You have just received your first solo mission from the chief of police; Investigate a small abandoned town on the outskirts of a much larger, rich city and arrest the thief that has been causing problems in the area. You are excited to take on your first investigation alone, and want to prove to everyone that you have what it takes! Sounds like an easy enough mission, and you eagerly pack a few things and set out for answers.

^ back to main form ^

'you'/the character this story is following can be substituted as any gender/character, but is a kalon. All reference to them is done through 'your' point of view!

Find and Capture the Thief in the Lost Town.

    Age:
      Unknown

    Gender:
      Unknown

    Species:
Unknown; reports of a large bird, possibly a crow or raven

    Last Seen:
      Never

Sighing, you look down at your watch. Almost 7am. I should be getting there soon, you repeat to yourself for the third time this morning and continue to drag your feet forward. Towards what, you were unsure, but you were sent on a mission to discover whatever it may be.
The rest of the investigation team refused, claiming that it was too dangerous. Most of the higher ups agreed that it would be ‘good experience’ for the new recruits, resulting in where you are now. Digging into your pocket, you take out a now crumpled report and glance it over again. "Find and arrest the thief in the Lost Town. Age: Unknown. Gender: Unknown. Species: Unknown; multiple reports of a large bird, some claim to be a crow or a raven. Last seen: Never." The list was neat and organized, however it provided no useful information for your mission.

You clicked your tongue, shoving the paper back into your pocket and running over possible situations once you arrived in the town. Hoping this will be an easy and quick mission; the town finally comes into view. Unconsciously, you begin to walk a bit faster, hoping to grab a bite to eat before you begin another long day of work.

As you get nearer to the town, you realize why everyone was reluctant to take the mission. You walk down the crumbling cobblestone path that you assume is, or was, a road. Even in the pale morning light, you can see the dirty, broken buildings and signs that have seen better days many, many years ago. It reminded you of those old haunted, abandoned ghost towns that you see in mystery shows and spooky video games. Maybe, you thought, it would not be a problem to let the thief continue to wander around this deserted town? Who was it going to steal from anyway?
But as soon as the thought left your mind, you see shuffling movement in the buildings as dim, flickering lights began to switch off, welcoming the morning sun and a new day. But the you couldn’t shake the thought from your head, what is there to steal in a town like this? Guess you will have to figure that out.

Your first task is food, if you can find any. Glancing around, you spot a shabby looking bakery in the middle of town and quickly make your way over to it. Walking in, you are met with the warm smell of freshly baked bread. Your ears perk up, and can't help but stare at all the delicious looking baked goods displayed around the room. You're stunned! It's as if you walked into a four-star bakery in the middle of a warzone. "Oh, welcome hon. I don't recognize 'ya, from out of town?" Spinning around, you see a short Kalon walk out from a room behind the counter. She looked young, but carried an air of experience and comfort around her. It was comforting and reassuring in a strange way. You shake your head, and she spoke again, "What brings a traveler to a place like this? There isn't much to see in this town, in fact most Kalons stay away from it, especially around this time of the month".

This perked your interest, and you wonder if it has anything to do with the thief. You offer a single question, "Why?" She looked taken aback. "Haven't you heard?", she gasped, "The Silent Crow favors the nights with no moonlight. Easier to stay hidden, 'ya know?" She chuckled, but you were confused. This was a start, definitely something to look further into. But first, you flicked your tail across the floor and turned back to the cases of glorious pastries, which the female Kalon immediately responded with a "Oh, where are my manners! What can I get for you, hon?" You point at a rather heavenly looking piece strudel with a sticky frosting drizzled over the top, and you try to stop your stomach from growling. She laughed, opening the case and handing you the pastry wrapped with a thin sheet of paper. Reaching into your bag, you pull out several pieces of shiny coins and offer them to the bakery owner, who looked obviously stunned.

"Oh! That's very kind of you, but I don't accept money in this bakery. Kalons who can't get food for themselves come here for some food throughout the day, so I bake the best I can for anyone who needs it. If you insist, then who am I to refuse your kind gesture, but your meal requires no payment." She offered a wide, genuine smile in your direction and makes no motion to take the coins from your hand. You can't help but wonder just what kind of town this is? Maybe you thought too low of the Kalons living here from your initial introduction of the town mere minutes before. A sudden rush of sorrow runs through you and you push the coins into her hand, not taking no for an answer. Immediately, her face lights up and she gives you a bigger smile than you ever thought possible. “Thank you very much for your donation, it will go far in purchasing more ingredients. Really, if you need anything else, I’ll happily assist you with anything I can manage” Taking a bite of the strudel, you mull over your options; you could thank her and leave, looking for clues on your own, or you could ask her what she knows about this Crow character. You go for the latter;

“Forgive me, but I think I remember you mentioning something about ‘The Silent Crow’? What is that?” You calmly asked, taking another bite of your breakfast. “Oh,” she started, a little hushed than before, “it’s a myth that holds this town together. On the three darkest days of the month, the day before, the day of the new moon, and the day after, The Crow brings gifts to those who have been less fortunate during the month. Why exactly, we’re unsure, but he’s what keeps us going in this tiny warn down town.” Huh. Not what you were expecting, but you’re intrigued. Any and all information about this Crow character you can get is good information, right? It might not be related the mission, but it might be worth looking into later on.

