deciding that she would wait one more moon to speak with Emberstar about it.

Dustfall padded along quietly beside Cloudtalon. Usually he would be very glad that all the snow was gone, due to the fact that he hated leafbare, but this time he was almost sad. His thoughts wandered to the time a moon ago when Tinyfeather had started the snowball fight. He smiled at the thought. She was adorable, really, but he could never tell anyone, let alone the she-cat herself. He had known for a few moons now that he had slight feelings for her, but they were getting stronger and he didn't know what to do. He didn't know if he could ever tell her - he was so shy and nervous. But the way she always smiled at him.... "Hey, Dustfall, you okay there?" Cloudtalon asked, snapping the older warrior out of his thoughts. "Y-yeah, I'm fine...."

Upon noticing that Frigidrose had left the den, Shadekit bounded towards Falconkit, who was stalking a leaf. She sneaked up behind him and then exclaimed, "Boo!" With a squeal of surprise, the tom-kit leapt away, the fur along his spine beginning to bristle. He laughed when he saw that it was only Shadekit. "Good one!" he giggled. Even though he was extremely embarrassed by his squealing, he tried to make fun of the moment. "Thank StarClan we didn't wake my mom," he whispered, glancing toward the sleeping Emberstar with her tail wrapped around her other two kits. "Ooh!" Shadekit whispered back. "I know what we could do! Let's go exploring!" "Where? In the camp?" Shadekit chuckled, shaking her head. "No, silly, the forest! Outside of camp." Falconkit paused a moment. "That doesn't seem like the best idea.... Our parents would be mad," he pointed out. "No, it will be fine! Trust me! Please?" little Shadekit pleaded. The tabby tom sighed heavily, giving in. "Alright, alright. Just not too long." "What, are you scared?" the she-kit taunted. "What? No, of course not," Falconkit said, puffing out his chest a little. Shadekit laughed. "Well come on then! There's a little opening in the back of the den. Follow me." She led him to a spot where the protection of brambles seperated a bit and she squeezed through, the other kit following after her. "Yes! We're out!" Shadekit squealed. "StarClan, that nursery was getting really stuffy." Falconkit was certainly unsure of all this. He wanted to go back - not because he was scared, but because he didn't want them to get into trouble. "See that rock over there?" the silver she-kit pointed with her nose. "Race you to it!" And with that, she was off. "What?! Wait!" Falconkit scrambled after her, having barely enough time to find the stone. Of course Shadekit beat him, she was a moon older and had a head start. When Falconkit reached the rock, he found that there was a river just a few fox-lengths beyond it. "Whoa..." he murmured. With the snow having just melted, it was moving swiftly, and the current looked very strong. The sight made him even more nervous about being outside the camp alone. "Come on!" Shadekit chirped. "I want to get closer to it." She began to walk towards the rushing water, but Falconkit quickly stopped her. "No, Shadekit. We need to get back. This isn't safe." She only laughed. "Scaredy-cat, scaredy-cat," she sang, pushing past him. Frustrated, the tom-kit leapt after her, tackling her and accidentally sending the two rolling toward the water's edge. They both shrieked and tried to sink their claws into the ground to stop themselves but it was too wet from the recently melted snow. Finally, Falconkit was able to get hold of some rushes and hung onto them for dear life, and Shadekit clung to one of his back legs. She squealed as her back paws dangled into the water, pulling her away from him. Falconkit's grip on the rushes lessened slightly with the weight of the both of them. "I - I can't hold on," Shadekit sobbed. Falconkit didn't know what to do. There was no way he could drag the two of them up the riverbank on this sludgy ground. Suddenly, he heard voices. The hunting patrol! They were coming to save them! "It's two of the kits!" he heard Honeydapple call. The pounding of paws running toward them sounded, but Shadekit kept slipping. "I can't do it..." she cried. "Just a little longer, Shadekit, please! Please hold on!" "I can't ... I ... I can't. I'm sorry," the little kit murmured. Just as Honeydapple and Cloudtalon appeared at the top of the riverbank, Shadekit fell. The rest was a blur for Falconkit. All he knew was that the patrol was able to rescue him and his throat was sore from screaming. He kept trying to look back at the river, but they wouldn't let him. Honeydapple carried him back to the camp, and Dustfall and Cloudtalon hurried to where the river shrank to a stream with hopes of finding the kit's body, while the other members of the patrol returned solemnly to their hunting. Frigidrose was shrieking and Breezekit and Cinderkit were huddled, scared, in a corner of the nursery. When the two warriors brought Shadekit's body back to the camp, her mother sobbed and sobbed over her. Emberstar refused to let her kits see, but Shadekit's siblings gazed out from the nursery entrance, their eyes wide with shock, their voices unable to function. Falconkit sobbed into his mother's fur. After the body was buried, Frigidrose stormed back into the nursery, fire in her eyes as she glared at Emberstar and Falconkit. Her ears were flattened, her fur bristling, and her lips drawn back in a snarl. "It's all your fault!" she spat at the kit. "If you wouldn't have convinced her to leave the camp, she wouldn't be dead right now!" Falconkit whispered, "B-but I didn't, it was her -" "No, it would never have been my kit. She was older, maturer - she was not mouse-brained like you! And it's your fault, too," she turned to Emberstar. "I can't believe you - the leader - would raise your own kit to be so unthinking of the consequences of his actions!" Emberstar, knowing it would be best not to snarl back at her, remained silent and let the queen continue to scream at her.

