I'm looking at cosplaying a crystal gem, and have cosplayed ponies and even princess unikitty in the past, so yeah, a lot of cosplay for me especially when it comes to adapting nonhuman cosplays to be cosplayed by a human, is trying to match colours and styles and if a character would wear that.

I've gone as obscue characters to cons and cosplay meets and still have a great time, even if the costume is mostly made from stuff in my wardrobe.

@Rainpelt Thanks

Yeah, that is the problem. I probably should have stated it clearer. I don't want to get too deep into gender politics but I do feel it is harder for males to cosplay as females than vice versa. I feel as though people will come to incorrect conclusions on my sexuality or gender identity if I was to cross-play, and gender bending also poses problems because most female outfits seem to be designed with female curves in mind. Unless it's some sort of plate armour like Pharah from Overwatch. I'm not sure how to adapt them without seeming homosexual or trans (I am not saying anything is wrong with that, other than the fact that it would be untrue)

@Rainpelt, @Bleakverse
I guess that makes some kind of sense with the trying to fit personality based clothes. I'll probably try to brainstorm what suits the character.

One more question, when you guys cosplay, do you usually try to act the part of your character?

(P.S. my favourite Marvel Characters would probably be Spiderman and Squirrel Girl)

I do try a little bit, I especially tried with my Evie cosplay. But NZ cosplay culture is more about having fun in costume rather than acting the part.
There are things like skits as part of competitions, and there is also CosPLAY theatre. where you arrange a skit and prefrom and stuff.
but acting in character isn't always important

I'll agree with you there, feminine design is definitely harder to transfer into male. It's much easier to introduce curves than it is to remove them, and I feel like male gender perception is definitely harsher in our society. I've had straight male friends cross-play, but if you're uncomfortable with it there's certainly nothing that says you have to, you just have to get creative (which tends to create unique and super amazing cosplays anyway, haha). If you need any help with that I'd be happy to be there to bounce ideas off of for gijinkas or gender bending, anything like that c: Found cosplays are some of my favorites to put together, Goodwill is a gold mine, haha.

Depends on the character, as far as acting the part goes. If there's a character I identify well with, then I definitely do get into it, and for things like photoshoots and meet-ups and such, I love improving with others. It's so much fun. But I don't necessarily make myself stay in the role though, I don't make it a requirement of myself, and I don't always expect it from others. I'll talk to people as myself and go in and out character.

yessss, both fantastic characters, squirrel girl doesn't get enough love

On the subject of acting in character in cosplay, while it's not required by any means, I've found that the extra bit of immersion can be an incredibly fun way to bond with fellow fandom members or cosplayers. Me and many of the people I know have had some of the funniest experiences at cons when having mini, two minute in character roleplays before pictures and whatnot. I myself tend to go all out with it, this year for example I obtained a full Adolescence of Utena duelist uniform for Utena Tenjou and I intend to debut it at a local convention's annual ball, waltzing with chicks for a night as an allusion to my character's dance scene with Anthy Himemiya. The stunning animation in that scene is the main reason I bought the cosplay, and I've been practicing dance steps in preparation for a few months (not that it's helped much as I'm a total clutz, but it's a rather nice experience as I would likely never have thought to even consider ball room dance steps so it's been a learning experience atleast).

As for male to female cosplay though, I've helped a number of male friends out with the tricky illusion and let me say, layering bras, fake eyelashes, and a touch of subtle contouring works wonders! And fear not, I don't believe most people look too deeply into gender roles at conventions, it's a very open and understanding environment amongst cosplayers! I can say that as far as most are concerned, just getting a picture is enough to satisfy, rather then delving into the sexuality or gender identity of the wearer of a cool costume.

Yeah, playing the part sounds kinda fun. I probably wouldn't do it all day if i was to do it. I do like acting (even though i haven't done much real acting). I would say a lot of characters I like are quite distant from my own personality, but that's alright. I will probably get comfortable cosplaying in general before I try a Theater thing.

YES!! Weirdly I first heard about her because Peter himself casually mentioned her in conversation

      haha personally I dont act the part unless its for a photo or someone wants me to do something that the character does. idk, acting like a cartoon character or even in some cases an animal thats been transformed into a human costume kind of makes me uncomfortable and sometimes its immature, especially with the homestuck community. however, i've been in group where we do things the characters do, like their little saying or catchphrase or something, you know?

      i just got back from ohayocon!! it was a blast. my group danced in front of lots of people!

When I cosplayed elsa I did sing a little bit for some of the kids,
But I do try and do a bit of research while preparing to get into costume, like rewatching whatever movie or show they are from to get some of the character mannerisms down. When I cosplayed Honey from OHSHC, I referred to the other cosplayers in my group how Honey did in the show.

If I'm not going to act like the character I'm cosplaying, I try to play up one part of their personality/overuse their catchphrase. I get a kick out of it. I like method acting.

Right now I'm working on a bunch of on-going cosplay projects. For a convention in March, I'm planning on going as a Team Skull Grunt (from Pokemon SunMoon), Janet Snakehole (Parks and Recreation), and Tharja (Fire Embelm: Awakening). Then, I'm working on Cheshire (Young Justice), and Hypodermic Sally (American Horror Story: Hotel) for a /different/ convention.
I'm also working on Odin Dark (Fire Emblem: Fates) for my friend who I won't be seeing until the night before the convention after I've just done an 11 hour drive so there's no time to really fix anything and it's an extremely elaborate costume and I'm really stressed about it.
The only thing I'm really stuck on is Tharja. She has that bodysuit and I'm not quit sure where I can buy one. Anyone with experience? I don't have a serger at home so I'd have to sew it at school if I made it myself and it's honestly probably the same price to buy it so why waste my time.

Where do you cosplay? My school campus!
Do you buy your costumes, or make them yourself? Make them myself, but buy certain components.
What was your first costume? A really crappy lucario made out of my clothes and paper.
What is your favorite costume that you've done? Probably my Dipper cosplay, that was super fun!
What is your favorite costume that you've seen someone else do? Not sure I've seen some awesome ones...
