@Tomato: First, I really like your idea of items denoting rank. Second, maybe the punishments could range from being forced to stay in camp to being forced to not eat for a certain amount of time, mostly depending on the rank of the cat and reason for taking off the item. For example, while an apprentice annoyed with the item might be forced to stay in camp for a few days, a warrior-aged cat who should know the rules would be forced to not eat or sleep, depending on how unhappy the leader is.
