flintpaw caught the young she-cat's gaze, relief flooding him at the change of votes. littlepaw and willowpaw were the closest things to littermates he had--he wouldn't sit quietly while somecat accused them of murder. besides, it was true--ashtree would never have left his post for an apprentice. "i think shadewave makes more sense-" he mewed quietly, as if anxious of retaliation from the stern deputy. "if the deputy asked someone to leave their post, they might do it, right?" as much as flintpaw didn't want it to be true, that really seemed the most likely.

Pansyleaf agreed with Flintpaw. "It seems to me that the most likely...killer," if Ashtree was dead, "would be a warrior. But who would leave their post just because their friend said so? It stands to reason that only a cat of high rank could have pursuaded Ashtree to leave his post. Like Shadewave." As much as it pained her to say it, Pansyleaf knew that this was the most likely explenation. Unless it was Juniperstar... But no; she couldn't have because she sent out the patrol. Would she want to keep it quiet if that were the case?

Juniperstar stood in front of her clan, looking uncomfortable and unsure. Beside her stood Shadewave, the deputy who she trusted with all of her heart. A patrol had recovered Ashtree's body from the forest, and the discovery of a faded second scent had announced foul play. It had all but thrown the clan into a frenzy, each cat nervously glancing at one another as if they expected snakes to slither from their clanmates' ears. It had gotten to the point where Juniperstar had to call an emergency clan meeting after the burial of the fallen warrior. She had yet to announce her reasoning, and her clan was waiting anxiously for the reply. With a quick glance at Shadewave, who looked impassively back at her, she raised her chin and addressed the gathered cats.

"I know some of you believe that Ashtree's death was the result of a murder, but-" A chorus of shouts rose from below, shaking the snowy she-cat's already uncertain confidence. After a moment of this, she set her jaw and slammed her paw down for silence. Slowly, the clan obliged. "But we can't be certain." She continued, choosing each word carefully. Disbelief and accusation radiated from the cats below, and she knew that if she didn't do something that the clan would take justice into their own paws. "We will set it to a vote. Those of you who feel so strongly that a killer sleeps in your dens, take the fate of another to chance." The edge in her meow was more than noticed, and a few cats found themselves looking at their paws. How could they send one of their trusted clanmates to a life of exile based on a freak accident? Most, however, found that guilt had no place in their heart for a potential slaughter, and lifted their voices to be heard. Two apprentices, Littlepaw and Willowpaw, found themselves mortified as a few cats called their names. They looked to their mentors nervously, as if hoping that they would protect them.

There was no need. Rising above the few scattered calls of young cats, over half the clan began calling for the exile of their deputy. "He lured Ashtree to the snakes!" Someone cried. "Look in his eyes, he feels no remorse!" Another shouted. The sound was overwhelming. When the cries quieted, Juniperstar cast a nervous look at her deputy; the dark tom was staring at his paws with an unidentifiable look on his face. "Shadewave - I'm sorry. The clan has decided." Her voice was quiet, but it was enough to shake him from his trance. Something flickered in his gaze, but he held himself tall. "You've wrongly chosen." That was it. No well-wishes or growls in his defense, just a blunt announcement of his innocence. He raked a hard stare over the gathered cats and stalked from the group, not so much a glancing back as he left the camp. Silence hung over the clan like a thick sheet, broken hesitantly by Juniperstar. "I say this now, so that StarClan may hear and approve of my choice." Her words were draped with grief, but she continued. "In the loss of Shadewave, I take Snowflight as my deputy."

The loud cries of "Snowflight!" Rang through the camp, loud with victory for the cats who believed they had rooted out the murderer.
