Overview
"The" Rares List Guide was in use for over eight years on Chicken Smoothie. Over the course of time, both the values and the usage of this list changed. The effects of this guide were very prominent; users often gave advice on the Fair Trade Thread by treating the values of this guide as official values, which was never the guide's intended purpose. A discussion that started in December 2016 and continued well into 2017 brought to light many of the List's longstanding issues, and for the next two years, efforts were made to fix these issues by moving pets up/down to focus the List more on rarity rather than demand. Finally in early 2019, while users were moving the UR Foal and UR Rat, a discussion arose to edit the List with a massive overhaul. Following the January 2019 rarity calculation update, it became clear to many users that some of the pet placements on "The" Rares List Guide were incorrect (marked in red on the September List and Main List below the gap). Users, more-so now than ever, questioned the accuracy and structure of this list. In its current form, the pets on the very top of the List were said to be worth from 7,000 to 10,000 2009 rare pets. With the visible inaccuracies following the rarity changes in 2019, the community asked to start a poll to decide the fate of the Rares List.

Notes about the poll: Each user had a vote, with the ability to change their votes over a 14 day period.

What does this mean?

This list is closed to any further updates, meaning pet placements will no longer be updated. This list will be locked to avoid any further discussion on this thread, but you are still welcome to reference for trading, general information gathering, etc. if you wish to do so. As a result of this, you are free to value your pets as you choose, and work out a trade with your trading partner based on the values the two of you agree upon. You can also choose which guide you want to follow. Right now, a rarity guide based on actual numbers, a list based on rarity change dates, and a list based on demand are in the works. Per the community, locking this thread from any further updates will help emphasize that this list is not official.

Does this make "list pets" less rare/valuable? I thought my Sunjewel is worth 10,000 '09 rares..

This all depends on if a user you trade uses the same guides for trading that you do. If they use this list, they likely value the pets similarly to you! If not, it might be best to find out what the user values their pet at!

Explanation of options

NOTE: Anyone on CS is allowed to create and run their own lists, whether they are based in rarity, demand, both, or none at all. The following are other active list projects available;

These threads are allowed by staff; anyone may make a community guide with a different focus than those already created. However, no threads (including this one) are endorsed by staff, and none should be taken as law. The trading community is diversifying and this list is not the end all be all. Regardless of the outcome of this poll, there will be no enforcement of this list above any other and it is recommended that if you do not agree with this list that you move on to other projects after the conclusion of the poll. That will greatly reduce the amount of debate in this thread (or its successor) and allow those who want to work on it to do so.[/center]

1. Maintain - keep the Rares List the same but update pet values.

Nothing about the structure of the thread or the way it is run will change. Edits would be made to reflect the new rarity changes and changes in the market, but they would happen with a community poll for each move. There is a list of pets to be addressed on the first page that will be discussed (to which anyone can add any pet). This option believes that the list is salvageable in its current form and will remain an important trading guide on CS.

2. Restructure - vote on ways to majorly update, restructure or rebuild the Rares List.

The list in its current form will be updated in both pet placement and overall structure. There will be polls what to do with the foundation of the list. While a part of the list might stay the same, big things will change.

Examples: Smaller tiers and gaps (which makes pets closer in value),locking this thread and restarting/restructuring for a new start, no gaps list, community input via faster, shorter paced polls, pet movement to decrease demand influences, rarity taken more into account, etc.

However, plenty of other polls will be run if this option wins in order to decide a direct course of action based on discussion after the completion of this poll.

3. Retire - discontinue the list and stop updating it.

This option is for those who believe that the list has too many flaws for a working end to come from it. If you want to move away from the list, this is the option for you. This option does not mean the list will be deleted; it will always be available to look at it. Users who want to use this as a trading guide will be able to do so. Even if you vote this option, a list that includes rarity/demand will likely be created. Other list projects are available (listed above), and people can create new lists if they please, but this individual thread will remain inactive. No other pet move updates will be done on this thread, it will be left 100% exactly the same as is now (aside from lay-out changes to indicate that this list is no longer updated).