Tinyfeather woke, a smile on her face. She was going to do it today. She was going to ask Dustfall that one little question that had been troubling her day and night. Trotting out of the warriors' den, she began her search for the tom. With a frown, she noticed that he wasn't in the camp. Could he be out on a patrol? As she looked around, she spotted Ashenclaw still organizing them. StarClan, where is he? Suddenly she remembered she hadn't even checked if he was still sleeping. Chuckling at herself, she padded quickly back into the den, spying the brown-and-white warrior curled up in a corner. She silently crept up to him, then whispered loudly in his ear, "Dustfall!" He jerked his head up, sputtering with surprise. "Wh ... wh-what are you doing?.." Tinyfeather laughed. "Good morning, sleepyhead! Come on, I want to talk to you before Ashenclaw assigns us to a patrol." "Why? About what?" the tom asked groggily, getting to his paws. "Can't tell you yet. It's a surprise!" Tinyfeather mewed as she leapt out of the den, Dustfall close behind her, and began to lead him out of the camp. "Wait, why are we leaving? Can't you ask me in the camp?" The she-cat only shook her head, a wide grin on her face. Now this got Dustfall thinking. Was she really ... going to ask him that question? His heart pounded loudly in his chest. Finally Tinyfeather stopped at the edge of the forest where the meadow began. The fields were full of vibrant flowers. "Isn't it so pretty?" Tinyfeather sighed. Dustfall thought a moment. "Not as pretty as you," he murmured, surprising himself that he was actually able to get it out. She turned her head toward him, her eyes wide. They both were silent before she whispered, "Dustfall?" "Yes?" he whispered back. The two of them held their breath. "Will you be my mate?" her voice quavered, but she said it. Dustfall's face lit up, and he leaned forward to lick her cheek. "Of course I will."

"Hey Stormbreeze, do you know where Dustfall and Tinyfeather are?" Ashenclaw asked, annoyed that he couldn't find the two warriors. "I think I saw them leave camp. I don't know what they're doing, though." The deputy let out a frustrated sigh. "Alright then," he muttered. "I just sent out the hunting patrol, so do you want to help me look for the kittypet I spotted yesterday?" "Sure!" Stormbreeze meowed, always up for an adventure of any sort. He wondered if the kittypet was one of the hostile ones or one of the soft ones as they trotted out of the camp. Ashenclaw, however, was ticked off that he had caught sent of the kittypet. He had been wanting to see Sheepclaw, but instead had had to report back to camp. He could only hope to spot her at the border today and be able to send Stormbreeze back with the kittypet.

"Honeydapple?" Emberstar called, poking her head out of the nursery, too afraid to actually leave her kits alone with Frigidrose. The light ginger tabby came trotting over, a smile on her face. "Yes? What can I do for you?" "I was hoping you wouldn't mind watching my kits while I'm at the Moonpool. I've been needing to stretch my legs for a while, plus it's time a pay StarClan a visit again." Honeydapple nodded eagerly, happy to be taking care of kits again. She quickly padded into the nursery as the leader left, and she was suddenly reminded of the hostile Frigidrose inside. Upon seeing her, the silver tabby queen let out a soft hiss as she swiftly led her kits out of the den. "Mama? Why are we leaving the nursery?" Cinderkit mewed quietly. "Because I say so." Breezekit was quite puzzled at this. Her mother had not let them even mention leaving the nursery since Shadekit's death, and now she was taking them outside herself just because she didn't like Honeydapple? Breezekit couldn't help but think how spiteful Frigidrose was.

Willowcloud had just left the medicine den to speak with Emberstar when she spotted her heading out of camp. She bounded to catch up with her. "Emberstar!" The leader turned around, a smile appearing on her face at the sight of her friend. "Willowcloud, how are you doing?" The medicine cat returned the smile. "Just fine, thank you. I was wanting to speak with you for just a moment - about Applepaw." Emberstar nodded. "Of course. Is everything alright?" "Yes, yes! He has learned so much and he just keeps getting older and older - I thought it would be good to give him his full name now. Are you okay with that?" The leader chuckled. "Yes, Willowcloud, that's fantastic. He will be happy, I'm sure." Willowcloud's grin grew wider. "Oh, thank you! He certainly will be!" With a flick of her tail as farewell, she trotted back to her den.

The leader stepped into the cave, making her way to the water's edge and crouching before it, lapping at the cool water. "Hello, StarClan," she began, murmuring softly, "Hello Shadekit," before continuing. "I have come to you today to ask for another cat to join LeafClan. Ever since we lost our little Shadekit, nothing has been the same. It seems almost no one can see the flowers beginning to bloom, but only a bleak, dismal sky with the coming rains. Please send a queen so that her kits might help to put smiles on the faces of my Clan-mates." Little did she know that another she-cat would soon be expecting kits.

As the kittypet, renamed Snowstep by Emberstar, began her kitting, Cinderkit was getting anxious. "Mama, I don't want to be in here," he whimpered. Frigidrose sighed, getting to her paws. "Alright." Breezekit scoffed as she led them out of the nursery, "Are you serious, Cinderkit? Grow up." Her brother looked hurt, mewing quietly, "We're just kits...." "If we're going to be warriors someday, you need to grow up." Frigidrose smiled at her daughter's attitude. Oh, yes.... She'll be a fine, fine warrior someday. It was just then that Emberstar leaped onto the Highrock and called a Clan meeting. The silver tabby queen knew that it was time for her kits to be apprenticed and could hardly wait to see who their mentors would be. "Breezekit and Cinderkit, please step forward," the leader meowed. Breezekit, calm and collected, padded toward the base of the rock while Cinderkit shakily followed behind her. Frigidrose noticed Frostpath sitting a couple fox-lengths away and made her way to the young warrior. "Hello, Frostpath," she purred, sitting down beside her. The white she-cat gave a small smile, but the queen could tell something was wrong. "Are you alright?" she asked gently, curling her tail around the young warrior. Frostpath let out a heavy, troubled sigh, "Frigidrose ... I don't know what to do. Ashenclaw, he - he ..." she suddenly trailed off, shocked that she was actually revealing this to a Clan-mate. "What is it?" the queen prompted. Frostpath hesitated for a moment, unsure whether or not to finish. Well, she thought, growing angry with her former mentor again, if he is going to eventually become mates with that she-cat, the Clan must know. Her decision made and her heart cold, she continued, growling quietly, "He's meeting an AsterClan she-cat." Frigidrose was a bit speechless. The deputy.... He couldn't possibly be.... But then she smiled. She would manipulate Frostpath, twist her mind so that she would join her on her quest for revenge. It would be easy, really, seeing as how upset the younger cat was. She was so insecure and already so full of anger. It would be quick, that was for sure. The queen gave her a sympathetic look, mouthing, "We will talk later," before turning her attention to the ceremony.

