Snowflight nodded. "Poppypaw and Rosetail it is then. We'll start near the riverbank, then go to the adder rocks." She had a small spark of hope that Alpinepaw could possibly be alive, but doubt shadowed it.

Rosetail immediately heads for the entrance. She's crazy worried. Actually, she might go crazy because of worry.

Silverpaw fluttered her eyes open slowly. It took her a while to remember where she was. The medicine cat den, and not the nursery. She didn't have a good night's sleep at all, having nightmares of Lillyheart. She wished they were correct, but at the same time, she didn't want to face the fact her mother was a killer. The silver cat smiled up at her new mentor. "Good morning, Littlestep," Silverpaw said tiredly.

Snowflight surveyed the forest, smelling Lilyheart's scent, and feeling a tang of grief at the queen whose kits had turned against her. She suddenly smelled the tang of blood, and gasped. She sped up, not believing her nose. A cry of surprise and horror clawed out of her throat as she spied two sodden heaps of fur on the banks of the river, blood staining the ground beside one of them.

Rosetail hurries up beside the deputy and horror chokes in her throat. Her legs tremble beneath her before she collapses beside her - admittedly new, though she'd bonded quickly to the young tom - apprentice, a wail of grief tearing out of her.
