An important foreword to note before over-viewing her life is her prime motivator. It is the catalyst for the kalon she is today-- she may not be the same without it.

It started when she was just growing up-- just shy of adolescence. The diagnosis thoroughly devastated her at first. There were days where she'd just wake up and cry. The nagging pain in her joints as she tried to move herself into a sitting position days following the diagnosis only added fuel to the flame-- a nasty reminder of her misfortune. Her parents watched as she went from the happy, active little scamp she was to a mere husk of her former self. Sluggish, disinterested-- just generally depressed. Her parents and doctors urged her to keep moving, as to prevent the disease from worsening and becoming more of a problem, but she was too caught up in her grief to listen to them. She was just a child after all. All she wanted was to go outside and play. To run and climb and rough-house freely with her friends without the pain that followed.

To her, this was the end of her world. Adults could just grit their teeth and deal with it-- it was a pain, but they were old enough to know that it could be managed, and that it was relatively common in people of their age, and they could still live their life relatively normally with the nuisance.

But once again, she was just a child.

She hadn't even heard of arthritis. All she knew is that it prevented her from doing what she wanted. Some big, scary disease that it could only be managed-- but never cured. She thought it was the end of her life as she knew it.

She only remained despondent, which progressively grew more and more of a concern to her parents. This eventually came to a point where they had her admitted to a therapist-- in hopes that they would be able to get her to be more like her old self again.

And so this therapist ended up being the one to change her life.

Though Namine was less than eager to take on these sessions-- having figured it would be the same runaround she'd gotten used to hearing-- that it wasn't the end, that she could still do the things she wanted if she just tried. She'd shrug off her appointments, saying she was fine, or wasn't interested, or wasn't feeling well enough to go. Though, after some time, having enough of her parents constant pressing of her to try it-- they offered her an ultimatum. That she could go once, and if she decided she didn't like it, they wouldn't press her into it anymore. This had been the thing that coerced her into going on her first appointment.

On that faithful day, she just peeked into the office and was immediately quite surprised with what she saw. She expected another depressingly bland doctors office-- like the ones she had become so familiar with on her visits with her general practitioner and specialist. The ones she'd so grown to hate with every appointment. No, this one was more... friendly. The room was majority windows, their tall frames extending from the very top to the bottom of the wall-- which granted an abundance of natural light, along with a nice visage of the outside world. The parts that were not window were painted a soft and pale pink and foam mats adorned the floor. This room also contained many shelves-- houses to toys of many kind. Numerous stuffies, dolls and action figures, puzzles, tea sets, you name it. There was even a sand box in the corner of the room. The gentle environment is what lulled her in further.

As she walked in, she was met with a kind face, who was sitting atop the table-top in the center of the room. Namine was surprised to find out that this was her therapist. She'd expected another doctor-- perhaps an uptight old crow, or another man in a doctor's coat. Instead, she found a gentle looking kalon; hair tied up into two pigtails and a frilly dress-- kicking her mary-jane adorned feet as they dangled off the table. She'd almost thought she'd walk into some other child's room. The therapist reassured her and beckoned her over, inviting her to come and sit.

The meet started with idle chatter-- lighthearted conversation to get to know each other, establish a connection. The therapist introduced herself as Lena. They chat of mundane things, the weather, to their interests, to the newest shows on tv. She invites Namine to play with whatever toys she's like-- and plays with her as well.

Image
She noticed that one particular toy had caught Namine's eye-- a plush mermaid. She moves herself from the tabletop and walks over to one of the shelves to fetch at another plush toy-- a manatee-- before scooting over towards where the younger kalon sat-- one of the several beanbag chairs she'd set out on the floor. Better than any old stiff couch, she always thought.

"Do you want to play with me?" spoke Lena through the mouth of the manatee, smiling widely as she moved the stuffie she held closer to Namine's.

"Okay! What do you want to play?" replied the mermaid.

"I like to swim! Do you like to swim? How about we race?"

"Okay!! Ready, set-- let's go!!"

And so Namine and the mermaid sprung up, and jogged across the room, the manatee and Lena just a few footfalls behind. They circled the perimeter three times, before each collapsing onto the foam mats into two giggling heaps. This was the brightest she'd seen Namine look all day-- a stark transition from the withdrawn kalon that had initially walked into her office. She was getting somewhere.

