As they write, they of course, eat their favourite fruit, thr strawberry. That is why people

The Melancholy Manifestation of an Old Dream

Michi plucked the polished piece of oval wood from the counter top and grabbed the needle, which he'd trapped between his teeth momentarily. He sent the thread through the needle and then through the little hole in the back of the wood, attaching it to the wool hat. He sat in a rocking chair, as always, and pushed his foot against the counter to rock himself as he worked. He hummed a tune from a long time ago, something most young folk couldn't recognize. If he wasn't described more thoroughly you might think him an old man, but he was only of the ripe age of twenty-two.

His hair was curled and he dyed it an unnatural green. His eyes were piercingly unique, not in color but in the way they could affect people's moods. His smile was fresh, but sadly it never betrayed his internal emotions. His skin was soft and light, save for his cheeks which were always bright red as if he were blushing. He was clean shaven, and on his crooked nose rested his rectangular prescription glasses. He wore graphic t-shirts (one hundred percent cotton, of course) with stupid sayings on them that only he could find amusing. He usually wore dark jeans, which were sometimes ripped, and never failed to appear in his leather shoes, worn over many years but never replaced.

The shop where he spent most of his days (like this one, for example) rested on the corner of a tourist-infested town in Canada. It was built from reclaimed wood and looked out of place amongst the stucco and brick buildings it was surrounded by. Most people only ever entered the store once or twice in their lifetime, but most treated the place like their childhood home and felt confused when they found themselves thinking about the place ten years later.

The interior of the building had a habit of being constantly more pleasant than the weather outside. When it snowed outside, inside was welcoming like an old friend's living room, and it smelled of cinnamon and sweets. When the summer heat outside was sweltering, it was an oasis of refreshing cool and smelled of lilac. Modern design fit nicely with Michi's bizarre picks of antique decorations, and the floor, a stained concrete, made music with customer's shoes.

That's what Michi hated about it. The environment was too inviting, like customers would only come to his store for the experience. Buy something, won't you? Anything, please! But he didn't really mean "anything", either. Vendors loved Michi, and Michi accepted them out of necessity. The store wouldn't survive without them. They sold caramels and fudge for the bored children that were dragged by their parents for errands or travel. Trinkets and jewelry, brand new, designed to look vintage, were sold frequently to the young and the fashionable.

What no one realized was that fashion was Michi's specialty, his career. He sold hats, each handmade, with his very own golden embroidered strawberry logo imprinted into them. He treated each creation as a delicate piece of art, each customer as a careful and wise critic. But no one would wear hats anymore, besides baseball caps and beanies, which never found a place in his heart. He had a soul for the 1920's, where parties didn't die and money was tossed around like it was nothing. That's why his expensive, high-quality dress hats would never make him more than a modest fortune. But he loved it. He always had.

Why he loved hats, he could not tell you. But he was a fanatic. He insisted on real mink for the fur hats and pure leather for most of the others. Not a single synthetic fiber found a way into his store, unless a vendor was willing to pay extra.
It disgusted Michi.
I make the hats. he would say. Why don't you like the hats?

Personality

Michi seems to always find excuses to be grumpy. Usually, these excuses relate somehow to him feeling underappreciated. Being average at most things and exemplary at things that don't matter to most people, Michi's talents are often cast aside. Rather than letting people's perceptions of him make him submissive, Michi has become a polar opposite; he's loud, narcissistic, and snarky. He believes that if he pretends like he's proud of himself, he actually will be, but he's riddled with insecurities instead. Michi has thoroughly explored ways to improve himself, ways to make him noticed and ways to get people to like him. Many of his explorations have lead him into philosophical discoveries, none of which he devoutly follows. He likes to take pieces and parts of these philosophies and make them his own, inventing a set of morals and beliefs for himself. As these are deeply personal things, he usually chooses not to talk about them out loud, but if he were to share, he might find that people would take him for a much more interesting person.

