Murderers in Riverclan V.2 [Roster Update 10/30]

Splashwhisker woke to a quiet morning, which he had gotten uncomfortably used to during the past few moons. Gone were the days of apprentices waking early, eager to begin training; where the fresh-kill pile was stacked high with the bounty of the river. The tom, though he hated to admit it, still had trouble sleeping—there were too many empty nests in the warriors' den. At least he had his sisters, he reminded himself.

The warrior rose to his paws, and briefly took note of how sparse camp was—even with the illness, camp usually wasn't this empty—and he noticed Riversplash poking her head into the medicine den. "'Morning," he mewed, surprisingly gentle in tone; Splashwhisker seldom used this voice, especially for his sister, who was usually the subject of light teasing. "How're you feeling? Did Cloverheart say you'll recover soon?"

Riversplash jumped slightly at Splashwhisker's voice.
"Oh! My throat's just a bit sore, so I came to ask for some honey." She sniffed the air.
"You haven't seen Cloverheart by any chance, have you?" She poked her head back in and sniffed the floor, noting
how stale Cloverheart's scent was.

Splashwhisker frowned. The medicine cat was usually nearby in the morning. "No, I just got up—and not many cats are around. Maybe something's up." He glanced around again, noticing their leader was nowhere in sight, either. "Potoostar's not here, either ..." He trailed off as he scented the air, and noticed the scents of several cats were near the camp entrance. He didn't want to cause a panic, and perhaps there was nothing to worry about, but the warrior began to feel on edge.

Moonfur awoke and glanced about the den, surprised to see it was mostly empty. Rising from her spot, she padded into the camp, looking around for any cats nearby. She sniffed the air when she saw there were very few of her clanmates around, noting the scent of multiple cats that hung around the camp entrance. Had something happened?

"this is insane!"

the panicked chattering of the cats
fell quiet as fadedbriar's yowl rose
up, clearly in disbelief.

"cloverheart, are you certain that
moonfur is the one who attacked
you?" potoostar asked, his eyes
narrowed with thought, tail
flicking once.

the white-and-cream she-cat
looked down at her paws. "...i can't
be sure, but i do believe that to be
true."

"you're only listening to her because
she's your own blood." fadedbriar
spat at their leader, and potooostar's
eyes widened. he opened his mouth,
but it wasn't he who spoke.

"if cloverheart says so, then we
should believe her." splashwhisker
piped up. "i'm sorry, fadedbriar, but,
wouldn't she know best who tried to
take her life?"

moonfur's eyes began to fill with
tears, and she shook her head. "that
isn't true! why would i try to kill her?"

potoostar stood. "enough. moonfur,
until we get this figured out, you must
leave the territory. i know not where
you will choose to go, but you must."
his words were firm, but his eyes shone
with regret.

"then i'm going, too," fadedbriar
growled softly, hunching over his mate
protectively. "if she is to leave, then i
must leave with her."

sorrow crossed potoostar's face,
before he simply nodded. "i understand.
if we are somehow mistaken, then i
myself will fetch you. you have been
a loyal deputy, and you have been good
to us all these moons."

fadedbriar's eyes softened. "i wish i was
able to same the same of you and this
clan, but even moonfur's littermates have
turned against us."

the tom turned, nudging moonfur softly
on the flank, before moving towards the
entrance, both cats hanging their heads
and leaning into one another as they
disappeared from view.

for shame, riverclan! you have exiled a
pair! find the killer before it is too late!
with fadedbriar gone, potoostar makes
beesting the temporary deputy.
