It was cold. People were everywhere. No one stopped
to help. No one wanted to help the strange foreign
little girl curled up in a ball in a box on the street.
She shivered, not only because of the cold air, but
because of what she had just been through. Who
she'd escaped from. It was horrible. Back in her home
country, in Australia, she was eating out with her
parents at a restaurant. She'd gone to go to the
bathroom, but on her way there, someone grabbed
her by her hair and clapped a paw over her mouth.
The person whispered in her ear, "Stay quiet, and I
won't hurt you."

Five-year-old Angel nodded, and he slowly took his
paw away. Placing a hand on her back, he led her
out of the restaurant. No one suspected a thing. No
one noticed what was happening. He told her to
get in the car. Too scared to resist, she nodded her
head and got into the backseat. There was another
girl inside the car next to her, looking to be in her
early teens. The poor girl was scared out of her wits,
and had a gag tied around her mouth. She squirmed
in the seat, but to no avail. Soon enough, Angel was
gagged and buckled tightly in the seat. What was
happening? Why had this man taken her from the
restaurant? And...when were they going back?

They weren't.

Angel realized this after about half an hour of
driving. The man wasn't going to take them back.
The man in the passenger's seat beside him was no
help either. They talked in low voices that she
couldn't hear. Every now and then, she would look
at the girl beside her. There was a glazed over look
in her eyes as she stared out the tinted window,
like she had zoned out completely. It was a long
time before they reached their destination, but
eventually they came to an old warehouse on the
outskirts of the city. It was late in the afternoon,
and the sun was beginning to set. They pulled up to
the outside of the metal building where another man
was waiting, his paws close together and tail curled
tightly around his body. The driver rolled down the
window, and Angel heard the man outside call him
Henry. Henry addressed the kalon as Will. They both
exchanged a few quiet words, then Will nodded and
walked towards the large warehouse, fiddling with
the lock on the front.

Henry turned to the guy in the passenger seat. "Get
the little one, Lance. And hurry. I don't have all
night."

The kalon, Lance, grunted and got out of the car.
Opening the door, he grabbed Angel roughly by the
shoulders and forced her out of the car. Looking over
her shoulder, she got a quick glance of the girl that
had been sitting beside her. She was struggling as
hard as she could, trying with all her might to squirm
away. "No use, girly," Henry smirked as he pushed her
along towards the warehouse, following Angel and
Lance.

Will had just unlocked the doors and had opened it
just wide enough that they could all squeeze in. The
two girls were led into the dark warehouse, with
nothing but a few flickering lights hanging from the
high ceiling to help them see. Angel glanced around,
quaking with fear. This place gave her the chills.
There were a lot of girls in here, most of them
slumped against the walls looking extremely
unhealthy and food-deprived. Some of them even
seemed to be unconscious. Henry, making sure Will
was guarding the door, released the girl he was
holding and shoved her out of his way. Padding up to
one lying on the floor with her eyes closed, he
slapped her lightly on the face. The girl barely could
open her eyes. Henry sighed irritably. "This one's
nearly dead, Lance. Get her some food, but just
enough to keep her going until tomorrow morning."

Letting go of Angel, Lance disappeared into the
darkness to follow orders. They only gave food to the
weakest girls. Angel and her car buddy weren't one of
them. Then they just left. They left them locked in
the big scary warehouse. No explanation, no promise
of return, nothing. "What're your names?" A strained
voice from behind. Both girls turned to see a kalon
leaning against the wall.

Car Buddy tore off her gag with a look of disgust,
then gently lifted Angel's off. "Don't know about
her, but my name's Kelsie."

"I'm Jenna," the kalon replied, grunting as she
pulled herself up a little straighter. "You?"

"I'm Angel," Angel piped up. "What's happening?
When can I go home?" Both older girls looked at
her sympathetically, although she wasn't sure
why. "What?"

Kelsie hesitated, then bent down to her level.
"I'm sorry, sweet. I...I don't think you'll be
seeing your family again."

This is the story of how I came to New York City.
It's rather difficult for me to reveal, but I know you're
curious. Just don't tell anyone, okay? I only trust a few
people with this, and I'm worried that if other people
find out, they will think differently of me. I'm trusting
you.

Angel frowned. "Why not?"

Jenna and Kelsie exchanged knowing looks. "You'll see," Jenna answered darkly. "Just stick by us and we'll protect you from the bad men, okay?"

Slowly, Angel nodded. They chatted for a little longer until one of the girls called out from the darkness and told them all to shut up. Soon, they were fast asleep.

