Inspiration Description (402 words)She curls her fingers around her experiment, thankful for the gardener's gloves that save her from its thorns. The experiment isn't some green liquid in a test tube, some sort of monstrous mutant plant, or anything you might see on a sci-fi channel; the experiment is just a rose.
The rose has a long stem the hue of a pretzel and fat green leaves. One of the leaves is very close to the woman's hand. If she wasn't wearing her gloves, it might tickle her. But of course, no one cares about the stem or leaves of a rose, nor does anyone care about the thorns. As far as anyone is concerned, those parts are just the backup dancers for the very best part of the rose: the flower.
She pulls the flower close to her face. It has petals that splay out from the center, sharpening into points at the ends, all of them the same lipstick-red color of the woman's jacket. The petals spiral out from the center, and as the woman looks at the rose, she wonders how so pretty a thing could exist in the dreary winter. Still, the woman isn't staring at the rose just because it's a pretty rose, for goodness' sake. She is staring at it because it is an experiment.
Last night, the woman dunked the rose in tapwater. Then, she hurried outside, placed the rose on a table that rests on her balcony, and now, as the sun rises, she can see that her experiment worked.
The woman wanted the water on the rose to freeze. The water certainly froze, and it froze into little white crystals that cover the rose. Each leaf is rimmed in a coat of lumpy white bits of ice. The stem is coated with tiny crystals.
The woman is very happy with all these crystals all over the rose, but what makes her the happiest are the ice crystals on the petals. Every last petal, from the small ones bunched up on the inside of the rose to the ones on the outside ringing the layers of spiraling petals within, all of them are lined with beautiful crystals of ice like tiny diamonds.
The woman looks down at her experiment, her rose, stares down at all of the ice forming little white spikes and shapes. For a moment, as the sun rises, she is quite happy.
Alright, that's my entry! Good luck everyone, and have a nice day!
