Yes, you're overpaying, as their cub is a 2016 store pet, and its only worth about a late '10 rare.
Also, their cub is only a rare, not a very rare like most other store pets, therefore, it may only be worth one rare from the same year or two, I'm not sure how those store pets work.

A completely unfair trade :). Both the pets are all within the 3 month rule within each other. Also 2 '09 rares equals 1 '09 VR.