The next morning, they were all awoken by the loud clanking of the warehouse door opening. "Alright ladies, up and at 'em. We're transporting the better lot of you to a new location." Before they knew it, Angel, Kelsie, Jenna, and many other girls were all led outside the building. They were split into groups of four and put on separate small planes. Luckily, her buddy from the car ride last night, Kelsie, was in her group. But Jenna was led onto another plane.

They never saw her again.

A strange place, very far away. Angel didn't know where it was, but this place had warehouses, too. Soon enough, they were back in yet another horrid metal building, this one a bit smaller. Henry collected a stack of bills from a bearded kalon, then
took his leave. That disgusting man was gone, but this new man was just as bad. And he talked in a funny voice, different then they did back at home.

Angel couldn't remember how long she'd stayed there. A week or two? Maybe more? It was hard to keep track when you couldn't see the sun. Whenever it was, another plane arrived, this time bringing more kalons. They were bringing them all in when Kelsie leaned in towards Angel and whispered in a hurried tone. "I think I can get you out of here."

The little girl stared up at her with wide eyes. "R-really?" A pause to cough. She hadn't eaten in days, and hadn't had a drink since that morning. "You really think?"

Kelsie nodded, then pointed her muzzle towards the door where the guard was standing. "I'll distract him, and when he leaves the door, run. As fast and as far as you can. Don't wait, and don't look back."

The plan seemed all good, but something struck young Angel's heart. "What about you?" She inquired innocently. "Will you come, too?"

"No," the older girl said, giving her a weak smile. "But I'll...I'll be okay here. Don't worry about me, alright? I promise you that I'll be okay."

It didn't seem right, but thoughts of finding her family again flooded Angel's mind, and she agreed. Kelsie nuzzled her fur gently, then walked towards the wall of the warehouse near where the guard was standing. All of the sudden, she started banging her
head and fists against the metal wall, then abruptly started screaming at the top of her lungs. The guard frowned, ignoring it. But as she continued on, he began to grow more and more uncomfortable until finally he huffed and walked over. "Girl's gone nuts,"
he muttered.

Angel didn't waste a single second. As soon as his back was to her, she darted out from behind a crate and made a run for it. She reached the door, ten feet away, fifty, a hundred, two hundred. That's when the shouting started. She charged on ahead, fast as her little legs could carry her. They ached and every step caused her muscles to scream with pain, but she couldn't stop. Kelsie told her not to stop.

She made it as far as she could, escaping into a maze of buildings. The buildings weren't familiar. This place was certainly not near home. She would have to walk very far, indeed. The houses here towered high above her, seemingly stacked on top of each other, and there were dumpsters lining the buildings. The few working streetlights flickered on and off. Desperate to find a hiding place, she jumped on top of some boxes that led to up to the rim of an open dumpster. She gazed down at the trash, then behind her. The evil men could come any second. Closing her eyes, she hopped into the smelly garbage. It'll be okay, that's what Kelsie
had promised. Everything would be okay.

A week later, here she was, wandering the streets with nothing but her own four paws. Sitting in a box. In the cold. Suddenly, a purple head peered around the edge of the box. Their eyes met, and the kalon frowned. "What're you doing in there?" He asked, furrowing his brow.

Angel stared at him. The last time she'd talked to a stranger, she'd been taken from everything she had ever known. But...this boy couldn't be any older then her. Maybe he was okay. "Hiding from the people," Angel said.

"That's silly," he replied, coming into full view.

She frowned. "No it isn't."

"Then come out," he challenged. Angel wasn't one to listen to a bribe, but this boy had already disturbed her peace, so what was the point? "What's your name?" He asked as she stepped cautiously out of the box. "Mine's Emmet."

"Angel," she said, glancing around. Then she noticed it. That funny talk again. "Why do you sound so strange?"

Emmet furrowed his brow. "Why do you sound so strange?" Seeing her expression, he sighed. "We're from different places, silly. I can't tell where you're from, but I know it ain't here." He paused. "Anyway, I'm on my way to
get food, so, see ya around."

He began to walk away, but Angel sprinted after him. "Wait, did you say food? I haven't
eaten in days!"

"Not my problem," the young boy replied.

"But...but I don't know where to get any. And you can't just leave me alone out here."

Emmett stopped in his tracks. "Why not? I'm all alone."

Angel frowned. "You don't have a family?"

"No," he answered shortly. "I don't think so."

"Oh."

