Blazepaw slipped into the nursery, following the terrifying sounds she'd heard. Snowkit followed, and the apprentice didn't dare turn to see her face. The fire lit up the scene before her, spitting their embers onto the stone. She stayed at the entrance, numbness creeping into her. In of her  Greypetal lay on the stone, eyes half open. There was evidence of the claws that tore her throat. There was no movement, and in her mind, the sound of the fire went quiet. It went stiller an quieter until it was it was unbearable, and she felt hot tears stream down her face. Snowkit walked over to her mother, her face impossible to read. Blazepaw's mouth was open in a silent scream, wishing she could have helped. Wishing it was her. The kitten mewed, a whisper, her head dipped. "Mama?"
And Blazepaw's heart broke.