"Do you like to swim, Namine?" Lena asked gently, setting the manatee beside her.

Namine's breath hitched at the question, and she had adverted her eyes. "I don't know how..." She then remained silent a few moments before piping up once more. "I wish I could though... I always wanted to be a mermaid." She admitted softly. "They're so pretty..."

"They are aren't they?" replied Lena. "How about you learn? I swam a bit in my day-- I could teach you, if you'd let me."

Namine tensed. "I don't... I don't know I..." She stopped her sentence short, and lowered her head. But Lena knew exactly what she was thinking.

"You know... cool water does wonders on the joints. It relieves inflammation, and well, the exercise you'll get from the swimming will help with the rest." She then leaned in, placing a paw over Namine's. "I think you'll make the perfect mermaid."

Lena allowed Namine to think on it, and to come back to her about it for the next session. She'd also offered the mermaid plush to Namine as a reminder-- an action that had filled Namine with glee. "To motivate you." Lena had said, her face lighting up just as Namine's did-- who now cuddled the plush even more tightly into to her chest.

Namine left the office as a different kalon. It wasn't immediately visible, but her expression was a little lighter, and a new feeling resonated within her. Like a sliver of... hope? She was still tentative, but was looking forward to her next session. She held her mermaid a little tighter as she dreamily wondered of the events to come. Maybe she really could become a mermaid?

Her nights were dream filled for the next week-- dreams of mermaids, of swimming-- happy things. They danced in the corners of her vision every time she closed her eyes. She was... excited.

Meanwhile, Lena conversed with Namine's parents very loosely about the details of her plan. They were a touch confused as to why she wanted to take Namine out to the beach for their next sessions, but they couldn't disagree with the certainty in Lena's voice. They just wanted their daughter to be happy again.

And so, after a week of anticipation, their next session finally rolled around and Namine was ready.

Or so she thought she was.

She leapt into the water as soon as she got there in her excitement. But the water was cold. She was in pain. She's never swam before. So she just... panicked.

Though Lena was not too far off. She trotted into the water where Namine was and held her afloat. "You have to start off slow. she had said.

Several sessions went like this-- Lena just holding Namine in the water. No swimming, no moving, just... stillness. Namine grows used to the temperature of the water. The sensation of the water on her pelt, and how it clings to her fur. She starts to get used to the motions of paddling her paws in the open water.

This process is a rather long one. Sometimes, as they take a step closer to swimming, Namine grows discouraged; scared. The days of discouragement are followed with nights of unrest. Dreams of friendly fishies and mermaids transforms into nightmares of sea monsters and beasts clawing at her-- dragging her down into the depths-- filling her throat and lungs with the ocean's salty spray.

Though as time goes on, this becomes less frequent. Before she knows it, she's floating on her own. She can go from the shallows over to the deeper end. She is able to stand up against the crashing waves (and only sometimes while holding Lena's hand through it) and swim against them.

Until finally,

she could swim on her own.

(𝓅𝑒𝓇𝓈𝑜𝓃𝒶𝓁𝒾𝓉𝓎)

Nowadays, she really is a ray of sunshine-- you'll never see her without a smile on her face. She's learned to take life in for all its worth, and just generally tries to live her life to the fullest. She tries to get others to do the same as well-- she's always looking out for others, and tries to help them in every way she can. And in such, she's pretty sociable as well-- she can make a friend out of just about anybody. She's just got a gentle, yet lighthearted demeanor that just makes her pretty likable. Though she can get a little bit flighty, if not air-headed, at times. She's always looking out for the best in everyone, and refuses to accept that anyone could be intrinsically bad, which has ultimately led to her being taken advantage of one time or another. She's pretty forgiving too, which only adds fuel to that fire. But she fiercely believes that everyone is redeemable, and that they surely must have their reasons for their actions.