"Hi there!" Heatherkit mewed to her new den-mates - well, they would be for a few days at least. Her mother had told her that she would be making them apprentices any time now. The she-kit couldn't wait for her training to start and couldn't stop wondering who her mentor would be. "Hi..." Brightkit responded in her quiet voice. Snowstep purred at the sight of Heatherkit. Even though she had only been residing in LeafClan for a little while yet, she had already grown to love the leader's kits. They were kind and helpful, happy to talk and play with her kits even though they were six moons younger. "Hello, Heatherkit," the queen meowed, smiling. "What are you up to this morning?" "Well," she began, "I was wondering if they would like to play?" She flicked her tail towards Snowstep's kits. "Certainly no roughhousing, just batting around a moss ball. Is that okay?" Upon hearing that, Russetkit leapt away from her mother and toward Heatherkit, squealing happily, "Yes, of course, that's okay! Right, mom?" Then she tried to deepen her voice a bit to imitate Snowstep's, "Yes, yes, that's fine. Yay!" she mewed, returning to her own, natural voice. "Come on, guys! Wake up!" The little ginger kit began to prod her siblings, nipping lightly at their ears in an attempt to wake them. "I'm already awake, Russetkit," Brightkit whimpered, hurrying over to Heatherkit's side. "Russetkit! Stop! We're awake, we're awake," snapped Dewkit, jumping to his paws, his fur beginning to bristle. "Oh come on, I'm not that bad," their mischievous sister mewed with a grin spreading across her maw. Otterkit chuckled, "Alright, well let's go then." Heatherkit smiled, turning to lead the four younger kits across the nursery to where her brothers were waiting.

Emberstar left the camp after all the patrols were sent out and the apprentices went off to train. She watched Breezepaw and Cinderpaw for a moment as they padded away with their mentors, hoping she had chosen the right cats to keep them from turning as hostile toward the rest of the Clan as their mother. She wasn't too worried about Cinderpaw, but it was Breezepaw who concerned her. Clearing her thoughts, the leader continued out of the camp in the direction of the Moonpool. With these issues involving Frigidrose and her kits, she was going to need some advice on how to deal with them. She hoped that StarClan would send her a wise elder.

Tinyfeather lay at the nursery entrance, watching as patrols left and returned. She sighed, upset that Willowcloud had told her to stay in the nursery until her kits came. Of course it was probably for the best that she wasn't up and about like before, but she was growing restless. The kits will be worth it... she told herself. Hopefully things would be better once they were here. She moved to get up to grab something to eat, but a sudden sharp pain stopped her. She lay back down, wincing. "I'll get Willowcloud," Snowstep asssured her, padding quickly out of the nursery. The two medicine cats hurried over, Appleheart bringing the necessary herbs while Willowcloud and Snowstep helped Tinyfeather back to her nest.

