How do you adopt one? What do you mean by logging off?

You just log out of your account, go back to the adoption page, enter a pet name and owner nickname, and adopt.

Can you trade them to yourself?

you cant do anything with pets adopted while not logged into your account

Oh goodness no. You are playing as a guest so you actually don't get the pets. It's just to see what you would have gotten. If that was to happen all the pets are have on this site would be common/very common.

i was able to adopt last year and my account is 10 days older than yours not counting the year i joined.