4. Undecided - don't know but show me the poll results

The pets listed in red are significantly out of place following their rarity increase to omg so rare from very rare during the rarity overhaul in early 2019. If using this list for trading, it is advised not to trade them off at the value that are currently listed:

It is also worth noting that as the site grows, the rarity of pets will continue to change. With the retirement of the list, no new changes will be made. Keeping this in mind, if pets currently on this “list” go up to omg so rare from very rare in the future, they will not be bolded/highlighted. If still using this list for reference in trades, users are suggested to take caution when trading pets that elevate to omg so rare going forward at the places they are currently listed. In the event that a pet on the “list” currently is elevated to omg so rare from very rare, it is possible that is out of place and should not be traded for its current placement.

At the time of the list’s retirement, there were some pets in line to be discussed and possibly moved.
Two omg so rare UR pets, the UR grapes and UR bengal, were next in like to be discussed. These two pets were placed low on the main list, and were planned to be moved up the list after the community decided to focus the list more on rarity. Since these pets are omg so rare, the community thought that they were placed too low and needed to be elevated.
The bumble bee spider was under consideration to be moved up the list. This pet sits on tier 1 of the advent list. However, it changed to very rare at the same time as other pets that are placed higher than it, so the community felt it wise to consider moving it up to better reflect its rarity.

A few pets were under consideration to be moved down the list. The hyena advent and Timberwolf, both originally released during Christmas 2008, were placed on tier 9 of the advent list, two tiers above most of the other advent dogs in their litter, who were on tier 7 since they're all about equally rare. At the time they were placed, these two dogs had more demand than the others, and were moved up. The community thought that over the years the demand had decreased, and discussions were planned to potentially move them down to sit with the rest of their litter-mates on tier 7.
The red rose dog and light leopard dog, left placed on the September list, were also potentials to be moved down. Based on when they turned very rare, in relation to other pets on the list, they were placed higher than they should have been.
The joker dog, placed below the gap on the main list, was in conversation to be moved down the list. It changed to very rare in May 2010, after other “list pets” that were placed lower. It was placed as high as it was because of its demand, and following the community decision for the list to focus more on rarity than demand, the argument was made for it to be moved down.

Some pets were also in line for discussions on whether or not to add them to the list. First up were the newer UR pets from 2017, the UR fox and UR peas. These pets are both omg so rare, and would have been placed somewhere above the gap on the main list. A poll would have been conducted to allow the community to give their input as to where they wanted to see these two pets placed. Throughout the years of the list, new UR pets were placed on the main list about 1 year following their release during the advent calendar.
The following list of pets were in line to be discussed to be added to the list based on the dates of their rarity updates (all are currently very rare). These pets went up in rarity at the same time as pets that were on the list, so the argument was made that they were equally as rare, and therefore deserved a place on the list. They are as follows:

~ White Dragon, released as a special release Nov '09, as far as I can find it was VR since rarities came out, maybe someone else can find reference to a rarity change? post comparing how hard the White Dragons were to get to Zebras Dec '09, Dec '09 Moonflight, a staff member at the time, stating White Dragons were 5 times rarer than Grey Dragons on CS, Reading through that thread there seems to be the idea that the white dragons will be re-released but not the Greys, as we know they are all re-released in the Dec 18th box so I think it's fairly safe to assume the Whites are still about 5 times as rare as the Greys unless they mean only the whites were released in future Malk litters? Does anyone actually have or know of other dragons adopted outside of Dec 18 or their original release month?
First forum post I can find mentioning it's VR rarity, Jan '10 Wayback Machine March '10. The grey dragon at the time was still only rare Wayback Machine for grey dragon March '10

~ The Grey & Red Dragons apparently turned VR at the same time as each other, in June '10

from the way people were talking in that thread, it's more like a chance of one color per month set by a staff member, and the staff member would change the color depending on the month--so e.g. are there any white malk dragons from feb 2010?? or are they all red?

but there are both red and white dragons from march 2010