Frigidrose woke that morning with a plan. She needed to get a move on with avenging her lost daughter, but she knew if anything horrible happened to one of her Clan-mates, she would instantly be suspected of the crime. She needed to convince Emberstar to trust her. It might take a few moons, yes, but the silver tabby knew just how to go about it. After she got to her paws, she gave Frostpath a light prod in the shoulder. "What?" the white warrior grumbled. "Come with me. I have an idea." Frostpath let out a heavy sigh, "Right now?" "Yes, right now," Frigidrose snapped. "Come on." The two she-cats quietly stepped out of the den. The sun was just barely up. "Can I ask why you need to talk at this wonderfully convenient time of the morning?" Frigidrose's eyes narrowed. "I told you - I have a plan," she meowed, emphasising the last four words. Frostpath stared at her a moment, afraid of what she thought the other was speaking of. Willing her voice not to shake, she asked, "What plan?" Frigidrose smirked. "You and I are going out on a patrol. I will be asking Featherpaw to accompany us -" "Why Featherpaw?" Frostpath interrupted. "She's never done anything to us...." The silver tabby simply purred, "Oh yes, Frostpath. It will be less suspicious then." Frostpath felt her eyes growing wide. They were going to ... murder Featherpaw? The sweet, lovable, innocent apprentice? "Now Frostpath," Frigidrose was mewing, "Don't do anything, don't say anything. I will take care of it all." "Well you two are up early, aren't you?" Ashenclaw. Frostpath whirled around frantically while Frigidrose calmly turned to face the deputy. "Ah, good morning, Ashenclaw. I was just hoping to lead the dawn patrol today - would that be alright?" she meowed smoothly. Ashenclaw nodded. "Sure thing. Finally, someone who wants to help out with patrols. You're welcome to choose whoever you want to go with you." The silver tabby smiled. "Thank you, Ashenclaw." She then turned to pad toward the apprentices' den, signaling with her tail for Frostpath to follow. The white warrior did so, but uneasily. This was wrong. This was really, really wrong. Before they could reach the den, Featherpaw skipped out, a huge smile plastered onto her face. At the sight of the two warriors approaching, she chirped, "Oh, hi there! Good morning!" The reason for her sheer happiness was that she was hoping last night would be the last time she had to sleep with the apprentices. Patchthorn had mentioned to her how she was ready to be a warrior and he was going to talk to Emberstar about it very soon. The fluffy white she-cat couldn't wait. "Good morning, Featherpaw," Frigidrose purred. "Frostpath and I were just about to leave on the dawn patrol. Would you like to join us?" Featherpaw nodded eagerly. "Sure! I'm all done with my training, so I don't think Patchthorn will miss me." "Wonderful." That one word from Frigidrose sent a chill down Frostpath's spine. She seemed unable to think or comprehend anything as they made their way out of the camp. Suddenly she recognized where they were headed: the ravine. It wasn't too far away. All the apprentices had been warned about the ravine because of it's sheer drop where one could fall to their death if they weren't watching where they were going. The numb feeling swarmed Frostpath's nerves once again as they approached the area. Featherpaw, stopping in her tracks, also realized the direction in which the patrol was going. "Careful, the ravine's just a few fox-lengths away," she mewed nervously. "Oh, it's fine, sweetheart," Frigidrose assured her. "We won't let you get hurt." She gently nudged the apprentice forward. "Don't you want a look at it?" Featherpaw hesitated ... then slowly stepped forward. No, Frostpath thought, no, Featherpaw, don't do it. Please.... She was too scared to speak. Frigidrose had told her to keep quiet, and only StarClan knows what she might do to her if she spoke up. Frostpath only gulped as the apprentice inched closer to the edge. "That's it, just a few more steps," the silver tabby coaxed. "I won't let you fall, I promise." A bit more confident after hearing those words, Featherpaw quickened her pace just the slightest, and was soon staring down at the bottom of the ravine. Before she could step away, Frigidrose gave her a sharp push, sending her falling down to the rocky ground below. The apprentice let out a shriek just before she hit the hard, rock-littered surface with her head, and her body continued to tumble for another couple fox-lengths. Frostpath stood frozen, eyes scrunched shut as she tried to block out the sound of Featherpaw's scream. Such a blood-curdling cry was going to haunt her forever. Finally she dared to step forward to the edge of the ravine. Featherpaw lay in a crumpled heap, her beautiful snowy pelt stained with blood, and her side no longer rising and falling with her breaths. The warrior was speechless - what could she say after having let such a terrible event take place? A shaky sob forced its way out of her. "Now, now, Frostpath," Frigidrose mewed almost in an annoyed manner. "We need to bring the body back to camp. We will tell everyone that she slipped and fell into the ravine, understand? Act as innocent as you possibly can. Do you hear me?" Frostpath could only nod for she didn't trust her voice at that moment. Her companion sighed loudly. "Come on, get your act together. We can't show up with you looking like this." They carefully descended into the ravine, Frostpath grabbing hold of Featherpaw's scruff and dragging her behind Frigidrose toward where the ravine wasn't so deep. The older she-cat scrambled up the side and reached down to take Featherpaw from Frostpath as the younger tried to push the body up to her. They were soon back out of the ravine, Frostpath again dragging the apprentice's body. Frigidrose ran ahead of her into the camp, calling out, "Emberstar! It's Featherpaw!" The leader, who had been speaking to Ashenclaw, turned to her, a concerned look growing on her face. "What's wrong?" she meowed as she hurried over. "We were on patrol and passing by the ravine. She was bouncing around, carefree, being her usual Featherpaw self when she slipped and fell into it. She hit her head hard, and..." Frigidrose paused, allowing herself a small sniffle, "...she's gone. I did all I could, I swear. It was just - it was too late." Emberstar stared blankly at her for a moment before they noticed Frostpath bringing the apprentice's body into the camp. The white warrior stopped in the middle of the clearing, letting go of Featherpaw's scruff and quickly bounding out of the camp. Frigidrose scrambled for an explanation for this behavior, "F-Frostpath's certainly devastated.... The poor thing." She glanced out the camp entrance after the younger warrior, fire in her eyes. She had told Frostpath to act 'normal,' not go running away from the situation. She hoped desperately that Emberstar wouldn't suspect them. The leader, however, had no words. She slowly padded toward Featherpaw's body, staring at her for a moment before sinking to her paws and burying her nose in the long, soft fur. "What?!" came Breezepaw's cry of disbelief. She came bounding over to where her friend's body lay, her eyes wide. Then she looked up, straight at her mother. Frigidrose gave her a hard stare, warning her not to say anything else. Breezepaw responded with a cold glare. With a slight sigh, the warrior beckoned for her kit to follow her out of the camp. Once they were out of earshot, Breezepaw began to yell at her, "Why? Why?! Why did you do that? - how could you have done such a despicable thing as murder an innocent apprentice? All she's ever done is love and care for everyone, and then you go and end her life?!" Frigidrose waited patiently for her daughter to finish before meowing calmly, "It needed to happen -" "What? No! Are you kidding me? Do tell - why did Featherpaw, of all cats, have to die?" "Because I need to convince Emberstar trust me - to trust us. If there is a murder and I can get her to believe that I am completely innocent, she will start to stop suspecting us of everything that goes wrong in the Clan. Do you understand me?" Breezepaw's fur was bristling, her lips drawn back in a snarl. "I can't believe you! Why do we have to live with lies like these? Why are you putting this horrible burden on myself and my brother?" "Don't you remember," Frigidrose growled. "the day Shadekit died? It was all Falconpaw's fault - and Emberstar's for raising him to be so reckless. She cannot lead LeafClan any longer. Such a mother could in no way make an ideal leader. We need to get rid of her." Then her tone darkened even more so, "Or have you forgotten your dearest sister? Do you no longer care about her at all?" Breezepaw gasped. Did her mother really think she could have forgotten Shadekit? The day they lost her, Breezepaw had been absolutely devastated. She wouldn't speak for days. How could she possibly have forgotten her? She lowered her head, a single tear escaping her eye. "I-I'm sorry," she whimpered feebly. "You better be. Now, you must keep that mouth of yours shut. Am I clear?" Breezepaw nodded.

