I HAVE A QUESTION!
TYPE OF QUESTION:Math! (Factoring and Quadratics)
YOUR QUESTION:A boy throws a ball vertically upward from the top of a cliff. The height of the ball above the base of the cliff is approximated by the equation h=65+10t-5t^2, where h is in meters (m) and t is the time after the ball is thrown, in seconds
When does the ball hit the ground?
I've gotten to:
0=65+10t-5t^2
0=-5(t^2-2t-13)
I can't seem to figure out where to go from here. The answer, by the way, is 4.75 seconds.

So!

First of all, since it equals 0, you can multiply the -5 over to clean it up, because -5(0) is 0.
0=t^2-2t-13

Here, you would try to figure out what factors would lead to that equation. I usually look at the term without a variable and start by seeing what multiplies to get that number that also adds to get the variable before it. In this instance, I would ask what multiplies to get -13 that adds to get -2. The problem is that 13 is prime. So what do you do if it's prime?

Quadratic equation!

The quadratic equation is [-b +- sqrt(b^2 -4ac)]/2a

The equation you're working with is set up as 0= At^2 + Bt + C

Don't forget negatives! So B is -2 and c is -13. Since t^2 is without a coefficient, A is 1.

Try and plug what you have into the equation and feel free to PM me to further explain! (:

    Typically, factoring would be easiest, but since 13 is a prime number, and won't split easily into factors, your next option is the quadratic formula (hopefully, you've been taught this formula). So, you've got:
    0 = -5(t^2 - 2t - 13), where a=1, b=-2, c=-13

    ......2±√4-4(1)(-13)
    .............2
    ....= 2±√56
    .........2
    ....= 2±7.5
    ........2
    Solve, and you get x = 4.75 seconds, and x = -2.75 seconds. Logic and the problem's context tell you that time cannot go backwards, so you ignore the -2.75 answer, and there it is - the ball will hit the ground 4.75 seconds after being thrown.

    @pippin. - I had french a few years ago and I don't remember a lot, but here's me, translating a foreign language into another foreign language ahah, there might be a few mistakes here and there but you can understand the english part, even if badly written I presume xs

      Carole: At breakfast, I ate cereals and I drank an orange juice. At noon, I ate a cheese sandwich and an yoghurt. At night, I had a pizza with green salad and after that a chocolate mousse. Delicious!

      Rémy: Generally, I don't have breakfast so I didn't eat yesterday in the morning but I drank a cup of milk. At lunch I had pasta and an apple. At dinner, I ate chicken with potatoes and carrots.

      Mélissa: Yesterday, I ate a toast with jam and I drank a coffee. At lunch I had a hamburger and chips at the college's canteen. I had a snack in the afternoon - a banana. At dinner I didn't have a lot of soup because I wasn't very hungry. I drank a hot chocolate before going to bed.

    I hope this is at least understandable. If there's anything you didn't understand please let me know!

I HAVE A QUESTION!
TYPE OF QUESTION:
English, I would like someone to proof my essay and see if it makes sense, if I've made silly grammatical errors, etc. <3

YOUR QUESTION:
(I'll put it in the Code so it does not take up much space, and will put the prompt under the code)
Code: Select all
1984, a well-known novel written by George Orwell, presents a fictional world which heavily differs from the reality that many people living during modern times have come to know. The sheer level of oppression and disregard for the wellbeing of the people by their government leaves the reader with a certain feeling of unease; could something like this happen within our own world, or was Orwell simply warning us against letting our lives get to this point? After a close analysis of the text, the evidence appears to point to one conclusion: this could very well happen in a modern-day society, and perhaps makes the message of the novel more important now than during the time it was written.

   In order to understand the novel’s relevance to our world, it is important to consider how The Party maintained their power. As Winston read in The Theory and Practice of Oligarchical Collectivism, “an...increase in wealth threatened the destruction...of a hierarchical society” (585). The Party heavily believed in this ideal. To them, if the people were to become wealthy and see their lives as having meaning, then they would be capable of compromising their power. Similar circumstances are found within the government of North Korea. While the comparison between these two states is common, it is for good reason; it almost appears as though the country has taken everything Orwell warned against and incorporated it into its system of government. After the country’s doors were open to tourists, American reporters took the opportunity to document what management was like in North Korea. They found shocking similarities to what was described in 1984; lies about the amount of food produced, unreliable electrical systems, most of the citizenry living below the poverty line, baseless hatred towards western countries, and a blind devotion to the leader of the government are just a few of the shocking occurrences uncovered by reporters. The readers of 1984 know through Winston’s experiences that Party members were victims of similar circumstances. They were lied to about production quotas being met, the electricity in housing complexes was rarely, if ever, functional, everyone except Inner Party members found their most basic needs being neglected, the Two Minutes Hate induced a frenzied hatred towards foreign concepts and figures, and endless propaganda displays pushed the idea of complete devotion to Big Brother.

   While it is clear that North Korea’s tactics are similar to The Party’s, the argument can be made that a fundamental difference between the two lies in the reasoning for employing said tactics. The Party has admitted that their motivation is “Not wealth or luxury or long life or happiness: only power, pure power,” whereas North Korea’s reasoning is not so clear. Therefore, some may conclude, one cannot be so quick to compare the two countries when the root cause of their issues cannot be proven to be identical, and as such 1984 serves no bearing on today’s world. However, the general message of Orwell’s novel can be boiled down to a simple statement: totalitarian governments of any kind are dangerous and lead to the maltreatment of the people living under them. Therefore, when a country such as North Korea so closely mimics the oppression faced by the Party members, which is the main focus throughout the majority of the novel, it is important to take a step back and wonder how any nation during the 21st century was able to get to this point, and wonder if it could potentially influence other territories that may presently seem unaffected.

   Ultimately, the message of 1984 continues to remain relevant to this very day. The unbelievable atrocities faced by the citizens in the novel have taken on a much more realistic form within the borders of North Korea. Having observed the development of a totalitarian government during modern times, it is more important than ever to take Orwell’s message to heart and ensure our own country does not end up on the same path. Once an authoritative body takes hold of a government and suppresses its people into subordination, it will become unimaginably difficult to undo the damage and reclaim a democratic way of life.

Prompt:
In an essay of at least 300 words, explore the questions posed and argue whether the message of 1984 is more or less important now than it was upon its first publication. Could any society today be oppressed by its government to the degree that Oceania is oppressed? Or is 1984 a purposeful exaggeration of a worst-case scenario? Support your argument with quotes and/or details from 1984.

    Must say I've never read 1984, so I can't speak for content, but overall the grammar/spelling/punctuation etc is fantastic, A+.

    One thing, though - "Therefore, some may conclude, one cannot be so quick to compare the two countries when the root cause of their issues cannot be proven to be identical, and as such 1984 serves no bearing on today’s world."
    Yes, perhaps the society of 1984 can't be compared perfectly with North Korea, but why do you say this serves no bearing on the world at all? c: Something to think about, because the cause->effect of the sentence doesn't seem to flow.~ Maybe "due to the world's inability to provide conditions precisely like those featured in the novel, it can be said that 1984 does not serve any bearing on the modern world"?

Thank you very much! And I wasn't trying to present that as one of my arguments, but rather as a potential counter-argument c:
Perhaps I need to clarify that in my essay xD
