"Ugh," said Melody, fanning herself again. "The hideous thing! I will not pay more than eight gold crowns for it." The tailor glared at the girl. "Now, look here," she said, and Melody was caught up in the merchant's game. "Twenty is as low as I can sell it for. I must make a profit, you know." Melody looked away, haughty. "Dahhhling," she said, speaking not to the tailor but rather to an exquisite, peacock-feathered hat to her left. "This... this disgrace to the tailor's craft is not worth five. Eight is as high as I will pay, and even that is far too much." The tailor glared, then said, nine and twelve silvers." Melody shook her head. "Better make it six," she said. The tailor growled in her throat. "Eight and thirty silvers." "Seven," said Melody. "Seven and thirty." "Seven and ten." The tailor's eyebrows snapped together angrily, but then she said, "Fine! Seven gold, ten silver." Melody smiled, and extracted the amount from her tiny leather money-purse. "Gladly," she said, handing it over. "Nice doing business with you, dahhhling." The tailor counted the money and put it away, thinking foolishly that she had gotten the better of the deal. She put the dress in a thin white box and handed it to Melody, who in turn gave it to Alexa. "Being the daughter of a merchant helps," she said into her companion's ear, giggling slightly so the tailor would suspect her of conveying some piece of trivial gossip.