Falconpaw paced around the camp. He hated all this rain - they could hardly do anything with the floods coming. The young tom certainly didn't like being cooped up in the camp, but neither did anyone else. Deciding he might as well try to get out, he approached his mentor. "Frostpath? Can we train, please?" The white warrior frowned, muttering, "No. Can't you see it's raining, mouse-brain?" Falconpaw continued to plead, mewing, "But it would be good to learn how to fight in the rain, right?" Frostpath only sighed. "You can find something else to do. Go play with your siblings." The she-cat turned away from him, stalking off toward the warriors' den. "Well, someone's grumpy," the apprentice grumbled to himself. He lay down right there, his chin resting on his paws while he watched the rain continue to trickle out of the sky. Things had been quite gloomy in LeafClan already without the rain and floods to add to it. Featherpaw's accident and the battle had really taken a toll on everyone. Falconpaw couldn't help but think of how the cheery older apprentice would have found some way to make such a dreary day fun. "Hey," mewed his sister as she padded up to him. "What do you want?" he mumbled. "I was just thinking that since our mentors don't want to take us outside, we could go by ourselves!" Heatherpaw suggested with a mischievous smile, being careful to whisper. Pinepaw trotted over, already quite aware of his sister's plan. "We're going to get in loads of trouble, you know." "No, we're not," she assured him. "If we're only out for a little bit, then we'll be fine. What do you say, Falconpaw?" The tabby tom quickly got to his paws, a smile growing on his maw. "Let's go!" "Guys..." Pinepaw pleaded. "Oh come on, don't be a stick-in-the-mud," Falconpaw meowed, already hurrying off with Heatherpaw. Their brother sighed, shaking his head before hesitantly bounding after them.

Frostpath stepped into the warriors' den with her head down and tail drooping. This gloomy day wasn't helping with her inner conflict at all. Settling down on her nest, she decided that she would try to sleep the day away. That was probably the only way to keep her mind off ... things. She was about to lay her head down when she noticed another figure in the den, curled up in the corner. In the dark, her eyes could make out the soft ginger tabby pelt of Daisyskip. "You okay?" she queried gently. She knew the younger warrior had been especially upset and even depressed since the battle. The once chipper, sassy she-cat was now despondent and disconsolate. Daisyskip mumbled something inaudible. Frostpath crept closer to her until she was close enough to rest her tail on her friend's side. "It's going to be alright. You can still see," she murmured in an effort to comfort her. A few whimpers escaped the tabby's lips. "You'll be fine, Daisyskip. I promise." Frostpath was a bit surprised at how soft her voice was as it left her. She had realized that lately she had been rather irritable and her voice snappy. The white warrior frowned at the thought, dismissing it. Her tone was only like that because of what happened with Featherpaw. She was fine, she wasn't snarky or anything like that, she thought. "But ... but it will never be the same...." Daisyskip whispered, her voice shaky as tears sprang to her eyes. "Daisy -" "Look at me," she whimpered, turning to face Frostpath. Claw marks scarred the place where her right eye had been, and the whole area around it was swollen. It was slowly healing after several visits to the medicine cats, but it was a dreadful sight. "Nobody is going to want me. I won't be able to find anyone to talk to at Gatherings anymore, and - and I won't even find a mate, and -" Frostpath interrupted her, "Whoa, okay, that isn't going to happen," she meowed firmly, holding eye contact with the other she-cat. "Daisy, of course you won't be left alone. Your mother loves you, your brothers love you, we all love you, and you most certainly will find a mate. Trust me." She offered the tabby a small smile and the corners of Daisyskip's lips began to lift as well. She began to nod slowly. "Thank you, Frostpath." The white warrior licked her forehead as a 'you're welcome' and returned to her own nest for her nap. Maybe she wasn't so terrible of a cat after all.... Just because she had joined in on Frigidrose's plotting once didn't mean she was like her ... right?

Emberstar sat at the entrance of her den, gazing around the camp. Almost everyone was just walking around, bored. Usually there would be patrols coming and going, but now nothing. She could see the restlessness on their faces. When the rain had begun to lighten for a little while, she approached her deputy. "Perhaps it would be good to send a patrol or two out now that it isn't pouring so heavily?" she asked. Ashenclaw nodded. "Yes, yes, that's a good idea. I'll go round up some cats." He was about to pad away when he turned back to the leader. "Do you want to come?" The brown tabby shook her head, meowing, "No, I think I'll be visiting the Moonpool." "Okay then. Sounds good," the deputy then proceeded to call the names of the cats to accompany him. As Emberstar began to pad out of the camp, Webfang bounded up to her. "Hey, have you seen the kits?" he asked quickly. The leader furrowed her brow. "This morning, yes.... Is something wrong?" Panic started to rise inside her. With Featherpaw's accident having happened so recently, she was especially nervous whenever the apprentices went outside. "Oh, okay. I don't think so," her mate said. "They're probably just off on another of their adventures," he added with a chuckle. "Dear StarClan - Webfang, please go look for them. We can't risk another cat having an accident," her voice was shaky, frantic with worry. What if something happened to them...? "I'm sure they're fine, but of course I'll go look for them," Webfang reassured her, licking her cheek. He left her to her journey to the Moonpool, anxious to get back as soon as she could.

"Do you think it's possible to go herb hunting today?" Appleheart queried. Willowcloud thought a moment before shrugging. "I'm not sure. It will certainly be harder to find them by scent only since the rains will have dampened their smell. It wouldn't hurt to try." The ginger tom nodded slowly. "Alright. I'll go see what I can find," he mewed before stepping out of the den. Willowcloud quietly continued with her herb sorting, leaving the den to see Sunstripe when she was finished. She grabbed some ragwort leaves to bring with her. Knowing of their elder's already aching joints, she knew that with all this humidity around it would be best to give him the herb. She had also been trying to spend some of her spare time with him since he had no one else residing in his den with him. "Hello, Sunstripe," she greeted him. "How are you feeling?" The elder shrugged. "I'm doing fine, I guess," he mewed, glancing at the herb she had brought with her. "If that's something for my joints, then thank you very much." Willowcloud chuckled. "Yes, it is, and you're welcome." She pushed the leaves toward him and told him to eat them, which he did. After a moment, he inquired, "Where's Appleheart gone off to?" "Oh, just looking for herbs. With the storm, we'll be lucky if he finds anything. I hope this weather doesn't last much longer."

