story
"No way am I going into that water," Kai said with just the faintest touch of fear in his voice.
"Come on, seriously?" Kai's friend, a similarly brightly colored kalon named Evan, groaned. "It'll be fun! Besides, did we really come out here for nothing?" he continued and gestured to the bright blue waters of the Caribbean.
"We certainly did not come out here for nothing. Didn't you love seeing all of the wild birds? And the humming bird that thought you were a flower? Anyways, everyone knows that there could be sharks in this water. I wouldn't risk it." Kai stated, matter of factly.
"You do know that you're more likely to die from falling coconuts than shark attacks. Those trees by the waterline are more deadly than any shark," Evan replied.
"So what? At least coconuts don't go out actively looking for people to kill!" retorted Kai.
"You know, I really thought you were over this fear when you said you wanted to go here. But, you know what, I am very much over trying to convince you to get rid of this irrational fear and actually enjoy stuff some times. Just go sit somewhere like you always do whenever we visit the beach".
"Fine, I will. You go enjoy being eaten by a shark". Kai didn't feel a single speck of remorse as his friend slowly waded into the water, alone. After all, it wasn't like Kai had suggested going to the beach; he had wanted to get another day of bird watching in. Sighing softly, he made his way over to the shade of a tall, vast palm tree and whipped out a mystery novel and a sun hat he'd brought beforehand.
The time passed in a blur. Kai didn't even notice as the sky gradually clouded over and the wind picked up. Eventually though, his progress in his mystery novel was cut short as Evan, soaking wet and draped on a bright blue towel, ran over to him.
"Kai, we should probably leave now. The waves are picking up and it looks like it may get rain," Evan said, slightly nervously. Kai reluctantly closed his book and stood up, brushing sand of his legs.
"If you say so," he replied. "I was just getting to the good part though". Just then however, Kai heard a startled shriek and watched as a sea bird, evidently carried by a strong gust of wind, slammed into the palm tree, which was swaying rapidly with the wind. Unhesitatingly, Kai ran toward it, leaving his book and hat behind.
"Kai!" Evan shouted behind him. "We REALLY need to go. It is most definitely not looking good out". Kai ignored him, concentrating on saving the sea bird. The next thing he saw was a spherical blur of brown coming towards him, and then, with a flash of pain, he passed out.
Kai awoke to the white walls of hospital- and to a concerned looking Evan standing over him. "You got hit with a coconut and got a pretty bad concussion. But, in luckier news, the bird was just fine apparently".
"Well," Kai said, a touch of laughter in his voice, "that's ironic".