┏━━━━━━━━━━━━━┓
Trait Analysis:

xxx+ jovial, driven, genuine
xxx- flighty, naive, sheltered
┗━━━━━━━━━━━━━┛

Jovial: Her friends say that she's never been in a bad mood. If she has been, no ones ever seen it. With her chipper tone and peppy demeanor, it's hard to even fathom that she's ever been depressed. She tries her best to instill this same energy into other people. If there's one thing she can't bear it's unhappiness. While she realizes that it isn't a perfect world-- people can and will always be sad from time to time, she tries her best to lessen their pain by being a pleasant presence. She hopes that she has at least brightened up somebody's day.

Driven: Namine just keeps going and going. She's by no means the best at everything, if not anything-- but she always perseveres. While others may get discouraged around the 10th- 20th attmempt, Namine's only more motivated to get better. She will not stop until she's made herself proud. Sometimes, while you can't be the best, you have to celebrate these smaller, personal victories.

Genuine: What you see is what you get with her-- she's here to help plain and true.
She has no ulterior motives to speak of and has never even shed a thought about using other people. She has no such need to.

Flighty: While she is a sweetheart all the way, she's not exactly the smartest kalon out there. In all honesty, she's kind of an airhead. She's easily distracted and easily amused and really just likes to enjoy life-- you probably shouldn't leave her with too many responsibilities though!

Naive: This fault ties into the last point-- she's really sweet, but to a fault. Her kindness has left her taken advantag of on several occassions. She just can't say no, and is easily influenced by others' emotions. One fabricated sob story will leave her in your paws. She'll believe every word of it-- so it's just too easy to sway her.

Sheltered: She's kind of in a world of her own at times-- even though she's constantly interacting with many different kalons, her home is in her daydreams-- so she's not exactly paying attention to the outside world as much as she could. This has left her quite sheltered.

(𝓅𝒶𝓈𝓈𝒾𝑜𝓃𝓈)

She's practically fueled by her passions-- she actively dedicates her breath and blood to make her dreams come true. She's crazy about the ocean-- she's been infatuated with the idea of the sea since she was a little girl. And the sessions with her therapist Lena had increased her love for the water tenfold. Her love for the ocean had expanded into a love for the life within it as well. Nowadays, on outings to the beach, she'll always be crouched next to a tide-pool, studying the life that gathers there. Her nickname, "the little mermaid" has been rightfully earned, and she wears it with pride-- you practically have to drag her away from the water when the tide starts to raise. During the summer, she practically lives there-- she visits the beach each consecutive day. She works part-time as a lifeguard during the light hours, and she takes part in annual horse-shoe crab monitoring programs at night-- summer is their spawning season, after all! Not to mention, she's currently studying to become a marine biologist at her university. She's come to realize that marine biology is her dream job-- so she's trying her best to do well in class! Though while she's not the most studious student, her interest in the material is what keeps her going, and so she's passing with flying colors!

As a young kit, she was always pretty cheery. Always smiling-- her most notable feature at the time, honestly-- and she was relatively talkative. She was, and still is, an only child so she was smothered in affection by her parents, who love her dearly. Surprisingly, even with all of that coddling, she wasn't a spoiled kid. Conversely, she was actually pretty generous. She would always be happy to share toys with her playmates with no fuss. If anything, she was glad to have the company of another companion to play with. It could even be said that she was a touch bit lonely deep down? Being an only child and all. While her parents swarmed her with affection, they were also relatively protective in her early years-- fussing over her safety-- warning her not to do anything too dangerous and monitoring where, when, and with who she would play with.

To go more in depth with her relationship with her parents, her mother was the enforcer of the two. The one who allotted the bedtimes and scheduled the playdates-- she wanted to raise her daughter right. However sometimes a touch too overbearing-- She wasn't particularly oppressive, and so Namine didn't feel too intimidated by her. She actually has a rather close relationship with her mother ordinarily. After all, her mother was also the one who stitched up the worn out teddy-bears and kissed the boo-boos.

Her father was the more jovial one; he was always one for jokes and doing fun things. He took Namine out to do many things--
sailing, fishing, even simple things like going to a park. And on some occassions he would even be able to goad his normally reserved wife to come along and join them on the outing.

Sailing was actually the thing to spark Namine's love for the sea initially, before Lena came along. She didn't live as close to the sea as she does now-- it was actually quite the trip to even see it. Though, her father shared this love for the oceanside-- almost as much as she did. She always dreamily spoke of moving there one day--

"One day I'll get your mother to agree" he had always said.

