“I can’t hug you…do you know what that feels like?” His grey, stormy eyes filled to the brim with tears.

His face was frozen in agony and he shut his eyes tight to try and escape the heartache. The heartache must have stayed though, because he eventually opened his eyes once more and brought his hand up to his face to study it. He seemed to study it a lot these days. The hand was ink black up to his elbow, and through his veins, a sharp bright blue flowed. The blue sparked and jumped and was more vibrant than anything I had ever seen in my entire life; it was almost painful to look at. It was so clear it seemed like there was no skin at all between the liquid and the air. It ran hungrily, greedily, through his fingers. I knew it shouldn’t have, but it intrigued me. I knew I should have felt sad, grief-stricken even, but I didn’t. I couldn’t. Not with that gorgeous blue luring me in.

“I’m a monster.” I heard him say.

His words plunged me back into reality, but I couldn’t take my eyes off of the sleek hot glow.

“You could never be a monster,” I spoke softly, willing my eyes to look at his face, but they wouldn’t.

Before anything else could be said, the young waiter walked over carrying our coffees. I glanced up at him and smiled, finally able to take my gaze away from the neon liquid. He looked no more than 16. He seemed like a nice enough kid; however, as he got closer to our table, he tripped and sent our coffees toppling onto the carpet.

Of course, Lucian was on the floor within seconds. He was always one to do that: help out wherever he could. His favourite thing in the world was helping people. That habit was fine…until today. The young waiter smiled sheepishly and began apologizing profusely, to which Lucian quickly brushed off with a kind smile even though tears were still leaking down his face. That’s when it happened. It only took a split second. Lucian and the waiter both reached for the same cup and Lucian accidently brushed the waiter’s hand with his own. Out of his finger, a jolt of fiery blue liquid seeped into the waiter’s arm. A look of confusion crossed his face for a millisecond before he was on his back writhing in pain.

Lucian jumped onto his feet, pure terror filling his eyes. He went to cover his mouth with his hands – an action I knew was habitual for him – before he pulled away and stared at them. The blue fire was coursing through his blackened hands faster than ever. He slowly pulled them away from his face as people from the restaurant came rushing towards the boy still thrashing on the floor. I knew the young waiter would be dead within the next few minutes. I had already seen what happens when Lucian touches someone. I had seen it 14 times, and each time, the terror on Lucian’s face grew. I knew he wouldn’t be able to go on like this much longer.
He turned on his heels and sprinted out of the restaurant. I watched him go, before slowly getting up and starting towards the door he had left from. I was almost half way there before I glanced over my shoulder to see the pain fading from the boy’s face and his body go limp. I shut my eyes tight, wishing this horrible reality away, before I turned back and left.

I got outside to see Lucian sitting on the side walk with his head in his hands. I sat down next to him and went to put my hand on his shoulder before he flung himself to his feet, away from me.

“Don’t touch me,” He growled through gritted teeth.

Every muscle in his body was tense and he stood towering over me. His soft, grey eyes glittered with hatred, but I knew him well enough. Behind the sea of rage, he was terrified. He was petrified. He only saw a monster within himself, and to tell the total honest truth, it was hard for me to see past the monster. Almost impossible.

“Lucian, please,” I tried to reason with him.

I stood up slowly and held my hands out in surrender. He was scaring me, as much as I hated to admit it. He had his head facing the ground and his black ashy hair hung in front of his eyes, so I knelt down on the ground in front of him to look into his face.

“Lucian, It’s ok. You’ll be ok. I know it’s scary. I do. I know you’re scared, but we’ll find a way around this,” I told him as I searched for a hint of softness in his venomous eyes.

“Scary?!” He suddenly spat into my face. He was standing over me and it took all my might not to scramble backwards. His eyes were shining with animosity and I could hear a hysteria rising in his voice. “I can’t hold your hand anymore. I can’t kiss you anymore. I can’t hug you anymore, or cuddle with you, or watch movies and share popcorn with you anymore. I can’t go anywhere because look what happens. My hands kill anyone they touch. So one little mistake, and you’re dead. It’s happened 15 times including today. 15 little mistakes that have cost people their lives. Scary? That doesn’t even begin to describe what I’m feeling.”

He screamed into my face. His face was inches from mine, but I noticed that his hands were firmly locked in fists at his side.

“I’m sorry,” was all I said.

I was determined not to let his anger wear me down. I was determined to stick by his side until the end. Unfortunately, I guess he decided otherwise, because he stood up straight, looked me directly in the eyes and spoke. More violence then I had ever seen in him, shone in those stormy eyes.

“Don’t ever pretend to know how I feel.” Venom slid through his voice as he snarled at me.

He then turned, ash hair whipping wildly around his face, and walked away. That was the first time I ever met the villain. That was the night I became the hero. That was the night the man I loved, died. That was the night.