They waited in silence for a few moments. "Alright, I'll show you a spot to get some food, but only if you promise not to hog."

The little girl brightened. "Really? Thank you!"

And so it was. Emmett and Angel trotted off into the crowd to find food. They stuck together for a while after that, Emmett telling her about his life and where the best spots were for sleeping and eating around the city. He also told her that she was in a place called New York City. That seemed like a funny name, but she didn't say so. She was just glad to have finally found a friend.

Angel nodded her head to the beat as she tapped heartily on her overturned plastic bucket. Her drumsticks caused the sound to ring out nicely, yet not many people cared to stop and watch. Too busy, they must be. She understood. People had lives. She tapped her foot and bobbed her head up and down as she lifted her eyes to the opposite side of the street. Watching people was quite an interesting experience. They all seemed so stressed, especially in this city. It was always a joy to see a smile on someone's face. Angel loved making people happy. That's part of the reason she played out on the streets, besides the need for money. Music made others happy. If only she wasn't so afraid to accompany herself with her voice.

A whimpering from nearby caused Angel's beat to slow to a stop. Tilting her head and perking her ears, she listened very carefully. Definitely not just a passing car or a kalon speaking into their cell. With a curious expression, Angel stood and picked up her bucket, holding it under her arm. She followed the sound until she spotted a bright blue flash through the crowd, hunched over on the sidewalk. It was a kit. He was crying. "Hey, hey," Angel said soothingly. The kit looked up, eyes filled with fear. "What's wrong, sweet?"

The kid hesitated, then another tear rolled down his face. "I lost my mom and dad."

"Oh, come here," Angel answered with a smile, holding out her free paw.

His lip quivered. "I'm not supposed to talk to strangers. Or go anywhere with them. Mom said that I could get kidnapped."

Angel visibly shuddered at the word. It took all her willpower not to spiral into a whirlwind of the horrible memories. Instead, she bent down into a crouch and looked the kit directly in the eye. "What's your name?"

"D-David. But everybody calls me Day."

She smiled. "Day. That's a beautiful name. It can bring a smile to people's faces, yeah? My name's Angel, and I know exactly how you're feeling right now." Holding out her paw again, she blinked slowly. "Trust me, I can help you find your parents."

Very slowly, Day took Angel's paw and together they stood up. "Wipe those tears. You'll be back with your family in no time." She brushed her fingers across his cheeks, casting aside the tears. Thoughtfully, she added, "What do they look like?"

Day bit his lip. "Mom has wavy blonde hair and brown fur, and dad has fiery fur. It's red and really fluffy. And he wears black glasses!"

Angel nodded. Even with whatever descriptions the child could give, it would be a nightmare trying to find them in this city. They walked for maybe an hour or so, Day giving as much information as he could. They both kept a watchful eye out, scanning the streets and shops for any sign of his parents. It was no use. Any longer and they'd have to contact the police. "We're never gonna find them, are we?" Day asked. They stood on a bridge looking out over the water, people bustling back and forth behind them.

"Of course we will, it just may take a little longer then we thought. But I'm not leaving your side until we do, okay?" Angel ruffled his hair, and he gave a small smile.

They stood in silence for a few more minutes before a frantic voice called from behind. "Day!! Day, is that you?"

Both of them whirled around and through the crowd, Angel spotted a bright red and orange kalon with thick glasses pushing his way past a group of people. A blonde kalon with a beyond worried look on her face was right beside him. She'd been the one who had called. "Mom?" Day said, almost to himself. "Mom! Dad!" Without waiting another second, he sprinted towards his parents and the three united in a family reunion in the middle of the bridge.

After a long hug, the woman pulled away and stared at Angel with a hard yet nervous glare. "Who is this?"

Day beamed up at his mother. "This is Angel! She was helping me look for you."

The father released Day from his grip and padded over to Angel, who was twiddling her drumsticks between her paws. Did they think she had kidnapped him? She would never do such a thing, but his parents didn't know that. Once the father reached her, he stared her hard in the face. After a few long and excruciating moments, he released a sigh and held out a paw for shaking. Angel gripped it with awe. "Thank you," he said sincerely.

"Of course, sir!" Angel replied with awe. "I just wanted to help, I swear. He told me he got lost and I-"

"I believe you because I trust his judgement," the man said, smiling back at his son. "He has a good sense of discernment, and if he says you had good intentions, that's good enough for me."

