The Blue Featherkhim's: dremora, pixel, and nereus
word count: 712
Muzzle buried deep in a berry bush, the overo mare's irritation increased with each passing second. The flies pestered her, darting close to her eyes and hovering before her ears, and Dremora nearly lost her cool and ripped the poor bush to pieces. For a split second she couldn't remember what exactly drove her to be snout first in a berry bush. Until a vividly blue bird fluttered past and moved on.
That's right the mare thought as she continued to shift her muzzle around in the bush that feather. Pixel, Dremora's closest friend, had somehow lost possession of her favourite blue feather and had been in a funk for too long, so the overo mare decided to help her out and find her a new one. Lord knows how long Dremora had been tracking every blue bird she spotted, but each time they either flew too far away or were much too fast for her to follow. Until that morning, when a particularly fatigued blue bird had allowed her to track it into the forest where it graciously dropped a feather....right into a berry bush. She hadn't realized how thick berry bushes could be until she was muzzle deep in one trying to find a dropped feather. After long minutes of shuffling around in the bush, she finally spotted it and snagged it up gently with her firm teeth. Relief flooded overo her as she backed out of the bush, finally glad to not have to put up with the pesky insects that hovered over her like storm clouds. With a flick of her ivory tail, Dremora set off towards the tree-line, to where she knew her friend would be grazing.
"Pixel! I found it!" came a rather ecstatic voice from the left of the grullo appaloosa. Pixel lifted her head from the cluster of lush grass she had been grazing on, shaded ears perked curiously towards her friend. "Found what?" Pixel questioned, a puzzled look crossing her face as she took a step towards Dremora who trotted over to her. "The feather! The blue feather you lost, I found it. Well, I found one almost identical to it anyways" the white and brown mare explained as she held the feather out to her friend between her teeth. For a brief second, Pixel could only star at her friend in awe that she had actually gone out of her way to find another feather to replace the one she had lost. When Dremora's happy smile slipped slowly, the appaloosa quickly shot her friend a smile to reassure her. "Thank you Mory" she thanked her, using the nickname she had given her when they were younger, reaching out and taking the feather from between her friend's clasped teeth. Her friend beamed back at her, clearly overjoyed that she accepted the feather and liked it.
From the corner of her eye, Pixel spotted a large frame situated by the river's edge and for some reason there was something off about the scene. It wasn't that the mare wasn't used to catching glimpses of Nereus, the stoic stallion who had a heart of gold, it was the blue feather that was wedged in his mane. She looked back at Dremora and nudged her to look and her friend's face contorted into a look of confusion. "Hey!" Dremora called out before Pixel had the chance to stop her. The white and brown mare made her way towards Nereus, Pixel in tow much to her dismay. "Why do you have Pixel's feather?" she questioned with narrowed eyes. Nereus stared blankly at the mares for a few seconds before his eyes glanced upward to the higher part of his mane. "Oh. That." he nickered when he finally understood what they were talking about. "A squirrel left it behind a couple days ago. Haven't been able to reach it to get it off." he explained with a shrug. A series of chuckles turned Dremora's head to the side to watch as Pixel's body shook with laughter. "It's alright Nereus. Here, I'll give you a hand with that" the grullo mare's eyes danced with amusement as she reached up and dislodged the feather from his mane. "Ah, thanks." the stallion dipped his head to the two mares before moving on.
