However, Caelan holds a dark secret that he has only told his inner circle about. He created the Dark Soul Ztar. He originally started the project under the name Rainbow Soul Star, in order to paint color back into the dead by using energy from the Rainbow Pain Stars. However, it was too much energy for the Rainbow Soul Star to handle, causing a malfunction that turned it into the Dark Soul Ztar.
Shyla: The Head NurseA pink Shy Gal with a blonde ponytail tied with a red bow with black polka dots. She's one of Caelan's inner circle and the head nurse of the Rainbow Resistance, so she knows that Caelan actually was the inventor of the Dark Soul Star that plagues the Mushroom Kingdom. Like the rest of Caelan's inner circle, she knows he had the best of intentions when creating it, and that he couldn't possibly have known it would go the horribly awry. As the head nurse, she cares for anyone who is injured, both physically and mentally. She wants to help Caelan get over his grief and guilt, but he always shuts her out.
Master Feng Koopa: The Master GeneralMaster Feng Koopa is an elderly Spiny Koopa with a long gray goatee and bushy eyebrows above squinted shut eyes. Master Feng Koopa was a master martial artist who taught students the way of Shell Kwan Do on Mt. Shell. The only student he ever taught who was not of the Koopa Clan, was Caelan himself. He saw promise in the young man when he came to his palace, a place where legend said only those with the fire of King Koopa in their hearts could set foot. Originally he thought this meant only those of the Koopa Clan could walk on his sacred grounds, but later realized it meant anyone with a burning passion could. He trained Caelan and later became his top general in the Resistance. He understands the mistakes Caelan has made, and is proud that he is trying to make things right, but still doesn't understand why he would even think of trying to toy with the laws of nature by bring back the dead.
Cap'n Bubba: The First and Last Line of DefenseCap'n Bubba is what's known as a Shy Bomb. He looks like a white Shy Guy with a black mask, a wind-up key, and a fuse on his head. He has a short temper, but for the most part tends to keep to himself. He can often be found raiding the base's larder, but gets mad when people accuse him of stealing food, claiming he was doing inventory. If that fails, he gets even madder, often causing him to explode. He's the leader of Caelan's defensive artillery, protecting the Rainbow Resistance's base from enemies.
Goombella: The Research ExpertGoombella was a student at the University of Goom, where Caelan showed off some of his inventions. She became infatuated with the scientist and jumped at the job opening as the Resistance's Research Expert. She was a little shocked to hear the Caelan created the Dark Soul Ztar, but understands that he did it out of the grief of losing his parents.
McTail: The Eye in the SkyMcTail is Goombella's younger half Tanoomba half-brother. As a Tanoomba, he can do things his sister can't, namely fly. He uses his tail to get a birds eye view of battlefields to see if there's any weaknesses in the enemy's defenses and reports back with his examination.
Duplinish: The TrainerDuplinish is a Duplighost of royal origin. Like a normal Duplighost, he can transform into any enemy he's defeated before. He uses this ability to give soldiers practice against the Dark Soul Ztar's cronies. Training with him can be a little unusual though, as he often bursts out in fits of laughter, which cause him to revert to his normal form. Even though he wants to help Bando as a spy, he knows that he's not able to keep a disguise long enough without laughing.
Bando: Spymaster and Expert ThiefBando was the leader of a band of thieves in a small town, until the town was attacked by the Dark Soul Ztar. His band was taken by the Dark Soul Ztar and turned dark. He joined the Rainbow Resistance in order to avenge his band, but secretly, he supports the Resistance fully, he doesn't want to see the world plunged into darkness. The only thing he loves more than money is his wife Violet.
Violet: Master of Disguise, Stealth, and DeceptionViolet is a Shadow Siren who seems to know Mario from a past adventure, though she refuses to talk about it. She cares for her husband Bando deeply and helps him in his spying missions by acting as his disguise. She can make it seem like he is repainted black and fool the Dark Soul Ztar's cronies.
Lady Bow: The House MaidenLady Bow is a Boo who has cared for Caelan ever since he was a newborn. She was originally his father's assistant, and after dying in the same accident that killed Caelan's father, she came back as a Boo. She knows that Caelan dearly misses his mother and father, but does not approve of his tampering with the laws of nature. She doesn't have the heart to tell Caelan that his father could have come back as a Boo, but chose not too, he was ashamed of himself for using his only son as a means of profit. If only he'd realized that sooner...
Princess PeachPrincess Peach is normally the damsel in distress, but not this time. She's joined the Rainbow Resistance in hopes of rescuing Mario and Luigi from the Dark Soul Ztar. However, she doesn't know what good she'll be, seeing as she not a skilled fighter, and she doesn't have any place in the military. She decided she can use her magic to help the injured soldiers, which is what she seems to be best at.
BowserBowser normally could care less about what happens to Mario, and he claims the only reason he's supporting the resistance is so the Dark Soul Ztar won't take over his kingdom, although he secretly doesn't want his longtime rival being evil, He feels as though Caelan is hiding something from him and Peach, but can't be sure what.
MarioAfter being freed, Mario is back to his cheery old self. He's determined to save his brother and stop the Dark Soul Ztar from painting the world black. He feels odd about Caelan, as though he's seen him somewhere before, but can't be sure.
The Dark Soul ZtarThe Dark Soul Ztar is an Artificial Star that was activated approximately three years ago by Caelan in a last ditch effort to bring his parents back to life. It's original function was to collect energy from the seven Rainbow Paint Stars and repaint dead creatures. However, Caelan forgot to take into account that when the seven colors of the rainbow mix, they create black. Upon activation, the energies mixed and created Black Paint Energy, which overloaded the machine's circuits and turned it into the Dark Soul Ztar.

Shadow LuigiShadow Luigi, like Shadow Mario is the result of the Dark Soul Ztar's influence on innocent Luigi's mind. Unlike his normal counterpart, Shadow Luigi is not easily frightened. For some odd reason, he likes to pretend he is a super villain called The Green Thunder, and often says "The Green Thunder strikes alongside The Red Lightning!" upon entering with Shadow Mario, much to his brother's annoyance.
