Where do you cosplay? At home (never really go anywhere XD)
Do you buy your costumes, or make them yourself? So far, only cosplayed as characters I can buy the outfits of in-stores
What was your first costume? Cosplayed at my persona, Gray, on Halloween. I was called a vampire multiple times XD
What is your favorite costume that you've done? Gray because holy wow I love that trench coat
What is your favorite costume that you've seen someone else do? Once saw a guy dressed up as a 8ft inflatable t-rex I saw an amazing Rose Quartz cosplay awhile back, and a really cool Jasper one. They're tied for my favorites ;o;

So I'm still fairly new to cosplaying, but I'm trying to tackle a more complicated costume. I say "more complicated" because she's the one character I have that I can't buy the outfit of in stores- and I have zero talent when it comes to sewing, etc.

I was gonna take a different approach and try dyeing some clothes the right colors, rather than making the outfit entirely myself. Problem is, I'm not sure if its actually possible to dye clothes like this? XD I'd need to dye her hoodie in sections so the arms, torso and hood are all different colors. Then there's the matter of her hat needing to be different colors as well...

So, just a question for you guys more experienced with making your own costumes: is it possible to dye clothes in sections (not tie dye but something more along the lines of this)? And is it possible to dye hats?

@Dovepawlover,
/Personally/ if I wasn't going to made it from scratch, I would probably deconstruct a white hoodie (ie. take off the sleeves,hood etc.), dye them separately and then re-attach them. When I dye, I like to use the dye that you put in the washing machine. In my experience, it sticks better and runs less than dip-dying. With dip dying, I'd be afraid of the colors running into each other and I've found that some areas end up more concentrated than others/the color is uneven. As far as the hat, if you're not going to sew it yourself, I'd probably use fabric paint but to be honest, I don't really like how stiff and heavy it feels or makes the fabric look. Even fabric paint that claims it dries soft on clothes. (You can dye hats but with the colored sections on the one you linked to, it would be very hard.)
I'd really recommend trying to sew! If you don't want to start off with a big project, I'd recommend just sewing pieces of pre-made clothes together. There are plenty of tutorials on Youtube you can watch and I'm thinking of starting a sewing channel so if you have any specific tutorials you want and cannot find, I will certainly make one.
Also, I know Lazy Oaf and UNIF had jackets/hats similar to the one you're trying to make so you might want to check their websites out too.
Good luck :-)

On a coincidental similar note, I am going to a Valentines social and it has a Noah's ark theme, i.e. We are going to dress up as animals and have a boat party.

Instead of a generic animal, I decided to be a little creative and dress up as Chat Noir. It's coming along, the main problems are how to attach his jingle bell and getting a staff. Also a ring might be good. Any ideas/suggestions?

Since the bell is so huge, I'd suggest putting it on a black ribbon and wearing it like a necklace because attaching it directly to the costume may tear it. I've also seen people attach the bell to the front zipper so, if you're adding a front zipper, that would probably work. I'd imagine the bell might pull the zipper down though so I'd try safteypining the zipper up or something. For the staff, I'd buy a piece of pvc pipe from a hardware store and spray paint it.

when I did chat noir, (admittedly a magical girl version but still) I put the bell on a ribbon
for the ring I bought from a dollar store that was roughly the right shape and built the details out of air dry clay before painting that up.

Where do you cosplay? I generally cosplay at home and at a nearby annual anime convention
Do you buy your costumes, or make them yourself? Sometimes I will buy entire or parts of costumes from online sellers, but in case of stuff like Homestuck I do them myself.
What was your first costume? Vriska Serket on Halloween 2012. I thought it was very amateur but my family and people who I encountered liked it.
What is your favorite costume that you've done? Vriska.
What is your favorite costume that you've seen someone else do? This Anivia from League of Legends cosplay I found when I googled "Anivia cosplay"

I don't really do cosplaying that much but I plan on making at least two cosplays this year out of total of four ideas. Some stuff I had in mind were: Pearl from Steven Universe, Rose Lalonde, a cat partial fursuit, and a crossplay of a musician.