"How was the Gathering?" Cloudtalon queried excitedly, trotting up to the returning group of cats. "It was great! - as always," Briardusk happily mewed. She loved the Gatherings. Even though this one hadn't been quite so interesting and LotusClan didn't make an appearance, she had met someone new. Cloudtalon smiled at her pleasure over the Gathering. "That's good. Maybe I could go with you next time." The red tabby nodded eagerly, "Yes! You would have so much fun! We could go meet a ton of other cats together and it'd be great!" Cloudtalon felt his face heating up as she spoke the word 'together.' He felt he could hardly breathe. Did she really just say that?.. In truth, he had been harboring a bit of a crush on her for a while, but after so long it seemed nothing would come of it. Maybe he would be wrong - maybe she liked him back! He was indeed wrong, however, but the poor tom had no idea. He had no idea of how she felt about Bumbletuft, the LotusClan medicine cat. The white tom grinned widely and tried not to stutter, "Yeah, that would be fun!" "Would you two just be quiet and go to bed already?" Frostpath grumbled as she headed toward the warriors' den. "No one's going to be able to sleep with all your chitter-chatter." Briardusk sighed, her gaze dropping to her paws. "Sorry, Frostpath..." She and Cloudtalon also began to make their way to the den, and before they entered, Briardusk turned to him with a small smile on her face. "I can't wait till the next Gathering!" The tom found himself smiling back. "Neither can I."

---

"Rise and shine, everyone!" Ashenclaw yowled, startling more than a few cats awake. "Can a cat get no sleep around here?" Frostpath muttered as she exited the den. "Green-leaf's here! No more flooding, so you all better get used to early morning patrols again," the deputy meowed. Daisyskip smiled as she heard her name called for the border patrol. The Gathering had brightened her mood quite a bit and she was beginning to feel like herself again. She was a little nervous however when Ashenclaw also assigned the new warrior Crowstorm to the patrol as well and asked her to show him around the territory. The two walked in silence as they headed out of the camp. When they neared the ravine, the ginger she-cat thought she should warn him about it, "Careful, watch your step. The ravine's right over there, and it's really easy to fall in...." she trailed off when her voice showed signs of cracking. The tom must have noticed. "Are you okay?" he asked quietly. Daisyskip nodded. "Fine. It's just.... We lost an apprentice a few moons ago. She wasn't watching where she was going, and she fell in." "Oh..." the tom murmured. "Well, I can promise you I won't be falling in anytime soon after finally finding a home and friendly cats." "You call Patchthorn and Frostpath friendly?" she laughed, Featherpaw's incident leaving her thoughts. "Okay, I guess not," he chuckled. "But most everyone is friendly. You're really friendly. But also really pretty, so talking to you makes me kinda nervous," he ended with a slight laugh. Daisyskip's breath caught in her throat and she felt her face heating up. He didn't just say that... - he couldn't have, what with her ruined eye and all. She was nearly speechless. "B-but my eye," she sputtered. Crowstorm only smiled. "Oh come on, don't be so hard on yourself - oh, shh... there's a squirrel over there." The black tom pointed with his nose in the direction of the prey. Daisyskip chuckled, "This isn't a hunting patrol, silly." "But it's right there," Crowstorm pleaded. "It'll be quick, I promise!" He actually didn't end up catching the squirrel, for it scurried up a tree as soon as he crept toward it. After that, they finished the patrol quickly and headed back to camp, Daisyskip's stomach full of butterflies the entire time.

Emberstar sat just outside her den as she watched all of the patrols and the apprentices and their mentors leave the camp. It seemed a bit lonely to her with only four warriors about, although she knew it was nothing like when she had first started LeafClan. A smile made its way onto her face at the thought of her first visit to the Moonpool. That gave her an idea - she would pay StarClan a visit today. She had nothing else to do after all. The tabby leader quickly bounded out of the camp in the direction of the Moonpool. It was a beautiful day - the sun was out, the sky was bright blue, the flooding had ended. She stepped quickly onto the cool stone floor of the Moonpool and sat at the pool's edge before lapping up the water

---

The leader woke the next morning at the side of the pool. She blinked slowly to clear her vision before getting to her paws and leaving the Moonpool. The sun was just barely up. Camp was almost within sight when she scented something. Pausing to get a better whiff of the air, Emberstar quickly recognized the scent. Fox. And there it was, lurking around at the edge of the camp, dangerously near the nursery. The tabby's eyes grew wide with horror, and without thinking or even yowling for help, she threw herself at the beast, clinging to its back and sinking her claws into its flesh. The fox let out a high yelp and began trying to shake her off. It partly succeeded, for the leader was just barely hanging onto it with her front claws. She should have let go and run away to divert its attention from the camp, but she didn't. The orange beast whipped its head around and bit her in her hind leg. She howled as pain ripped through her leg. Giving one hard, final shake, the fox flung Emberstar from them, and she collided with a tree. Her vision was growing dark, but she could still see the fox, snarling, creeping toward her. But then she caught sight of her Clan-mates, rushing to her aid. Relieved that they were there to deal with the creature, she let herself lose consciousness - and a life as well.