The Strawberry

In high school, Michi took a sewing class. He was made fun of it, as sewing was a "feminine" class, but then again, so was Michi. He signed up for the class on a whim, but it wound up his favorite class. The teacher was a strict old lady that, quite frankly, he despised, but she always graded his work fairly and was able to offer critique. The final for the class was very loose-ended. One had to sew a high quality piece of work, but it didn't matter whether the finished product was a pair of pants or a stuffed animal. Michi chose to make a hat. He hastily picked a pattern at the end of class and left without starting the project. His friends found it hilarious to joke with Michi that his rosy cheeks were the color of strawberries, so they snuck into the class and replaced his hat pattern with one for a strawberry plushie. They figured he'd notice immediately, have a good laugh, and find his hat pattern again, but the next day they found that Michi had gotten no sleep studying for the calculus final that morning. Braindead by the time he got to sewing class, Michi was oblivious to the switched pattern, and working efficiently, finished the entire piece in one class. He was confused by the finished product, but then realized what had happened. Since he'd already told the teacher he was going to make a hat, he placed the strawberry on his head and presented it as such. He got a high B on the project. Afterwords, the strawberry became a signature article of clothing of Michi's and he wears it often in his shop ever since discovering he gets more sales wearing it than not.

History

Michi has lived in the same Canadian city his entire life. He likes that the faces of the city are constantly changing, but the lack of city natives means that he's treated as a tourist, even though he's home.

He grew up with a single father, who genuinely cared about him but who also never put in an adequate amount of time with him. Life was hard on his father, supporting the both of them as a mechanic. But they made it work. As such, Michi lived a comfortable life, but one without much excess luxury. His house had more character than financial value, and he rarely left it other than to go to school. Most of his and his father's meals were handmade, which was cheaper and though more effort, were worth the delicious taste.

Michi's extended family are a gentle folk, but get riled up on one subject: their relation to the American Civil War, in which their family members were Union soldiers. He finds it a bit silly as a Canadian to beam at such a thing, but it's an important part of his family history. Though, of course, he never met any of his Union soldier ancestors, he's been able to attend several memorial services in America as a relative. As these trips to America are the only trips he goes on, he treasures them and enjoys the familiar yet unique landscapes of America. In the future, Michi would like to travel more.

Hobbies

Geocaching -
Geocaching is an activity where one explores the world in search for little prizes that other people leave. Michi has an app on his phone to track where each prize is located. He's actually based several of his vacations around the hobby. As many hiding spots rest in a forest, Michi has familiarized himself with how to navigate and survive in one. Most of the prizes are small, useless trinkets, but once Michi found a thousand American dollars! As it is customary to leave a prize for the next person to find, Michi is often found carrying around or purchasing knickknacks at the local toy store.

Fishing -
To Michi, the experience of fishing speaks for itself. It's quite relaxing, almost nurturing to the mind. He eats all of the fish he catches (unless, of course, he deems them too small), and so is constantly on the hunt for the best fishing spots for his favorite fish to eat! Unlike geocaching, which Michi believes is a solitary activity, he loves inviting friends and family to fish. From his (little) experience in psychology, Michi finds the activity ideal for a small group because it doesn't force conversation but is lends itself to deep thoughts and talk.

The Nickname

So, why is Michi called "Michi"? Why not Marcell, which to many peers is a much more unique and respectable name? It's frustrating, almost, to some. Especially since there isn't really a cut-and-dry answer. Michi just... prefers being called Michi. He thinks it's cute, and having a short and sweet name makes it convenient to get his attention. "Michi" is also a more open-ended name; it's origins are both German and Japanese, and is used by both males and females. Michi likes this, because although he expects his close friends and family to have a good picture of his character, he far prefers strangers and acquaintances to know as little about him as possible.

The End (Thank You!)

Thank you for reading my form! <3 I enjoyed making it, so that's what matters, right?
I hope you might visit Michi's store again, but if not, I hope you enjoyed the visit!
