"Hmm," said Race, watching the rain get heavier outside. "Well, don't worry," he said teasingly. "I won't let the big bad raindrops wash you away." He turned himself in a circle a few times before lying down on the cold stone floor, yawning widely as he did so. "Besides," the brown wolf added, scratching at the white diamond in the middle of his forehead with one paw. "This cave stays high and dry through all kinds of bad weather. This storm won't be any different."

Aries sighed, looking at her paws. "This is why I don't like talking about it. A wolf, scared of water? It makes no sense." she shook her head, her eyes sad. "I've tried getting over my fear, tried to force myself over it by jumping into rivers, but all I do is panic and get back out." She twisted around, watching him settle down. The cave was small enough that whenever she moved, their pelts brushed, so she quickly got in a more comfortable position and laid down as far from him as she could, although their pelts were still touching. She laid her head on her paws and watched the rain fall, memorized and scared at the same time.

Race nodded as she spoke, but when she shuffled about and the ashen wolf found that their pelts were brushing, he scooted away from her. He had agreed to take her in as a traveling companion- friends, if it came to that- but nothing more. He hoped she didn't see it any other way, but to break the silence he said, "I don't think you should force yourself to get rid of the fear. Being scared is what makes you a wolf- without fear, you can't ever be brave."

Aries bit back the pain that shot through her when he shuffled away and she moved even further away, pressing herself against the stone wall of the cave. She turned her head away from him, knowing that at that moment, her thoughts were probably shining in her eyes. She was attracted to the handsome wolf, but it was obvious he did not feel the same way. She shivered because of the chill the wall caused, but didn't make a move near him. Closing her eyes, the pretty she-wolf feigned sleep, knowing her act was very convincing. Soon it truly looked like she was fast asleep, no longer in the grips of the terror brought on by the rain.

Race turned his head slightly in order to look over at Aries, a quiet sadness filling his stomach. He realized that he might be hurting Aries by rejecting her this way, but he didn't think he could afford romantic distractions at the moment. He just... there were so many things that needed to be done. She was pretty, he admitted that much, but he needed to have vengeance first. As far as he was concerned, he wasn't worthy of anybody until he had reclaimed his rightful place in Lone Star Pack. Beka had forced him out, and this had left a gaping hole in his pride. Until he was Alpha by conquest, he didn't see himself being worthy of anyone, especially a she-wolf as pretty as Aries.

She felt his eyes on her, but didn't move, keeping her breathing even and steady. Just as quickly as it had started, the rain stopped and she lifted her head. After making sure it was in fact done raining, she stepped over Race and walked outside of the cave, her ears twitching. She sat down on the hill, still near the cave, looking around.

Race closed his eyes as Aries stepped over him, saying, "Get back inside. The sun's going down, and it's probably going to snow later. We're up, almost to the foothills of Moon Mountain." He tucked his head under his paws, trying to massage a bit of warmth back into his near-frozen ears.

She did as he asked, stopping when she saw what he was doing. With a low growl, she laid next to him, resting her chin gently on his head, using her warmth to help him. "Now don't get any ideas from this." she growled, knowing it would sound playful. "I need my companion to have his ears. And besides, we'll both stay warm better this way. I can sense the coming storm is not going to be a friendly one. Once the entrance is packed with snow, we can go back to avoiding one another like the plague."

Aries's statement made Race laugh, and he playfully put one of his paws on top of her head, covering one of her ears. "Here," he said, "You cover my ears, and I'll cover yours. That way, we can both make sure that we each have our ears." As he was talking, his paws slipped off of Aries's forehead and the brown wolf slipped forwards, bumping his nose against hers. He backed off quickly, skin turning an ashamed red underneath his brown fur. "Sorry," he mumbled, turning away in embarrassment.

As soon as his nose had made contact with hers, her tail had started thumping against the ground. She leaned forward and pressed her nose to his, then stood up as much as she could in the cave. "Wish this wasn't stone." she remarked, crouching slightly. "Then we could make it bigger." She shook her head, laughing as the tips of her ears brushed the stone roof.