The day after the incident with the fox, Emberstar remained in her den, still uneasy from losing one of her lives. Willowcloud and Webfang had been talking with her, trying to calm the distressed leader. It was the Clan's first encounter with a fox and it left them all somewhat frazzled - what if there were more of them living out there somewhere in the forest? With the one they saw having been so close to the camp, everyone was nervous, fearing that there would be a whole group just waiting to attack - however unlikely all the ideas were, the cats fretted over them. With Willowcloud out gathering herbs with Appleheart and Webfang out hunting, Emberstar lay in her den in solitude. She knew it was best to get a move on for staying in there all day would certainly make her out to be a cowardly, fragile leader, but she couldn't force herself to leave. The spotted tabby was close to falling asleep again when a voice sounded just outside her den, causing her head to lift and her ears to perk up with curiosity. "Yes?" She couldn't deny her surprise when Frigidrose entered the den. The former queen wore a soft smile as she stepped in and sat before the leader. "Emberstar, how are you feeling?" she inquired, her voice laced with genuine concern. "Everyone's beginning to worry about you." The leader stared at her for a moment before answering, "I'm fine. Really, thank you." She tried but couldn't ignore the question nagging at her and sputtered it out before she knew what happened. "Why are you concerned about my well-being?" Frigidrose's eyes showed a flash of slight surprise at her query before returning to their soft expression, and Emberstar quickly added, "I mean - the Clan knows you, erm... dislike me because of what happened to Shadekit...." she trailed off uncertainly, her gaze towards her paws, and she prepared for the irate screaming that was sure to come from the warrior at the mention of her lost daughter. "Oh, Emberstar..." Frigidrose spoke softly, calmly even. The leader almost flinched at the unexpected reaction. "I was simply a mother consumed by grief for her kit and I had overreacted immensely. I wish to ask your forgiveness, for I believe we could be... friends." Her pale green eyes stared into the other's dark emerald ones. Emberstar could hardly believe what she was hearing. Memories of that fateful day came rushing back to her. How could Frigidrose possibly be wanting to be her friend? At first the leader wasn't sure if it was some trick, but the genuine amicableness in the warrior's eyes swiftly convinced her. "Of course."

Frostpath anxiously paced around the camp while Frigidrose was speaking with Emberstar. The former queen had told her of her plan to convince the leader to trust her. The white warrior was incredibly nervous about all of this. She knew it would take time for Emberstar to trust Frigidrose, and she wasn't sure if this was going to work. Her thoughts were interrupted by an excited squeal from the nursery. Apparently Russetkit had asked the queens if she, her siblings, and Fernkit could go explore the camp, and they had been given permission to do so.. Frostpath sighed, debating whether or not to hurry off to the warriors' den to hide from the obnoxious kits. Well, not all of them were obnoxious really. Dewkit and Otterkit weren't so bad, it was just Russetkit, Fernkit, and occasionally Brightkit who were the bothersome ones. The warrior was getting to her paws when the five kits raced out of the nursery, Russetkit and Fernkit barreling into her. "Watch it, guys," she muttered as she turned away from them, heading for the warriors' den. The two mumbled a 'sorry' before hurrying on through the camp, whispering excitedly to each other as they took it all in. "Are we really just going to walk around?" Dewkit grumpily asked. "Is that it? I say we go find someone to talk to." Russetkit only laughed. "Oh, Dewkit, no one's gonna want to talk to you with your weird eyes. They're so strange, and it's hard to look you in the eye talk to you because they're so distracting!" she scoffed. To the others she mewed happily, "Come on! - let's go say hi to the new apprentice!" They all scurried off to the elders' den, clearly with no idea of which den was which - all except Dewkit. He stood there, gazing after his den-mates with his jaw hanging open the slightest. Russetkit... she didn't just say that, did she? Frostpath also stopped in her tracks when she heard the taunt. She herself was odd-eyed and what the she-kit said felt like a blow to her just the same as it was to Dewkit. She quickly turned around and carefully stepped toward the young tom. "Dewkit, don't listen to her," she spoke softly, lightly resting her tail on his back to comfort him. The kit was still quiet, still trying to process what happened. Finally words escaped his lips, though almost inaudible. "Am I really...." He paused, trying to gather his thoughts. While doing so, his expression turned from shock and hurt to anger and desolation. "She's right. I don't belong." "Dewkit, stop it! Of course you be -" He cut her off, hissing, "Shut up, Frostpath! You should know very well that we don't belong. We're weird, we're strange, we don't fit in. We'll never fit in." Abruptly he turned away and darted back into the nursery. Frostpath was speechless. She nearly jumped when Frigidrose suddenly appeared beside her. The white warrior let out a sigh, "How'd it go?" The silver tabby allowed herself a small smile, replying, "Well. But what I'm most intrigued with at the moment is the matter with Dewkit. What happened?" Frostpath turned her gaze to the ground, shaking her head. Quietly as to not draw attention to themselves even with most of the Clan out of the camp, she answered, "Russetkit taunted him about his eyes. I tried to comfort him, but.... he's too hurt, and I completely understand, but he's really overreacting." "Don't try to comfort him anymore." Frostpath looked up at the other, clearly puzzled. "What do you mean..?" Frigidrose smiled. "Exactly what I said. Don't comfort him anymore. A spark has ignited within him. The spark of anger, of rage, of hate. We must nurture it, allow it to grow until it consumes him. From the looks of what I saw, he could be... useful."

Willowcloud was sorting her herbs when the border patrol returned. She paid no attention to it, assuming things had just gone as normal, but that was before several of the cats began to frantically call her name. Bewildered, she hurried out of her den, and her jaw dropped open with shock at the sight of this poor tortoiseshell who looked as if she might join StarClan in their ranks at any moment. The cat had barely been able to walk even with help from Patchthorn and Foxpounce, and once they made it into the camp, she collapsed, panting heavily. "Appleheart, get me goldenrod and cobwebs, quickly!" she called as she raced over to the badly injured cat. A pool of blood was already beginning to form around the tortoiseshell, and Willowcloud frantically worked to save her life. When she was nearly finished spreading the goldenrod poultice across the wounds, the hunting patrol returned. "Willowcloud, Appleheart! Webfang's injured!" shouted Birchwing. "Great StarClan," the medicine cat breathed as a heavy, frustrated sigh escaped her. "I'll take care of Webfang," Appleheart meowed before leaving her side to grab some herbs from their den and attend to the warrior. Willowcloud breathed a sigh of relief when the tortoiseshell's condition was finally stable. "What's your name?" Emberstar inquired of her. After a moment of collecting her thoughts, the loner mewed quietly, "Adder. Would you mind if I join you? I've heard of these Clans and I've been looking for one for some time now...." The leader nodded slowly. "I don't mind at all. Adder, from this point on you will be known as -" "I will be known as Adder, thank you," she interrupted with a tinge of irritation evident in her voice. Emberstar looked a bit surprised, but quickly nodded in understanding. "Of course."

