Bastian’s childhood was mostly spent with the solitude of his own thoughts.
He didn’t find any particular comfort in the presence of other kalons, so he slowly backed into himself and found he was quite content with being alone.
That being said, Bas had few friends. He rarely spoke out to anyone and kept his feelings to himself. He wasn’t unhappy; just being the quiet-loving kid that he was, Bas stuck to his own and saw no purpose in making friends.
Growing up with virtually zero friends never proved to be an issue for Bas- not until he started his angsty teen years. In an attempt to block out those newly rising self-loathing thoughts, Bas put forth all of his effort into schoolwork. At times everything got to be too much, especially since Bas had no one to get his emotions out to. He excelled at what he studied though- and in one advanced class, he met a kalon that would forever change his life. Elara Labrie, a perky kalon with a love for mythology, promptly placed herself beside his desk and would not leave him alone until he agreed to be her partner for an upcoming project. The two immediately became best friends and bonded over their love for books. Bastian was timid and awkward at first, but he soon warmed up to Elara and the two became inseparable best friends. It was the first time he could really trust another kalon and it was a completely new experience for Bastian; this was the first kalon Bas didn’t feel the absolute need to scoff at with some insult. She helped to push the dark clouds from his mind. She taught him the importance of focusing on the good and keeping himself facing the sun- which was whatever made him happy; whether that be another kalon, school subject, or even the occasional solitude.
Unfortunately all good things come to an end.
After years of promising to stay best friends forever, years after planning to beat the world together, the two drifted apart.
Bas can’t even remember what the argument was about—it was probably over some other kalon they both liked. Or maybe it was how Elara was planning to move away for her job.
Whatever the reason was, Elara and Bas both found that their friendship had run its course and they just weren’t working out anymore. After a few fights and lots of anger filled sarcastic remarks, the two broke away and stopped speaking. Elara had assured Bas that there were plenty other kalons out there, but he has yet to find another friend as close as Elara.