Angel couldn't help but grin. "I'm just glad he's back safe and sound." She glanced over the father's shoulder toward the mother, and gave her a polite nod. Glancing at her husband, she smiled and nodded back, unable to keep the thankfulness from her face.

It wasn't long after that when the family took their leave. As Angel watched them walk off with their child, tears brimmed in her eyes. If only there had been someone to help her when she had been in a similar situation. If only she could have gotten back to her family, safe and sound. But there was just no way, and she couldn't even remember what her parents looked like anymore, and they probably wouldn't recognize her either. A tear squeezed out of the corner of her eye, and with one last glance, she turned away and started the long walk back to her shared apartment. She would find them one day. No matter what it took, she would find them.

Day to day life is a rather exciting
experience in Angel's opinion. Once you
open that door and walk outside, you
never know what might happen! Now,
that could be a good thing or a bad
thing, but she prefers to look on the
bright side of things. She's been through
a lot, but has come out stronger then
she was before. So she doesn't see the
point in sitting around and pointing
out the negative. Live life while you
still can, and put yourself out there!
Well, actually, she's still working on
that. Like working up the courage to
sing in public, for example, or not
taking other people's rude or harmful
comments to heart. Angel is a kind-
hearted soul, but she takes blows
with some difficulty. However, she
tries her best not to show it and put
a damper on a good mood for others.
If she's hurt, she will find somewhere
private, cry a little, talk herself
through it, and then get back up and
go right at life again. It isn't that she
doesn't appreciate help and caring
from other kalons, especially her
friends. It's just that she doesn't
want them to concern themselves
with her problems. Angel has a
difficult time in general accepting
help. She wants to show the world
that she can do it herself and push
her own limits as far as she can go.
For example, her half of the rent is
her responsibility. If Sydney offers
to pay for her that month, she will
refuse to accept it. If someone
takes their own time to try and
comfort her when she is struggling,
she will put on a smile and pretend
everything is okay. It isn't very healthy
to bury her feelings like that, yes,
but she doesn't want to be a burden.
Besides, everything will turn out
okay in the end, right?

Sydney and Angel are like two peas in a pod. They met one day when Sydney was on her way home from work. The subway was down, so she'd had to walk. It was fate. On her way, she spotted a small crowd gathered around on a spot on the sidewalk. Curious, and not having anything better to do, Sydney made her way over and to the front. It was a street drummer, and boy was she amazing. Her paws moved so fast and her whole body was perfectly coordinated with the beat. She stood there, mesmerized, until Angel stopped. Everyone started to walk away, tossing a few coins into the tin beside her. Sydney didn't have much money, but the young woman was just too amazing to pass up. She tossed a five-dollar bill into the tin and the kalon smiled at her. "You're amazing!" Sydney exclaimed.

The kalon beamed. "Thank you, mam."

She shook her head. "No need for that. I'm Sydney."

The woman took her paw. "Angel."

"You certainly play like one," Sydney said. "Where'd you learn?"

Angel fiddled absently with her drumsticks. "Years of practice. I just like music, really, so one day I picked up a bucket and started playing." Her eyes lit up as she began to explain. "You just move with the beat of the city, and the rhythm will come on it's own. I don't make the sound, the sound uses me to play itself."

They chatted for probably an hour before the dark and cold started to settle in. It was then when Angel briefly mentioned she was homeless. Not directly, of course, but just that she should get back to the warehouse she was sleeping in before it got too dark to see where she was going. Sydney was astonished. This wonderful, friendly, kind, talented kalon didn't even have a place to go home to every night? Unacceptable. She immediately offered for Angel to stay the night with her. At first she refused, but after some convincing, Sydney managed to get her to stay. From there on out, their friendship blossomed until Sydney eventually invited Angel to live with her. Angel said she wouldn't agree to it unless they split the rent. She couldn't live in someone else's house unless she paid the price. Sydney huffily agreed, and they became roommates. And best friends right along beside that.

As for Sydney herself, she works as a personal assistant for a big-shot designer. The salary isn't the best, but it pays the bills. Usually. Because of this job, her work is very fast-paced and she is often stressed out. If not about one thing, then another. However, she loves being able to see all the clothing lines and designs before they hit the shelves, and every now and then her manager sends her home with a little something as a thank you gift.

Image
Emmett and Angel are just as closely knit as her and Sydney, but in a different way. They have known each other ever since they were little kids and he found her cowering in the streets. Despite being nearly the same age, Emmett was her guide to the world. He knew his way around the streets and he knew how to stay alive. Save for the fact that his ways are not always what Angel would call "in the right," he does have a soft spot. He taught her how to take care of herself and do what she wants in life. The world may give you a hard time, but it doesn't matter what anyone else thinks. You just have to push right through it and pave your own path.

