The Pride of Bent Trees, shortened to Bent Trees by most of its members,
was recently founded by a handsome and strong, albeit selfish and easily
flustered, king named Oriq. He was quickly joined by a scraggly and slightly
younger queen by the name of Saaj. She is known for her steady head,
loyalty, and being an utter failure at fighting. Even though Oriq is the most
dominant in the pride, he tends to do whatever his queen says.
The pride’s territory covers a wide swath of desert. Theirs is a land of rolling
dunes and wide skies, pale-furred lions and emaciated quarry, scarce oases
and thin trees, huge rocks and grit forever in the lion’s mouths. It is a place
most active at night, where only the wiliest can survive.
Both Oriq and Saaj worship a vast pantheon of gods: Kek, goddess of the hunt;
Tija, god of war; Aklo, goddess of fertility; Oeq, god of rain; and many more.
They draw crude portraits of their gods in the sand and carve them into the
sides of walls, worship at rocks and oases through which they believe they
can communicate with the god’s messengers: their ancestors.
While the pride doesn’t have a personality yet, Saaj expects it to be a pride of
hardy, close-knit lions and struggling but happy members. Oriq thinks it will be
a pride of hope: a group of living, breathing lions to all symbolize the message
“We made it”.
