Oceanpaw paced. The Apprentice was in trouble, from eating on a hunt when she should have brought the prey to camp. It was so unfair: She was the one hunting, she needed to keep her strength up! Her punishment was to stay up all night and guard the camp. Her mentor, Foxstride, had told her that he would wake up and check on her, and if he caught her sleeping, she'd have to do it again another night.

The silver she-cat huffed and sat down by camp entrance. She gazed up at Silverpelt in the skies.
"Only a little while longer." She spoke softly to herself. "A little while longer until the sun rises, and I can be done with this."
She gazed toward the Warrior's den. The den sounded silent, save for the gently snores of the Warriors.
"Maybe... maybe I could just close my eyes a few minutes. Foxstride will never know..." She yawned.


When the sun's rays shone over camp, awakening the clan, the golden light reflected off of a crimson pool to reveal that Oceanpaw had, in fact, shut her eyes.

And she would never open them again.

Moonpaw awoke, squinting at the light that filtered into the den. She was up early again. As she got up, she couldn't help feeling something was wrong. The apprentice padded out of the den, seeing there was a silhouette of a cat laying down just out of the den, seemingly asleep. Approaching the figure, her eyes widened as she realised it was Oceanpaw, and she wasn't sleeping at all. The small she-cat's figure quivered in fear, frozen to the spot for a moment or two before racing back to the Medicine Cats' Den. "Memory!" she called for the medicine cat, her voice wavering. 'What could've happened?' she wondered, now obviously afraid.

Adderkit awoke in the nursery, amber eyes blinking softly in the darkness. His wings ruffled against the chilly breeze, before walking outside. The reek smell of blood hit him immediately and his nose scrunched in disgust.
He searched the camp to see the source, before seeing the limp body of Oceanpaw. He ran over, ears back in horror.
"What happened?" he asked Moonpaw, melancholy laced in his tone.

Stormfeather stretched, walking out of the warrior den. She stopped short at the sight that greeted her. There was a body laying there. Running over, she realized it was Oceanpaw. Looking around wildly, she noticed Adderkit. "Adderkit! What happened?"

A shout pulled the Tom from his dreamless sleep. His interest caught, Brokenflight pushed himself to his paws; it was a great effort due to his injured back legs, and the weight added by his wings didn't help, though he managed. Hobbling to the entrance of the elders' den, he squinted his eyes and peered in to the clearing. There were already a few gathered cats, and as he assumed that Stormfeather or one of the others had asked what had happened, he simply sat and listened for an explanation.
