The Kill wrote:The night was peaceful, a cloudless sky shining with brilliant stars and a quarter moon. It was picturesque, and gave Ashtree no reason to suspect that anything would be amiss. The tom had been standing guard just outside the reeds when a familiar pelt wove between them and caught his attention. "Nice night." He meowed casually, dipping his head in greeting when the other cat looked over. They seemed to process his words, begrudging him a response after a short moment. "I suppose." They hummed, starring out across the territory. "How about we go hunting?" They suggested, almost out of the blue. Ashtree's surprise must have been obvious, because the other cat rolled their eyes and hit his side with their tail. "We won't go far, mouse-heart." Unsure if it was a tease or taunt, Ashtree let himself be led away from camp and weave through the sparse trees.
Before long, Ashtree realized where they were headed. "Hey - didn't someone say that there's been snakes around here?" He piped up, trying to bury the nervous tremor in his voice. The other cat shook off his worries with a flick of their tail and a murmur that they'd keep watch. It didn't keep the warrior from glancing uncertainly around his paws, positive that he'd find a sleek, scaled body wrapping around his legs. No slippery devil appeared, and some of Ashtree's nerves soothed themselves. "Maybe they all slithered away, back to the Dark Forest where they belong." He joked, trying to fill the silence with his quiet laughter. The sentence seemed to strike a nerve with his companion, because they paused by a pile of stones. A pile of stones that, he'd heard from a Thunderclan cat, resembled their own Snakerocks, just on a much smaller scale. It made the fur along his shoulders rise uncomfortably at the sight, but he trusted his companion's words that it was safe. Even they stood apart from the rocks, as if just to be safe. "Come here, I found something interesting." They called, their body blocking whatever it was they were looking at. Curiosity overwhelming his fear of scaly things, Ashtree slid around his companion and peered at the rocks - and stood frozen to the spot. The long, thin tail of an adder poked out from a crack in the rocks about a mouse-length, moonlight catching its scales and casting the small length of body they could see into a fatally beautiful sight. Subconsciously, Ashtree's paws began to stumble back and away from the rockpile, horror stories of cats being bitten and killed flashing across his mind. "W-we should go." He whispered urgently, the whites of his eyes showing in fear. This only made his companion sneer, their eyes glowing with malice. "Afraid of a little snake? Go on, take a closer look." They drawled, voice threatening and low. Without warning, they wove around Ashtree and gave him a shove; just enough to throw the already unsteady warrior off balance. His breath caught in his throat as his left paw slammed onto the adder's tail - a sound that instantly rose in a strangled shout as the creature awoke with a startled hiss, darting its head from inside the rocks and sinking its fangs into his leg. Desperate and horrified, Ashtree scrambled back as the adder released him. But he didn't make it far. The cat who lured him here - his murderer - stood impassively to the side as he gasped and begged, and ultimately went still.
watch out riverclan, there's a murderer in your ranks!