Image
Devin is one of Angel's more recently acquired buddies. He came across her while she was drumming in the park and complimented her on her skills...then told her a bunch of ways and places where she can improve. She was glad for the advice, of course, and took it to heart. They got to talking and every now and then they meet up for a coffee to exchange drumming tips. He even surprised her one time with a brand new pair of drumsticks. She's cherished them ever since and was glad she didn't have to use regular sticks or her paws anymore. Even though Devin can be quite opinionated, she appreciates his company nonetheless and is glad to have him as a friend.

Image
Garrett Wilder is a young and aspiring magician. Ever since he was younger, he has had a fascination with the world of magic. Being able to perform it for other people is a joy, and he loves that. Of course, he can't start out famous. Currently, he is performing his small shows on the streets of New York. That's where he and Angel met. Both of them being optimistic and friendly people with a common care for daydreaming, they got along quite well. Sometimes they even combine their acts into a Drumming Rhythmic Magical Spectacular. Although, they should probably come up with a better name for their show.

Hiya again! A little more about me, hm?
Well, I absolutely love singing. But I don't do
it in front of people. I'm not shy, really, just
self-conscious about my voice. I want to get
better before I add that to my drumming. A
voice crack in the middle of an act would be
terrible, don't ya think? Sydney and Garrett
say I sound amazing, but I really don't think
so. Better safe then sorry, I think. I also like
to dance! Dancing is such a joyous activity,
and when I'm on the streets I can't help but
nod my head and tap my feet to the beat I'm
creating. I try to get other people to dance,
too. One time, I actually got a whole crowd
to break down into one big dance party!
That was in Central Park. Sydney was with
me and she started singing while I kept up
the beat. It was sweet as!

Welcome to the show, Angel! Glad to have you here. The interview shouldn't take up too much of your time, so without further ado, here we go. How did you first get into drumming?

Glad to be here, although I'm a little nervous. Well, when I first got to this big smoke -er, city- I was very young. As I got older, I found that I was inclined to music. Whenever I saw someone performing on the streets or even when music floated out from the shops, I had to stop and listen. I even found myself to dance. Music was a wonderful thing, and I wanted to be a part of it. I'd seen some drummers use upturned plastic buckets as a surface, so one day I spent the entire afternoon scouring the dumpsters in an alley for one. I found one and I just...started hitting it. Finding the patterns, getting the right beat, that takes practice. But once ya get the hang of it, it flows as naturally as water from a fall.

Fascinating. Is that what you do for a living?

Yeah, although I'm not sure I'd call it a job. More of a hobby, really. The money is just a plus. It amazes me that people would like my beats enough to leave a little tip as they go by. But to answer your question, yes, that is how I make money. It isn't the best source of income, but it pays the bills. Usually. I just want to make sure I pay my half of the rent, ya know?

Completely understandable. Of course, with your talent it doesn't surprise me that people would stop and watch. Now, let me see here...I heard you can sing.

Well, I don't really-

Have you ever considered pairing your voice with your drumming?

Actually, I'm a little too afraid to do that just yet. My friends tell me I sound wonderful, but I don't know. Maybe someday. It's certainly a possibility. I just have to...get over my...fear.

Ah, of course. Okay, well, just a few more questions. Where did you get your accent?

Somehow, I knew that one was coming. It's Australian. That's where I lived before I was...taken. Over the years, though, it's become muddled with the speech patterns and vocabulary of New York, so it isn't as "pure" as it would be if I'd grew up there.

Speaking of your home, have you ever considered going back?

Of course! Someday, when I earn enough money, I'm going to fly there and find my parents. I don't care how long it takes, but I will find them. Just once, that's all. I just want to meet them once.

I'm terribly sorry what happened did, Angel. I'm sure you will get there one day. In relation to the future, that brings us to our last question. What are your future goals?

My future goals? Well, I'm going to be honest, I don't really have any. Besides finding my parents, I mean. I know that drumming isn't going to get me enough money, so I suppose I'll have to get a job at some point. Believe me, I've tried. It's very difficult without any experience, though. Not to mention I don't even remember my last name. That's a huge turn-away on applications. But yeah, that's all, really.

That about wraps it up, then. It was nice to have you, Angel.

No problem!

See you next time, watchers! And stay snazzy!
