THEIR xxx RELATIONSHIPthe bustle of the markets, the warm squeeze of bodies too close in the thronging mass. the clamor of pots, pans, and armor penetrated the otherwise heavy and musky air. warm and welcome scents wafted into his nose as smoke curled happily into the frigid air. the small green form was a lone island in the surging typhoon around him, simply standing still and silent. observing. golden eyes darted quickly around, moving from fluid form to fluid form. he was all at once terrified of his surroundings due to the constant surprise thrown at him, and yet comfortable with them due to years of experience. a flash of pale pink and suddenly he was on the ground, dust billowing in a cloud and his head spinning in confusion as he saw another small face peep at him anxiously, apologetically. she was familiar.
it had been no easy feat for paws to cleverly sneak from luxurious confines to lowly freedom. royalty had grown mundane with the passing time, and the excitement of adventuring the common style of life has been too tantalizing to deny. her head was swimming with the chaos around her, senses attacked by the strength and volume of everything occurring nearby. it was too much for the head of such a previously pampered child, and she found herself nearly incapable of handling it. nobody paid her any mind -she was a spy in the midst of a gang. a princess in a swarm of peasants. a sliver of glinting silver caught her eye, gleaming against her vision painfully. they had followed, and intended to bring her back to her sheltered home of a castle. unsure of what to do, paws bolted blindly. a flash of green invaded her vision and then she had fallen over something, falling to the dirt ungraciously. she quickly stood and peered down at him. he was a stranger.
--
he grew close to her. he was her mind. it took months for him to discover that she was the princess.
she grew close to him. she was his body. it took months for her to speak her carefully concealed secret.
they became an unlikely a duo. a princess, and a peasant.
--
the years passed. no force in the kingdom could tear the friendship to shreds.
--
kaeru bowed his head. he thought about how the years has flown past, of how they had grown and aged. the sound of brass instruments raised and played skillfully filled his ears with the satisfying buzz of noise. he could feel eyes watching him all around. beside him, behind him, and in front of him. three sets of eyes in front of him. the king. the queen. and her. some were excited. some were enraged. some has called him a role model, someone they should all aspire to be like. others had called him horrible names, attempted to separate him from the only friend he had ever had. "frog," they had taunted him, spitting the word with great distaste. he didn't mind. they would never understand. the princess and him were not lovers, no, their relationship would have only been ruined by such a shallow thing. they were friends - soulmates. and as the crowd roared in a massive swell around him, he spoke lowly but certainly. i will never leave your side."
it was his job to protect her until the day he faded slowly into death's arms.
asuka could feel a conglomerate of emotions mixing and tumbling through her chest. she was glad that he had remained so faithful to her over the years. he was the one she trusted with all of her feelings, stresses, and worries. For once, the attention was not on her, but on the one she had always hoped would recieve the appreciaiton he deserved. her father. her mother. the kingdom. they were all watching him in this instant. him. he was becoming her official guard, her protector for all time. the fact was, however, that he had always been. and would always be. a bubble of pride and happiness burst in her chest, consuming all of her other thoughts. "frog," they had always called him, but would no longer. the frog had grown more important to the princess than any of them ever would. she took a deep breath and a smile crossed her face. she spoke clearly, softly. but surely. "never leave my side."

PERSONALITIESkaeru is very shy, quiet, and bashful. he doesn't really know how to handle himself and his appearance around other people, instead allowing the princess to take control of the situation and relieve himself of the unwanted attention. being more of an introverted type, he has always found it difficult and somewhat unnecessary to make friends. had it not been for the coincidental collision that brought him and the princess together as friends, he probably would have basically no friends at all. however, the friends that he has made he holds to the highest respect and cares deeply for them, and as thus has a very protective nature regarding his friends. he is also a highly cautious individual, and will often make sure that every possible avenue for his actions is accounted for before making a decision. in this manner, he's also very indecisive, as well as a rather noticeable perfectionist.
gentle and quiet, asuka is a fair and loyal ruler. she values her people above all else, even if she hasn't reached the stage of being queen yet. despite still being a princess, asuka enjoys nothing more than helping with chores around the kingdom, and loves visiting the villagers when she can. because of this, asuka has made many friends (although she questions whether some are truly her friends or just her friends due to her royalty - either way, she cherishes and values them all). despite this friendly and cheerful attitude, asuka is very shy in one-on-one conversations and meetings, and the trusty guard she has befriended is the only one that she trusts enough to be vulnerable and less awkward when they're alone. the two are very good friends, and above all, asuka values his friendship the most.

BACKGROUNDSas a child, kaeru lived a difficult but simple life. his parents were some of the poorest in the entire kingdom, and it was a challenge to scrape together enough scraps for a meal. his mother always somehow made it work, and his father did his best by working day in and out. their life was routine and quiet - until kaeru's father fell ill. he did not get better, partially due to the illness itself and partially due to the fact that they could not afford a skilled medical expert. eventually, kaeru's father passed away, leaving kaeru depressed and his mother a mental wreck. his mother could no longer bring herself to care for herself, let alone the child of the man who had withered before her eyes. kaeru was forced to grow mature quickly, and he took it on as his own responsibility to care for not only himself, but for his mother as well. of course, there were times when it was obvious that he still had the mind and manners of a child, but he no longer had much time to play with other kits. he didn't mind it much though, and accepted the weight his deceased father had left in his wake.
far from ordinary, asuka's childhood was quiet and easy. it was early on that she realized the responsibilities she would one day take on, however, and she tried her best to learn what she could from her humble, kind mother. although rather shy as a child, her mother soon taught asuka how to speak with others and, even more important, how to listen to them and hear what they were saying. much of her childhood consisted of helping out with what she could, and although at first a bit reluctant, she soon grew to love it. she was a hard worker, and tried her best at the chores given to her. every once in a while, of course, she could be caught taking an early break and an afternoon nap, hidden underneath a window or table. childhood for asuka held much more responsibility than a normal kits, but as she grew up she found the infinite value in it - she had been trained to be a kind, humble, helpful kalon who would one day he capable of ruling a country.
