Four months.
It had been four months since Marlon's birthday. Four months since his father had taken ill. Four months since his brother's assassination. The castle had never felt so dull.
Prince Marlon of Enceirelle was once an adventurous boy. He would once creep out his window in the calm depths of the night to explore the world beyond the palace gates. He would run through the forest to catch fireflies and climb apple trees to watch the silhouettes of bats against the cold night sky. He would make fishing poles and bows and lie in waiting beneath the canopy of stars for hours only to feel the thrill of the hunt, the exhilaration of adrenaline coursing through his thin-framed body. He would swing from branches and leap from tree to tree, and laugh and smile and live. But that was when Aaron was still alive.
The mysterious murder of his brother had shaken Marlon to his core, and everything from there out escaped, filling him with a bleak, lonely emptiness. They had never found the killer. It was all his fault. He was there when it happened, but it was all such a blur that he had no recollection whatsoever of what he had supposedly seen. Depression overtook him. He never left his room anymore. But tonight was the annual ball. He would have to show himself. His father wouldn't be attending due to his condition, so Marlon would be speaking in his place.
The hours melted away, and soon Marlon found himself reluctantly traipsing down the hall to the ballroom's entrance. A small crowd of servants made way, bowing as he glided through the door. The casual banter and sounds of footsteps quickly died down, and the pianist improvised an ending in the middle of a sonata.
Thoughtlessly, Marlon began his speech, thanking the guests for coming and promising a prosperous year before them. After waving to signal that the resumption of conversation was now appropriate, he made his way down one of the twin grand staircases lining the sides of the ballroom. Several guests bowed at his arrival, but he hardly acknowledged them. He headed to the side of the room, curtly greeting those who he unfortunately happened to cross paths with.
Before long, a throng of girls as well as a few men had encircled him. They all spoke at once, and Marlon didn’t even make an attempt to understand what any one person was saying. That was, until one girl who seemed to stand out from the rest approached him. At first, he couldn’t quite place anything out of the ordinary about her other than that she was more than a bit tipsy, but soon it hit him.
He didn’t say anything to draw suspicion at first, as he was unsure if his theory was correct. So, taking her hand, he led the woman away from the crowd, much to the disappointment of the others who had waited a whole year to meet him.
“Heyyy…” the girl slurred, swaying on what Marlon could only assume were high heels hidden under her dress.
“Miss,” he started slowly suppressing a grimace at the gross attempt at a quick conversation starter about to leave his mouth, “You are… quite striking.”
“Thanks,” More swaying. “You’re not ssso bad lookin’ yourself.”
Nervously laughing, Marlon wiped his sweaty palms against his jeans. “What is your name?”
“You can call me,” she drunkenly laughed, “Anytime.”
“Right.” Marlon felt blood beginning to rush to his face.
“You… You think I’m cute. I can see what’s goin’ on in all your face-y areasss."
“Yes, you do look very lovel-“
“Hey, hey prince. Prince Marlon. I’m gonna tell you a secret.”
“Okay…”
“I like, like you.”
Marlon stumbled backwards, eyes wide. He had heard that phrase before. He had seen this scene before. He had lived this moment before. Memories flooded over to him like water through a broken dam.
”I like, like you.”
“Y-you do?” Aaron’s face burned bright red.
“Oh, yes, very much so. I like you this much.” The woman pulled out a concealed object from her dress. Aaron’s eyes grew wide.
“What? M-Marlon! Ru-” He was cut off before he could finish his last dying sentence.

"You do?" Marlon falsely inquired, anxiety clear in his voice, before surging forward and reaching into the folds of the woman's gown to pull out a a pistol from her clasped hands. "You..." he snarled. "You killed my brother. You were about to kill me! Guards!"
The pianist stopped on a sudden flat note and all conversation in the room halted. The woman, suddenly free of her drunken stupor, bolted for the door. Armed men rushed at her, tackling the murderer and holding weapons to her chest.
"Don't move, or you die."
"Come, Your Majesty." A guard quietly herded Marlon to the ballrom's exit.
"She killed Aaron." he stated, dazed.
"What?"
"She killed Aaron and she was going to kill me too." Marlon's eyes stared a thousand meters into space.
The guard stumbled on his words. "We will... We will speak with His Highness. Please get some rest." He led Marlon to one of the castle's many basement saferooms.
Marlon, locked alone in the room, had no choice but to lay down on the pasty white bed in the corner of the room, and soon sleep washed over him like high tide at midnight.
When he awoke at what presumably was the next morning, Marlon found his advisor waiting for him outside the room.
"Please come in."
"Your Majesty," Robert bowed before continuing, "We have successfully apprehended what we can only believe is an assassin, sent to kill you."
"I... She... Aaron. She killed Aaron."
"Yes, we have discovered. I am terribly sorry, Your Majesty. However, we have also found two vials on the assassin's person; one containing bacteria of the exact kind plaguing your father, the other containing a cure. Our scientists have already replicated both substances and confirmed this. Your father is currently in healing."
"You mean to say that he's going to be alright?" Marlon's voice shook.
"Yes, that is correct."
"Thank you. Thank you so much." His face covered in joy-induced tears, Marlon looked away, embarrassed to be seen in his current state.
"I will leave you for now, please let the guards outside know if you would like to leave. The castle is in a secure state now."
Nodding, Marlon watched as Robert left before wiping his tears on the sleeve of his suit that he was still wearing from the night before. His brother's murderer had been captured. His father was going to survive. And he was happy. For the first time in four whole months, Marlon was truly happy. And he smiled.

