Cats padded out of their dens as Orchidpaw and Ghostkit became
increasingly frantic to find Grasskit. The Clan searched until sunhigh
to find the missing kit. Towards the middle of the day, a RiverClan
patrol approached a ThunderClan patrol.

"We found this little one washed up on our shores," one cat said. "I'm
sorry."

The patrol took in the limp body of Grasskit, and thanked the other
cats. They then took him home to bury him.

"ThunderClan," started Graystar, "we have--"

"You killed him!" shouted a cat from the crowd. "You did it! I know
you did! You killed Grasskit, and Lonepaw, and tried to kill Burningkit!"

Soon, the whole Clan seemed to rise against Graystar. Instead of
panicking, Graystar sighed. She knew that she wasn't welcome in her
birth Clan any longer. "Fine," she said. "Fawnleap will be the next leader."
With that, she turned tail and left the Clan. Instead of giving up her nine
lives, she kept them out of spite. She became a loner, hoping to one day
return to her birth Clan.

"As leader," said Fawnleap, taking the place of Graystar, "Hawkwing will
be my deputy." She was surprised at the turn of events. She hoped to be
a good leader. "I will go to the Moonstone tonight, and recieve my nine
lives."

Later that night, Fawnleap took a patrol to the Moonstone. There, she
got no response, and when she awoke, knew that StarClan hadn't accepted
her. She was on her own.

You have chased out your own leader, an innocent cat! Hurry ThunderClan,
before it's too late.

It was late afternoon, and the Clan was still shaken after the events of
the day before.

"Mistypelt will lead a hunting patrol," said Fawnstar after calling a Clan
meeting. "She will take at least two other cats with her for safety."

Despite believing that the killer--Graystar--had been banished, the Clan
was still wary, and no one argued against the safety measure.

"Alright," said Mistypelt, calling two of her friends to go hunt with her.

The three cats wandered into the forest, and then split up, believing that
they would catch more prey that way. However, Mistypelt would never
be seen again--alive.

"It's funny how you keep thinking that I'm gone," said the killer, emerging
from the brush to the shock of Mistypelt. "You'll never guess who I am at
this point."

"I can still kill you!" yowled Mistypelt, leaping forward. The other cat
jumped out of the way and twisted, clawing at Mistypelt. Though barely
a scratch, it was enough to break her momentum and in a moment, she
was on the ground, bleeding out after the killer had bitten her in the neck.
Her last thoughts were, I--no we--were so blind.

ThunderClan, your killer is smarter than you could have thought, and is
getting rid of you, one by one! Catch the killer quickly, or you will not
have anyone to catch them with.

Burningkit lay in her nest quietly. She hadn't done much since that first day, the Murderer's attempt to kill her. She felt generally rather blank, but no Medicine Cat came to treat her shock. She thought back, trying to remember anything about the killer, that first night. She sighed and sat back down, trying not to notice the empty nest near her. She could imagine Grasskit's snores, as if he was still there.
