"I.... love... yo-"

The last words my best friend ever spoke to me or at all. His last words were to me. Right there on spot is the first time I cried in who knows how long. I didn't believe it. I couldn't. My best friend was gone and I wasn't able to say a simple thing right back to him. Tell him I still truly cared for him.. I held him close in my arms, repeating the simple saying over and over until I was asked by a doctor to politely go.

The worst part is that the death of my best friend was my fault. Everyone tells me not to blame myself but I just can't help it. I hate myself so much for what I did. I wish what happened to my best friend happened to me instead.

Originally it was just supposed to be a fun night out with some friends. A small little party with some close friends, seeing as we normally didn't have many. People never approached us to say hello, they more so stayed far away from us. So we stuck to a close friend group and all of us rarely got in fights.

I was driving that night with my best friend Max in the seat next to me. It was right after a long day of college for us both so we figured that we could use the time to just hang out, since college has had all of us busy lately. Not to mention trying to get a job was a pain in the butt for all of us. We needed a day to relax, a day to ourselves.

Well, at least a night.

My phone lit up next to me, signifying that I got a new notification. I decided to pick it up and not pay attention to anything else, casually steering the wheel in front of me. The text was from one of our friends, Alexander. She preferred to go by Ally, so I continued to call her by her birth name to annoy her anyway.

Little did I know how dangerous texting and driving was. Sure, there's stuff everywhere warning you not to text and drive, but I've never been in a crash my whole entire life even when I was on my phone.

I wasn't paying to the road in front of me when suddenly I heard panicked screams from Max and I looked up but it was too late. The last thing I heard was a big crash and blacked out nearly immediately afterwards.

I woke up in a hospital, wounds all over myself. I was a mess. I, however, had no worries about that. It was Max. Max was my worry right now. I tried to scream out for him, but my throat was very dry and nothing came out. I started to panic myself then, looking for a "help" button somewhere. There's always a button like that in a hospital, right?

Every time I moved, a wince escaped from my lips.

Before I could find it, a nurse walked in and shouted "Hallelujah!" when she saw that I was awake. "Oh my gosh, it's a miracle." She cried out, and all I could do was scratch at my throat and I believe it gave her the idea to get me some water as she nodded and walked off.

She came back a few moments later with a glass of water and I drank it as quick as I could, reliving my throat. "T-thank you," I croaked at the nurse with a slight frown. "Where's.. Max?"

The look of concern on her face made me think he died and I shot right up, but a sharp pain went through me and I cried out slightly at that. The nurse frowned, "Please, be careful. You were just in a car crash.. it's better to make sure you don't move so quickly. It'll be painful. And as for Max.. he.. doesn't look too good."

"D-Doesn't look too good?" I asked politely and she nodded. "What's that mean? Can I see him, please?"

The nurse took a second to think about my question, "I suppose you can.. just be really careful, please. We're going to get you a wheelchair and I'll take you to his room." I smiled as kindly as I could, even though how sad I felt. This was all my fault that this was happening.. I couldn't believe it.

The kind lady returned a few minutes later with a wheelchair she carefully helped me into. I thanked her as she strolled me down to Max's room. He was as pale as ever, but wide awake. He smiled slightly as he saw me get strolled in and I couldn't help but jump out of the chair, ignoring the pain completely even though I'd surely regret it later, and hugged him.

The nurse scolded me for doing that and all I could do was roll my eyes before she got me back into the chair. "God.. I'm so happy you're okay.." I was nearly crying here.. my best friend was okay, but there was cuts and bruises all over him.. all from me.

"I-I don't know if I'm okay.. but s-sure."

The words that left his mouth had me shocked as I shook my head, "you're awake, though? You've got to be alright.. right? Please, please tell me I'm right."

A soft chuckle left his mouth as he nodded. "Y-yeah, I'm alright." I sighed in relief right before the most painful moment of my life happened right before my eyes. "I just.. I want you.. to know that.." with every word, his eyes became droopier and his voice was quieter, "I...love..yo-"

Then he passed out. I started to shake my head and cry, thinking of the worst possible scenarios. I hugged him again and kept repeating the same thing back to him, "I love you too, I love you too, I love you too.." With every "I love you", my grip on him became slightly tighter.

After a moment, the doctor made his way into the room, wide-eyed. He asked what happened and I explained it in the best way I possibly could. That he just blacked out. I frowned at the doctor, a few tears still rolling down my cheeks. "Is he okay?" I asked just as the doctor went to look at him.

"No.." He said as calmly as he could and looked right at me, a sad look on his face. "It looks like the crash really impacted him.. We'll have to see if this was truly the case of his passing.. but I'm really sorry for your loss, sir."

My.. my what? There's no possible way Max died.. No, no, no..

Tears started to come flooding from my eyes once again as I dropped to the floor on my knees. The doctor asked me to leave after I calmed down a little bit and all I could do was wipe my eyes and got up with his help to leave.

My best friend was gone.. and it's all my fault.

Please just tell me this is all an awful nightmare.

"Could you.. stay with me tonight?" I looked up at Isaac shyly, a small smile on my face, as genuine as it could be, as I continued to shake with fear. "In case we.. uh, die.. I want to die with you by my side.."

"We'll be okay, Lee." He promised and embraced me with a tight hug, receiving a negative reaction from me. I hated being touched and everyone knew that, including Isaac. He jumped back realizing what he did and I just shook my head and walked forward him shakily, wrapping my arms around his waist and I buried my face in the crook of his neck. Shocked, he hugged me back with a bit of hesitation and released a sigh. "I promise.. we'll be okay."

The violent whipping of the winds outside told me otherwise. It sounded as if the house could be torn down at any moment, the windows were making sounds as if they were prepared to crack themselves. I untangled myself from Isaac and sat down on my bed, "y-yeah.. it's sure convincing we'll be alright when all of this is happening outside."

He took a seat next to me and grabbed my chin to make myself look at his face. "We will be okay. My promises are never broken now, are they? It's not a definite that there's going to be tornado. You're overreacting too much. Just because there was a warning, it doesn't mean it'll happen. Most of those are ridiculous anyway. It's just a windy day."

"I guess you're right.." I sighed, grabbing my sky blue blanket and tossing it over myself right before laying down. I suggested that Isaac lay down with me, so that's just what he did. However, before doing so, he grabbed a white blanket for himself causing me to chuckle slightly. He could've just used mine.

"You're laughing! Are you feeling better, yet?" He asked kindly and I shook my head, still paying close attention to what was happening outside. Suddenly my phone lit up with a new message and I reached over to pick it up. It was another warning. Scared, I showed the boy right next to me. "Calm down, Lee. They're just sending it again in case nobody happened to receive it."

"Or is it getting more intense?"

"It's not getting more intense."

"Or is it?"

Just then, a loud crash sounded from outside, right near us causing me to perk up and run over to my window. I looked around until I spotted what happened, a worried Isaac next to me. Our neighbor's tree had just fallen down. I looked over at the male next to me and crossed my arms. "Okay.. that means nothing.." I glared at him, causing him to flinch back. "How many times have I already promised you this? We're going to be okay! No tornado is coming near here. I swear."

"You swear?" I asked, not even looking at his face, staring more so at my feet. He lifted my head to look up at him and I bit my lip nervously.

"I swear. Once again." He chuckled, ruffling my hair. I smiled up at him and just nodded, still being appreciative of being alive.

And that's when it happened.

Something rammed right into our house within seconds of his swearing. Of his promise. My mind swirled and I couldn't comprehend what was going on before I blacked out, never to wake up again.

You.. you lied to me, Isaac.