A/N: i'm sorry the ending is so rushed, but i just don't have the motivation to fix it. ):

Aamera
"Aamera, wait up!" Carson bellowed as I crossed the intersection between Fallpark Lane and Wilson Avenue. The sound of his rapid footsteps gradually grew louder as he drew nearer. Looking over my shoulder as I jaywalked the lonely pavement, I noticed a look of determination in his eyes, a stark contrast against his otherwise soft face.
"You, uh, you dropped your..." he panted, holding out a slightly crumpled sheet of paper in his hand, "Your War in Afghanistan notes."
"Oh, thanks!" I smiled, embarrassed. Taking the notes and putting them in my knapsack, I looked back up to find him staring at me. He looked away, and I didn't comment.
As I continued on to my cul-de-sac down the road, he awkwardly fell in step with me, silently by my side. We were neighbors, sure, but we had never really talked. It wasn't that we didn't get along, he was a very sweet boy and I liked to think of myself as quite kind as well, but we didn't share any interests. He was into history, specifically the 1950-2050 era, while I found enjoyment in the arts and sports.
The silence grew more and more painful by the second, and I racked my brain for anything to say to make the moment less uncomfortable.
"So," I started slowly, unsure of myself and what I was saying, "You like history, right?" What a great thing to say, I silently reprimanded myself. Now he'd be talking for hours.
"Yeah!" Carson's face lit up as he looked back up at me. "I know everything! Quiz me!"
"Okay..." I slowly replied. "Umm, well, who was... Er-" The thing was, I didn't know anything about history. Hopefully he'd fill in the conversation for me, as he probably often did, judging by his current demeanor.
"Right, sorry, you're an art and music person," he shook his head, relaxing his discussion speed to a more appropriate velocity before continuing, "You know Elvis?"
"The name is familiar. I'm more into recent old-people music, not old-old music. I think I've heard of him though. Him, right?"
"Yeah, he's a guy." Carson's pace faltered for a moment as we approached my house, but I brushed it off with a quick disregarding wave, suddenly intrigued in what he was saying. "Oh, okay. Uh, anyway, he was really popular a-at his time. I think, um, people called him, like, a king or something."
"Nice!" There was my default reaction for when I couldn't think of a noteworthy response.
"Yeah." A momentary pause. "Uhm, would it be weird if, uh," he sat down on the curb lining the cul-de-sac. "What if I said, nevermind." He buried his face in his hands.
Me never being a very touchy-feely person, I didn't quite pull his hands away, but I prodded him in the side with my elbow. "What is it?"
He glanced up at me. "This is really weird but, um, you have Elvis Presley eyes. I would know."
"What?"
His face reddened into a bright, blossom-y salmon color. He said nothing.
"How do... Why, uh, what?" I was absolutely stupefied. All the picture books and online images in the world, or at least the publicly visible world, has been completely destroyed during Vandelow's reign in World War IV. There was no way he could possibly know how someone from a pre-WWIII era looked.
"I..." His palms were visibly saturated, sweating a glossy sheen over themselves.
Suddenly, before I could offer any form of physical protest or even say something, he leaned forward and pulled me into a kiss. Shocked, my body jerked away, but I caught myself in time to keep my face where it was. By no means did I like Carson. Today was the first day I'd ever actually talked to him. But I pitied the kid. He was always walking by himself, talking to himself, listening to himself. He didn't have many social connections. Probably about two friends. Poor kid. So yes, when he kissed me, I kissed back, but it was a pity kiss. Nothing more. Absolutely nothing. At all. Whatsoever.
Probably.

Carson
Stupid, stupid, stupid. What am I doing? What was I thinking? I could feel the heat radiating from my cheeks to her smooth skin as we kissed. I could feel her glare burning into my closed eyelids, staring me down, analyzing, decoding... But no resistance? Strange. I couldn't take any chances, however. I abruptly broke off from her, slung my knapsack over my shoulder, and made a mad dash to my decrepit old house before her instincts that would undoubtedly tell her to follow me kicked in.
Slamming the storm door closed the moment I stepped onto the welcome mat, I slid down, down to the floor, through the floor, into my grave. That was far too close. Why did I do that? But I knew the answer. You liiiiiike her. Well, obviously. Shut up. Stop talking to yourself, that's weird. Okay.
Dropping my knapsack in the corner of the foyer by a heating vent, I started down the basement stairs to clear my mind. Photographs of my family lined the left wall, the railing owning the space on the right. But behind the frames, we had a secret.
As I reached the ground after cautiously leaping over the final creaky step, I looked to the door at my right. Three alphanumerical locks hugged the knob, completely obscuring it.
P-r-e-s-l-e-y-1-9
C-a-o-i-r-h-e-1-3
M-e-i-r-f-i-e-l-d-7
The last names of my family's ancestors, and the number of generations between ours and theirs. The only generations whose photos had survived WWIV.
I stepped into the musty room, no larger than a one-car garage, and quietly shut the door behind me, which sent up a plethora of dust into the air. Sunlight lazily glinted in through a dirty and rusty-framed window in the corner of the room. Just enough to see.
Making my way over several old chests to a photobook on a tall pinewood shelf in the corner of the room, I tried not to cough up the soot threatening to give me lung poisoning. I pushed away records of my family's slow but steady financial degression and a two-inch thick packet labelled simply "cloning" on its cover, then pulled the photobook to myself and flipped to the seventh page.
"Soon," I breathed, eyes focused on the page's sole image, a high-definition photo of none other than Elvis Presley himself. "All good things to those who wait."
