What are Nile River Equids?
Nile River Equids (NREs) are a sub-breed of Mustangs who were discovered to be living in Africa. They tend to range anywhere from 12 hh to 16 hh, while there have been known to be slightly smaller or larger. These horses tend to be able to sustain themselves on a minimal amount of water and food, they can travel long distances and have extraordinary stamina. The people who discovered these animals found that they were extraordinarily friendly and the braided tails are a sign that the NRE is domesticated or belongs to another person.

Show Name:: ÇwÇ Mockingbird
Barn Name:: Bird
Gender:: Stallion
Eye Color: Brown
Coat Color: Smokey Cream / Smokey Black Chimeric
Age:: 16 years
Personality::
Bird is the most kind and gentle stallion you will ever meet. He is completely bomb proof and is an amazing companion. Although he is a stallion, he is very well behaved and rarely acts out, and is more like a gelding in this way. Though when he does get to be a bundle of energy it is usually playful and nosy, but he does seem to keep himself in check most of the time. Bird often prefers to be ridden by females and prefers women when he is being groomed or fed. Though he does respond well to a few men with a gentle hand. He does enjoy all children, as long as they don't pull on his mane. He's a very kind soul and prefers to be in a quiet group of other horse's as compared to being alone.
Likes & Dislikes::
Bird loves Peppermint candies, fresh grasses, and carrots, but he also loves to indulge in jelly beans!! However, he doesn't like when he's being crowded into a corner, it makes him feel like something bad is going to happen. He also doesn't like to be in his stall all day and would much rather be out in pasture.
Discipline::
Bird is often used as a beginner or trail horse since he is so bombproof. Though he does make a great companion horse as well and will fit in well with a more nervous horse to keep them calm. We guess at one time that he was once used as a roping or cutting horse because of his muscular chest, neck, and front legs. He is always completely transfixed by cows. Though this was probably in his younger years, before his neglect.
Background::
Bird was taken in as a rescue horse from a group neglect case. He was found tied in a small stall with no food or water. Along with a couple mares and a gelding. This, we guess, is why he does not like to be crowded in a corner or cooped up in his stall. We also guess it is why he prefers women riders and caretakers over males. Though the trauma of his past has since been lifted and he makes an amazing all around horse. He's kind and gentle and has no mean bone in his body. He doesn't hate anyone and would rather do everything he can to please his riders then to fight them.
Mate/Companion::
Bird's mate and constant companion is a 14 year old mare named Sparrow. The two were found together and are the perfect match. They are like an elderly couple and seem to know everything about each other. Sparrow and Bird are known as grandma and grandpa on the farm and they are always so calm and good to each other and everyone around them. They are always seen grazing together or gently grooming one another. They don't like to ever be apart.
(Yes i know they are different species)
Short Story::
When we found them, they were all thin and dirty. The barn where they were kept was musty and dark, we could hardly see the colors of the horses. Feces, old hay, and some urine caked the floors of the stalls, the smell was horrible. We cut the ropes tying them there and led them outside. They all seemed to be so glad we were there to take care of them. They knew we were there to help. Once we got them out into the light, we began to see the severity of their situation. Their hips were visible and we could count most of their ribs and backbones. They lacked a lot of the muscle that they should have had and their manes and tails were raggedy, matted, and loosing some hair. But their eyes were wide and alert. They hadn't given up.
The worst one out of them, was the lone stallion. His short coat showed everything, he looked like a walking skeleton. He was just so happy to see us, no one would know his misery. One of the mares, we noticed, stood as close to him as she could, nuzzling his flank and almost hiding behind him. She was thin as well. But still bigger than the others.
As we loaded them onto the trailer to are them back to the ranch, the couple stuck close together. Keeping eachother calm and affectionately nuzzling and grooming eachother. It turned out the the pair was mated, they were bonded to eachother and it was probably what saved them the most. They used eachother, and hadn't given up.
They did make it, and now have names, the stallion we named Mockingbird and the mare we gave the named Sparrow. They are still just as close as they were when we found them, maybe even closer. They look nothing like they did when they came to the ranch. They have both filled out and since regained their muscle back. They are survivors.
