RIVERCLAN
The Kill wrote:cloverheart still mourned.
it seemed like only yesterday that
things had gone downhill, disease
wiping through riverclan's ranks
and tearing through their livelihood.
there had been terrible suffering
done by every cat within the clan,
and with so many losses the mood
had become dreary almost at a
constant. no-one had been untouched
by the brutality of the disease--her
mother, goldencreek, had been taken
by it, as had the mates and littermates
and parents and children of her friends
and family. worse still had been the
death of her apprentice, whom she
had failed to save--one of the first to be
lost. to this day, she still felt shame and
sorrow, and, when gazing upon her own
daughter, felt guilt that lichenpaw was
given life through such a horrendous
event, whilst mintpaw had been made
to suffer and die.
but she was not the only cat who still
fought waves of grief that threatened to
drown their victims.
the grass was soft and cool under clover-
-heart's paws as she padded quietly
through the forest, eyes flitting back and
forth, searching. she'd been fairly
successful finding the herbs she needed,
but had yet to find significant feverfew
growth so far this spring--after all, most
of it had been used in all territories in
order to fight the horrible symptoms of
the plague that had terrorized them. she
could see the striped stems of the plant,
trying to recover after the brutal usage
of their flowers and the bitter winter, and
cloverheart's eyes softened. she hoped
that no one caught a fever until they'd a
chance to grow.
as the she-cat's mind wandered, there was
a soft sound in the undergrowth behind her.
it startled her, and she dropped the herbs
she was carrying, whipping around as her
claws unsheathed. a paw caught her on the
side of the head, and she stumbled, vision
spinning as she scrambled for purchase on
the wet, grassy ground. blood pounded in
her ears, disorienting her, and her assailant
crashed into her side, shoving her back
harshly.
she had no time to fight back, her swollen
belly weighing her down, her sight darkened
by static, and she cried out as she felt the
ground leave her, her body heaving up and
over a ledge. for a moment, she was
suspended mid-air, and her vision began to
stabilize itself just enough for her to realize
she was falling.
she hit the water hard, a cold shock rippling
through her body, and she felt fear, struggling
to gain some sense of balance as the river
tossed her like a rag doll. was she going to
die here? her lungs burned, and she couldn't
discern up from down, thrashing her legs
uselessly. maybe this was punishment. maybe
she was being punished by starclan for the
lives she couldn't save. maybe--
suddenly, she could breathe.
teeth sunk into her scruff, and she was
dragged from the water onto the bank,
gasping roughly. her rescuer panted,
almost wheezing, as if from effort,
before something rustled in the bushes.
as cloverheart attempted to recover,
her hero dashed off, back into the trees,
and she was left alone, wet and shivering
when her vision finally cleared and ears
ceased to pound angrily.
what in starclan's name had happened?
watch out, riverclan! someone has tried to
murder your faithful medicine cat! find
the killer and discern their motive, before
it's too late!
