The award Samantha receives almost daily is the "you tried" award. It is always a funny inside joke among herself and her friends, but there is certainly a much deeper, underlying meaning - this Kalon never gives up. The odds could be so strongly against her that trying would seem to be a ridiculous effort, yet she pours her all into it. There is nothing that she believes can hold her back, so although she often fails, she always makes sure to try.

Dear Diary,
Participation award. Great. Why? I tell you, I worked so hard - no. No use griping. Must keep training. Try harder. That's right. Let's do this.

I ate lunch, I went outside, drew a ring, and got my marbles. Then I spread the little ones in the middle and picked up my Lucky Marble, the golden one with the red heart. I flicked it forwards many a time before I hit them all. I still need more practice. Will practice again tomorrow.

Sorry I haven't written in awhile! I've been busy practising because the games are at the beginning of April! Just today I received a letter saying I got in! So excited. I'm sure I'll do better than last year. I've been training so much!

Oh, my. Tomorrow's the competition and I've been training harder than ever. I kept marbles with me at all times and a piece of chalk, too. I do it at school during break and at the park and at after school groups and during weekends and before and after school and on holidays! I hardly ever stop. So I do hope I win something.

Oh gosh, I was so worn out after the contest that I just fell asleep as soon as my head hit the pillow! But I have grand news. I got first place!!!!!! Really and truly, I did. I know, I couldn't believe it either.

I got the ribbon and even a shiny silver cup saying "Marbles Championships 2017: 1st Prize
