Hm. Have him head to Dawnstar. After they reach Morthal they will be heading there. That way the time/ distance is accounted for. Well..hold on. Let me look at my map.

Edit: Winter hold will be a better place. As Riften is a lot further then I thought. Both parties will meet in Winter hold about the same time.