"Ivypaw, do you have to go?" Russetkit whined, clinging onto the apprentice's leg. Ivypaw laughed. "Yes, silly, training is important." The ginger tabby then put on a pout as she let go of her leg, mumbling, "Aw, alright. But show me whatever you learn, okay?" "Of course, Russetkit," the tortoiseshell tabby mewed with a grin before bounding off after her mentor Foxpounce. In the one moon that she had been a member of LeafClan, she had become best friends with naughty little Russetkit. The kit referred to her as her 'partner in crime,' and the two could usually be found hiding burrs in the warriors' nests or trying to sneak out of camp on their own. While Russetkit was carefree and adventurous, Ivypaw was practical and certainly more mature; she knew when they could go off and play and when it was time to be serious. She always kept Russetkit in check - something Snowstep, and the rest of the Clan for that matter, was very grateful for. "You ready for your first training session?" Foxpounce asked with a smile, interrupting Ivypaw's thoughts. His apprentice smiled back, mewing excitedly, "Of course!" In truth, she was nervous about training with the other apprentices - as Foxpounce had already told her they would all be coming as well - since they were so much older than her. She felt a little intimidated, but that wasn't going to stop her from having fun.

"Daisyskip, would you mind leading the border patrol today?" Ashenclaw called. The young warrior's ears perked up at the question with a bit of surprise. "U-um, yeah, s-sure," she stuttered, forcing a smile onto her face. After the battle and her eye was ruined, she hadn't been very confident in anything she did, and was incredibly nervous about leading a patrol. She was getting better, but she still wasn't fully her normal, bold self yet. "Great! I want you to take Patchthorn, Dustfall, Frostpath, Cloudtalon, and Frigidrose with you. Alright?" She nodded. "Okay." The pale ginger tabby was just about to pad off to look for the other warriors when she heard her brother Birchwing, who was beside her, mumble, "Wow, finally you and Crowstorm won't be on the same patrol together. Was starting to get annoying." Daisyskip quickly turned her head around, giving her brother a puzzled stare. "Excuse me..?" Birchwing sighed, "Oh, don't act like that, Daisy. The whole Clan knows you two are smitten with each other." His sister's eyes widened. "Wh-what? What do you mean?" she breathed. The whole Clan knew? She couldn't tell if her brother was just teasing her or not. Birchwing allowed himself a small smile, the smile one wears when they know something another doesn't. "Oh, yes, yes. It's obvious." Foxpounce, hearing bits of the conversation, decided to chime in, "Yep, everyone's betting you're going to be mates within the next few moons." Daisyskip felt her face heating up and was surprised that it wasn't glowing red. She glared at her brothers, which resulted in their whiskers twitching with amusement. "Alright, you two, I bet that's enough." Daisyskip breathed a sigh of relief and sent a silent prayer of thanks to StarClan for her mother's intervention. Giggling amongst themselves, Birchwing and Foxpounce relented and left the scene to join Ashenclaw's hunting patrol. "Thank you," Daisyskip murmured. "Ah, you're welcome, sweetie," Honeydapple purred, licking her daughter's forehead. The young warrior hesitated before asking quietly, "What they said - is it true? Does the whole Clan know..?" Honeydapple gave a small smile. "Somewhat, yes.... I know the queens gossip about it and your brothers have been suggesting it to the other warriors. They don't talk about it a lot, though, I promise. It's just mixed in with the usual gossip." Daisyskip nodded slowly, sighing a bit. "Alright, I thought as much...." "Hey," Honeydapple nudged her with a paw. "Don't be upset about it, okay? I'm glad you've found someone. I told you you would," she added with a smile. "Now I need to hurry off to catch that hunting patrol. I'll see you later. Bye, sweetheart." She gave Daisyskip's forehead one last lick before bounding off after the patrol. "Bye, mom," the young she-cat mewed quietly with a smile.

"We're going to be apprentices today! We're going to be apprentices today!" Russetkit squealed with excitement. Dewkit rolled his eyes with annoyance. "I don't believe Emberstar should make you an apprentice - you still act like a kit," he muttered. "Well, duh, I still act like a kit because I'm still one right now," she retorted, sticking her tongue out at him. "Hey, hey, calm down," Snowstep ordered. "I told you this morning - today's a special day, and so today you were going to behave. Correct?" Russetkit let out a loud sigh, "Yes, mama, I remember." "Good. Now get your pelts cleaned, I don't want you looking like a bunch of disheveled rogues at your ceremony." Otterkit, always one to follow orders and obey rules, immediately set to work on his pelt, and Dewkit and Brightkit followed suit. Russetkit wanted no part in such a 'boring task,' however. "But mama, I don't wanna clean my pelt, it looks fine," she whined. "Russetkit, if you want to become an apprentice, you will clean your fur." The she-kit grumbled but did begin to groom herself. Snowstep sighed with relief. At Tinyfeather's muffled chuckling, she meowed, "It'll be your turn next moon." The older queen giggled, "But I only have one kit to deal with, you have four." Fernkit chimed in, smiling broadly, "Yeah, I'm going to be good and clean my fur so it's nice and pretty for my ceremony!" Snowstep laughed, wishing her kits had the same idea.
