but... every shoujo ai show ive watched so far has had sexualised elements. why is this? i mean i've seen yuri on ice, doukyuusei, robotica*robotics, all 3 kono danshis and theyre all gay stuff with nothing about the relationship sexualized, yet cant think of any stuff focusing around two girls in love without any sexualisation.
I've read manga where the characters were lesbian that wasn't packed full of sexualization, but there aren't really any mainstream anime like this that I've seen.

The reason is there just isn't a market for this. In Japan, most of the boys love anime is geared towards women. So all of the men areally attractive, there's always a really dramatic story, the characters are usually pretty sensitive - that's what women there like to watch. Some of them are sexual but a lot of them aren't. Basically the anime ends up like romantic chick flicks where everyone is beautiful gay men. There are a lot of manga that are not like this, plenty of manga by gay men for gay men featuring men who are more masculine exist, but anime doesn't get made of them, because what sells is the BL anime. BL =/= LGBT media really; it caters to fujoshi
Meanwhile all of the anime featuring lesbians tends to be made by men for men, so it's all pretty sexual and caters to fantasies, as this is what sells to men over there. Again, the real stuff put out for lesbians exists in manga form and some of it is really good, but they do not make anime of it because it won't sell. There isn't a big enough market of openly gay anime fans in Japan to cater to.
I do think that this is going to start changing soon. Yuri on Ice broke the mold - it's very different fromg BL anime that exists and most people would argue with me it's actually more of an anime featuring gay protagonists than a BL anime. It shows a much more realistic (and most importantly healthy) homosexual relationship and the plot doesn't revolve around their relationship drama; it's closer to the way hetero relationships are handled in non-romance anime - subtle, intertwined with the story, and not really any PDA - and I really hope its success gives other stories the potential to have exposure.
