The flower on her tongue is poisonous and affects her mental state severely.

Her father warned her not to eat flowers as a child, but she was never good at listening. At age seven she ate a black-eyed susan, and her life hasn't been the same since. Her eyes turned black, and she became insane. She's now nineteen, still living with her father on the edge of a village. He concocts potions with natural ingredients that he hopes will cure her, but they never work. Flowers casually grow on her body-some she lets stay, some she snips off.
She often sees things that are not there or hears noises in the woods, so she chases after them. This scares the other villagers. when she takes these night-walks, Hana will feast upon more flowers and it makes her sick.
Usually by morning her father has found her, and brings her back home. This constant cycle drives her more insane.

What drives her insane? //
Kaoru is incredibly quiet. She is often mistaken as being mute, which doesn't particularly bother her. What does drive her insane, however, is how strongly people react when they realize that she can speak. It has been a common occurrence ever since her parents made a large ordeal out of her speaking her first word (at age 4). Kaoru has a hard time speaking because of the flower growing out of her tongue and it upsets her when people freak out over her speaking normally. What she wants is to be able to talk like everyone else and not have it be a big deal.
