much larger, reaching the average person's shoulder. Usually found
in small packs - parents and cubs, with yearlings or a grandparent -
altean jackals build their dens where the meadows and forests meet,
and prey mostly on small rodents or birds.

- Altean Jackals existed in a time before Emperor Zarkon's tyrannical reign over the universe, and before he and his armies destroyed the planet Altea; more than 10,000 years ago.
These alien canines thrive in the juniberry fields of the planet. They are omnivorous, feeding mostly on grasses, berries, or small rodents and birds. Altean jackals help keeps the fields alive. The juniberry flowers that grow there couldn't thrive without the magical life force of all altean creatures, and they coexist with anything they may take from the world - whatever they take in materials they give back in energy(formally referred to as 'quintessence', so the planet doesn't die.
Over the years, the Jackals have become very close with the Altean people. While not so common around commoners - as they do take up a bit of space - they have been known to take a liking to the royal family, living in the castle as pets and even battling alongside warriors and knights. They make great companions for just about anyone who can care for them, and are fiercely loyal. The Altean residents tend to be very respectful of life, so it's very easy for these creatures to live in harmony with just about anyone who does the same.
These Jackals communicate in both small barks / chirps, but if incredibly close with someone or something can even form mental bonds strong enough to allow telepathic communication. This ability is most commonly used to communicate with the planet itself, or humanoid companions. Like the Altean people, these creatures have highly extensive lifespans that can be thousands of years; however, sickness or physical injury can kill just as easily with these creatures as with any other. Their use of quintessence helps immensely with keeping them healthy.
At this point in time, Altea is the only planet the jackals inhabit, and it is uncertain whether or not they will expand to other planets in the future.