Though the trip there was half the fun-- their boat tied upon a trolley they had attached on their car. It was heavy, and only half secured, so it made clanking noises from the back of the car-- a noise that both Namine and her father would throw their head back and laugh at. One time, it had come loose, and the trolley detached from the car all together; an event that mad the two howl with laughter. The trip lasted quite a few hours, so they always stocked up on snacks prior. Junk food that they would get scolded at for eating later-- sometimes eating too much that they knew their stomachs would ache later-- but that, too, was all part of the fun.

Nothing beat the crisp, salty air as they drove closer and closer to the ocean side. They could see the buildings and houses thin out and give way to trees-- then flatland-- then finally the coast. The view of the coastline would always make her bubble with excitement.

Though it is when they hoisted the boat from the car into the sea that the real fun began. Sometimes they sailed some, before anchoring their boat to fish. Other times they would just sail idly-- letting the waves decide half the course. Though Namine's absolute favourite thing to do was whale watching. The first time she saw one she was completely in awe. They'd been out on the water one June afternoon, as usual. She'd hardly been paying attention until her father hastily tapped upon her shoulder, yelling for her to turn around. Upon turning around she caught sight of her first whale. It was only a glimpse-- she'd only managed to see its tail dip back into the water-- but it was the most magical experience she's ever had, no doubt.

After this, she begged and begged for her father to take her out more to catch sight of more creatures. Feeling a swell of pride for his daughter's interest in the very same things that made him happy, he couldn't say no. They came out and watched for whales,
dolphins, seals-- whatever passed by.

Though one special encounter had to be the time that they saw a manatee.

Her father had abruptly made a sharp left-- then a fierce halt-- an action that sent Namine straight down to the deck. Startled, she questioned what had happened.

"Manatee" he had breathed.

He explained the nature of these gentle animals -- the equivalent of cows of the sea. They were gentle creatures. Free floating wherever the waves took them. They were also relatively friendly to kalons, swimming up by their boats to say hello. However, they are so gentle that they often do not pay attention to where they are going-- and often get hit by ships.

"Wouldn't want to hurt the mermaids of the animal kingdom!"

"Mermaids?" she had asked. This had been surprisingly the first time she had heard of the term. Her father blinked, then laughed, before explaining what a mermaid was.

"They're beautiful creatures-- they look like you and me, except that instead of legs, they have fins and tails-- like a fish!" He explained many tales of the creatures after this-- lores of sirens who lured sailors to their deaths by their beautiful song, to tales of benevolent mermaids who brought shipwrecked sailors back to shores, and helped sea animals that were caught in plastic, or ocean garbage.
Image
(cred to Flowerlily135 for above pixel)

This was the very moment that started it all-- started Namine's intense love for mermaids.

"You know, I wouldn't be too surprised if you were a mermaid in disguise!" he teased. "with such a love for the ocean-- who are you and what have you done to my kalon daughter?"

He laughed heartily at his joke, and so did she-- though he hadn't anticipated the impact that it had on her. Mermaids filled her daydreams-- Maybe she was a mermaid. she'd constantly hope. Maybe she was.

She's grown much from her kit days-- both physically and emotionally. She now takes the time to swim daily (she even dreams of swimming sometimes!) and it's become less of a strenuous task for her to do so. (She's actually got pretty decent sized muscles!) She's also moved by the beach as soon as she was able to round up enough money to do so.

The wisdom that Lena has given her has deeply touched Namine, and so she carries it with her. In her free time she volunteers to teach children how to swim. Swimming has liberated her so, that she has vowed to teach others of the wonders that a dip in nice cool water can provide. Parents are amazed with how patient she is with the kids-- making sure they understand the very core basics, correcting their form, providing encouragement... they somehow comment how they wish that they were younger so that Namine could teach them too. To which Namine always responds that it's "never too late to learn!" She also always extends an invitation for willing parents to swim with their kids sometime, and perhaps pick up some tips from it. She's even almost debating on requesting an adult class to teach as well. Her current class runs on Saturday and Sunday afternoons in the summer.

