Research Center Shop
Here you may buy items required for breeding and gene research. Items are in limited stock, with the stocks being updated each month. Each person may only buy a certain amount of each item at once each month. This is to prevent one person buying out the entire stock per month, not letting anyone else buy anything.

❤ Ant Breeding ❤

Here at The Vivarium Store, we've managed to create a potion that will allow you to essentially breed your ants! All you need is a standard breeding potion, two Queen ants and a batch of ant eggs. This is one of two types of breeding we do here at the Research Center.
Your Queens will be fed the potion, and the eggs will be treated with it. After a short while, your newly hatched ants will be either a hybrid of the parent Queens, or an entirely new species!
Please note that you need to own all ants and eggs that are going to be used. All potions have one use only, and each new ant outcome will be treated as a separate species by other ants. This means that you will need a Peace Treaty to put hybrids and new species together with ants of another species. They will not get along with their parent species.
When hybrids are created, some of the Queen parents' traits will be passed on, while others will not. This means that you can have a winged Queen and a wingless Queen create a wingless offspring. Having a trait in both parent Queens will increase the chances of it being passed on by the double, however, it is not a guarantee.
If you would desperately like to see an outcome between two species, but do not have the Queens or cannot acquire them, you may breed a Queen with someone else's Queen (with their permission of course). If you would like to do so, please both state that you are allowing it, either by posting or PM. The batch of offspring will be split as evenly as possible, with the person who payed for the breeding potion getting the Queen.
Breeding rules
Due to some issues arising during the breeding test phase, we had to put some rules into place.
Santa ants, Simpson ants and Cherry Blossom ants cannot breed.
For the reasoning behind this, read the FAQ further down.
All Queens used for breeding must be either in storage, or in a farm.
This means they cannot be in the Event Bank, or stored in an ant box.
Queens cannot be bred multiple times in the same post.
This means that if you are posting a breeding between, for example, a Red Fairy Queen and a Weaver Queen, you cannot post a form for a breeding with either of the Queens until the breeding has been completed and posted.
Breeding rare ants and up is limited.
Each month, each species of ants (marked Rare and up) can only be bred a certain amount of times. This is counted between all breedings posted, and not for each individual. Example: A breeding with a Unicorn Queen can only be performed, let's say, 2 times each month. If person A posts a Unicorn X Something else breeding, and person B posts another breeding with a Unicorn in it, no more Unicorn breedings can be done that month.
Breeding Limits:
Rare: 8
Very Rare: 5
Extremely Rare: 2
Hybrid ants cannot be named just anything.
Hybrids do not necessarily need to be named, but when naming an ant, the name must be related enough to the Hybrid. For example, an ant with Antlers cannot be named Dolphin ants. Dolphins typically do not have antlers, and as such, the name is too unrelated.

Colours
Ant colours are a bit more complicated when passed on through breeding. Each parent Queen will have two sets of genes, dominant or recessive, similar to how human eye and hair colours work.
When a Queen produces offspring, a dominant gene will always show if present. A Queen may have a dominant green and recessive blue gene, making a Queen green. However, if a Queen has two recessive genes of the same colour, that's the colour it will be. Having two dominant or recessive genes of different colours will either produce a colour made from blending the two, or having both colours expressed in the ant somehow, with a 50% chance of either.
Markings on ants may show recessive colours, despite the presence of a dominant colour gene.
No colours in ants are more or less dominant, as it depends on the ants genes themselves. To find out the genetic combination of a particular ant you own, you may use a DNA potion. As this potion dissolves the ant, you may want to use a worker or soldier from a Queen rather than a Queen itself.

Specific Gene Breeding

Regular breeding not giving you the results you want? We suspected as much, and as such, we offer another service. As the name might imply, with Specific Gene Breeding, you can choose which genes you want the offspring to have!
Specific Gene Breeding does come with a downside, however. For this specific breeding, you will need one set of Genetic Test Tubes, an ant egg batch, and two DNA potions. This means that you will need two ants to dissolve, making the use of Queens impractical. To extract the genes and use specific ones, an ant needs to be dissolved into a genetic sludge, which is then analyzed, processed and then used to treat a batch of ant eggs.
Each batch will guarantee a Queen, but with an unknown number of workers, soldiers and tiny ants. The batches of ants created will be based on the genes of the ants used, which means that workers, soldiers and tiny ants can yield different genes than if a Queen was used.
All the rules for regular breeding apply, with the exception of the "Breeding in the same post" rule. Ants used CAN be in a farm, but the ants will be removed from the farm they're in.
Genes that can be passed on include markings, special extra bodyparts and colours.
When ordering a breeding, the more specific you are, the better. In case of inconsistencies or non-specified choices, the genetic outcomes will be randomized.
To order, use this form:

Questions and Answers
Why is there a limit on breeding Rare ants?
Ants being rare is something special, and having hybrids consisting only of rare combinations makes them less special. Putting a limit on the rare breedings will hopefully cause more people to breed common ants. They can yield just as interesting combinations as any rare ants!
Why can't I breed my Queen several times at once/in one post?
This is simply to prevent your Queen from being overworked. It takes energy and time for a Queen to put its genes in an ant egg batch, and the process can be tiring for the staff overlooking the breeding as well. If a Queen is forced to breed several times in a short time span, they risk dying from exhaustion, dehydration or starvation.
Why can some ants not breed?
As for Santa ants and Simpson ants, it's because of their connection to real characters. We deem it disrespectful to the characters and the spirit of them, and as such, we refrain from breeding them.
Cherry Blossom ants cannot be bred because of their special status. They are a special species of ants made specifically for the staff member of our store, in this case fuiuki.
Do you have a question not answered here? Ask it, and it shall be added to the list!