────────────────────────────────────────────────♥───────────────────────────────────────────

Image

────────────────────────────────────────────────♥───────────────────────────────────────────

In the parts of summer when she's not running her classes, she also serves as a lifeguard. She's developed a sharp eye for swim techniques after all of these years-- so she's pretty good at telling whether someone who's flopping like a goldfish is just really bad at swimming or actually drowning.

Though these are reserved for just summer. As much as she'd like to do this year round, another dream has captured her heart-- marine biology. She's currently attending university to study it. She's never been the best student, but it's her passion for the sea that keeps her going.

She loves the sea greatly, and does everything she can to give back to it. In between all of her activities, she tries to participate in beach cleanups-- or even park clean-ups (as everything reaches the ocean, eventually!) One issue that is always on her mind is the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. When she initially heard of 700,000 sq. km side and 9 foot deep trash vortex she was utterly heartbroken. Learning that sea animals ended up getting sick from eating this waste was just devastating to her. She's written numerous proposals on how to remedy the problem, and is hoping that one day, one will strike a chord with the right people, and be put into motion.

────────────────────────────────────────────────♥───────────────────────────────────────────

Namine still maintains contact with her parents, even though she lives closer to the sea now-- and thus hours away from her parents. She always drops by for holidays, and urges them to come and visit her all the time-- which they do whenever they have the time for a road trip.

Her fathers older now-- his pelt thinning and growing white in some spots, but he still enjoys the sea as much as he did when he and Namine were younger. They still go out to sail together-- though he teaches her how to man the ship now. But he still smiles just as brightly-- a smile that transports him back in time, making him look twenty years younger.

Her mother still waits for them-- she is still not so keen on the whole water and sailing idea, but she waits for them to return anyhow-- fretting slightly over their safety, but overall pleased that they are having fun. "I will get your mother out here one day!" Namine's father still exclaims, loud enough for her mom to hear and they all laugh. Time may have passed, but not much has changed.

────────────────────────────────────────────────♥───────────────────────────────────────────

As for Lena-- Namine couldn't thank her enough for all she's done for her, and begged for her to be able to still keep in touch-- which Lena happily agreed to. They hang out when they can; they've actually become quite good friends. Lena's fascinated by Namine's intense passion for the ocean and marine life, and Namine's thrilled to have someone who will listen to her ramble on about it, so they make great friends.

Namine is a big fan of
aesthetically
pleasing things-- she loves pastel
colors in particular. She always
carries a camera around with her
in her purse in the instance of
spotting a particularly pale
pink-y
kind of sunset or some such else.
Candid photos are also a big part
of her aesthetic. To her friends'
total displeasure, she will take
candid photos of them when
they're all hanging out. She
always will toss them later
if her friend's really request
her to, but there's just something
about them-- the "in the moment"
vibe that you get from them--
that truly makes them
special. It's a whole side that
you don't see when you're
simply posing for a picture.
She also loves to wear cute
clothes.Though, this doesn't
particularly mean she's the
best at accessorizing.
Her intense love, and I really
do mean LOVE for
cute clothes has brought
about some particuarly...
"interesting" looks in the past.
Mostly outfits composed of
three different layers of
clothes stacked on top of each
other in the early days, while
she was still figuring out her
"style". She's definitely
toned it down a tad since then,
but you will always see her
adorned in something, whether
it be a few choice hair clips or
a pretty skirt; she's all
about the looks. She's also
pretty known for posting her
"outfit of the day" photos onto
her social media.

nami's stuff:
Polaroid: For some sneaky photos
of her and her friends when they
go on adventures! alongside some assorted
photographs loose in her bag. Note: buy more film!!

Cellphone: Essential to keep on hand at all times!
Sea themed phone case, of course. <3

Earbuds: For listening to tunes on the go! It would
be nice to listen to music out loud-- but sometimes
some people prefer quiet
Shell purse: Namine's favourite shell purse.
On hand at all times! Roomier than it looks! Adorned with
cell-phone charms, of course!

Lip gloss: She looooves lip gloss. She always has at
least one on her person-- oftentimes more. She never finishes
them before buying a new one though-- so the amount she has
at home is soon to be reaching hoard status.

Lip balm: For when her lips get chapped.
Strawberry flavour is best!