“Have you ever seen it?” You ask, your strudel almost gone by now. Her smile fades, and her gaze shifts to the wall, then to the floor. After a moment, she responds after deep thought, “No, nobody has. Nobody knows him other than The Silent Crow, so we’re not exactly sure what he is either. I guess nobody has ever been concerned about his appearance with all the good he brings to us.” Another chuckle, and she shakes her head as if in deep thought. The door to the bakery opened, and another Kalon walked in. Immediately, she patted your arm reassuringly and gave you one last smile before walking over and greeting the other Kalon. Swallowing your last bit of strudel, you wave a good bye to the generous shop owner, who called over her shoulder to you as you open the door to leave, “If you ever need anything else, this shop is always open to anyone who needs it!” With an unexpected smile on your face, you step back onto the broken cobblestone road. This mission might not be that bad after all.

A Lead

Postby SilverSamurai » Sat Dec 10, 2016 11:10 am

Or that’s what you thought in the moment. You have spent the last hour searching around town for any signs of robberies or misplaced property, but not even a feather seems out of place. Frustration begins to set in and you begin to pace in front of an old house. I can’t go back without information, what am I going to do? Your mind is racing with negative outcomes, when you’re jolted back to reality when the door of the home opens and a kit steps out. Surprised, you do nothing but look them over; they don’t appear to be older than 5, and going by their watery eyes with tears on the verge of spilling out, they seem upset. Then you notice the broken toy they are dragging behind them, a ragged stuffed animal drags in the dirt behind the child, limp and full of holes and tears.

The mother appears in the door way, and the child looks up to her in a silent question, and the mother only nods. The tears begin to fall as the child places the stuffed doll in the garbage pile on the curb, covering their eyes and running back their mother for comfort. You feel compelled to help the poor child. “Excuse me,” you start, glancing up to the mother but not inviting yourself any closer. You wait for the mother to look at you before you continue, “Anything I can do to help?” You gesture to the broken stuffed toy the child had just thrown away, and the mother took a moment before she understood and shook her head slowly. “Thank you, such a kind soul you are to ask, but I don’t think that will be needed.” You nod, though unsure what exactly she meant. She seemed to pick up on your confusion and continued, “The Crow is coming tonight”

Ah. More about this Crow guy. Perhaps you should ask for a bit more information this time. “Forgive me, but I’m from out of town and am unfamiliar with ‘The Crow’, who is that?” Of course you already have a vague idea of whom they are, thanks to the kind bakery lady, however you wanted a different perspective. The mother opened her mouth to respond, but you were surprised when the child turned around and yelped the response, “He’s th’ gweatest! He brings gifts when our things bweak to replace them!” You smile at the child, and the mother looks down at her kit and brushes the messy hair out of their face. She picks them up and turns towards you once more, “It’s her nap time, would you care to come in and chat for a bit? We don’t have much, but I’m sure I could find something.”

For the second time today, you find yourself stunned at the generosity this town has to offer. You wonder if the higher ups will believe you if you tell them. “Sure, I’d appreciate that” You follow her into the home, carefully closing the door behind you, “And thank you for your generous offer, but I’m quite fine at the moment.” She nodded and carried her daughter down the hall. You waited in the living area, taking a seat and glancing around. There wasn’t much, actually there was hardly anything at all besides a couch, table and a few pictures, but it was homey in its own way.

The mother hurried back and sat on the other end of the sofa, her soft gaze resting on you, “Now then, what were we talking about?” You smile, “You were, well, your kit was telling me about The Crow” “Oh yes,” she recalled, “The Crow visits on the darkest days of the month. Today should be the first night of his visits” She said reassuringly. But a question was still lingering on your mind, and you decided to ask, “Why the three darkest day of the month?” She shrugs. Great. Nobody seems to know. “But,” She offers, “The days he visits are the only days you will see a crow in the sky.” You nod, understanding the connection to the name now. “Thank you,” You stand, getting ready to leave, “it was very kind of you to invite me into your home, thank you for the chat as well, but I should be heading out now.” You bow your head to her and make your way towards the door. “Any time at all, thank you for keeping me company today.” She smiled, and as you closed the door and walked back down the road, you wonder where all the generous smiles come from in a town like this.

▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁

You decided to take a break after a bit more searching. You asked everyone you came into contact with in town, which was only a handful, and was only met with the same hospitality and no signs of a thief. Or even any wrong doing for that matter. You grow frustrated and throw your arms behind you, lying back on the dying grass and shut your eyes. Only now do you notice how your feet ache from the long journey here and you definitely are not looking forward to the trek back. You notice the sun beginning to dip towards the horizon, casting a orange hue across everything the light touched, and you briefly wondered if you should find somewhere to stay. From where you lay at the outskirts of the village, the town looked just as it had this morning when you arrived; dirty, crumbling and poor, and yet the Kalons here had something that most wealthy cities could never grasp. With a heavy sigh, you remember your mission. Is there really a thief? What could a thief hope to take, their hope? you chuckle at the thought and open your eyes, about to stand and head back into town; and then you see it. A single crow flapped silently through the sky, heading towards the thick woods just behind you. Jumping up, you run as fast as you can in attempt to follow it.

The Thief

Postby SilverSamurai » Sat Dec 10, 2016 11:12 am

Twigs snap underfoot as you run through the thick woods, never loosing sight of the black corvid soaring overhead. However this became an increasingly difficult task as you began having trouble differentiating shadows and holes on the ground due to the decreasing amount of sunlight, both from the thick treetops and the night creeping over the landscape. You trip a few times, but never fall. You are determined to find the source of this mysterious bird, and the only thing you can hear is the heavy pounding of your heart in your ears.

You finally fall onto dry earth as the ground becomes uneven and begins to slope, and just as you thought you have lost sight of the bird, more flock overhead. You get up and continue on your path to find the bird, slower and more confident this time, making sure not to trip again. Only a few minutes pass until you find yourself in a wide clearing, gaps in the treetops overhead would normally filter moonlight brightly into the clearing, but tonight there was no such luck. You squint your eyes, trying to take in the scene better, but were met with the sound of feathers ruffling and… are those footsteps? You take a step back, but with your luck, step on possibly the loudest twig you have ever heard crunch underfoot, and you stop dead in your tracks. You immediately feel eyes on you from all direction, and your skin crawls. Why, you were unsure, but you had a feeling you were about to find you.

On the far end of the clearing, you make out a figure. You can’t tell what it is by its strange silhouette, but it kind of looks like… a Kalon? An oversized crow? You are unsure, and are not about to stick around and find out. Or at least you thought. You were mere seconds from turning tail and getting a good nights rest until you see the shine sparkle dimly on its tail. Yep, it’s a Kalon. You mentally sigh. Well, now you have to ask the Kalon why they are in the woods in the middle of the night. That is until the mysterious Kalon hurries out of the clearing, in the direction of where you just came from. Towards the Lost Town.

Trying to keep up with it, you are careful this time to watch where you are going as to not trip and seriously hurt yourself. You almost loose them a few times, as you almost caught yourself chasing a shadow, but are quickly put back on track by the dim shine the tail shines give off every so often. The Kalon came to a stop near the edge of the woods, and instead changed directions and headed towards the more populated town to the west. Unsure of what to think at this point, you silently follow them unnoticed to wherever they were headed.

Upon arriving in the much more populated, and much more wealthy, town, they stop and seem to make a decision before blending into the shadows once more and creeping into the town. You didn’t follow them this time, but climbed a tree high enough so you could overlook the town while remaining hidden. You scan the area for your suspect and when you finally find them, your eyes widen at what you see. The crow-like Kalon was… stealing. They were slipping into open homes and taking a few very specific items, careful never to drop anything. But that wasn’t really what made your jaw drop. No, it was when the crows from earlier swooped to the scene and took a few parts from the Kalon to carry for them, so the Kalon wouldn’t have their hands full of things. Bravo, mysterious Kalon. Bravo.

After what seemed to be the longest day of your life, you are relieved that you finally found and have evidence to complete your mission. This shouldn’t take much longer then. After about an hour of very specific object stealing, the Kalon begins to makes their way out of the populated town, and you climb down from your tree as carefully as possible to continue following them. You decided that you would wait a bit to upright arrest them, as you should, but curiosity got the better of you in this case. The objects seemed oddly specific, and they were too careful about the whole process for it to be upright thievery out of desperation. No, there was some motive behind this.

Image
You carefully follow the strange crow-like Kalon back to the edge of the Lost Town, and are surprised when they stop under a large tree and gather all the things they have stolen. The crows have already dropped off the share that they were carrying, and the pile was much less than you initially thought they had stolen. You crawl into the shadows, hiding yourself while being close enough to see what the other was up to. They first organized the piles, from wires and cables, to types of material and in some cases even the size of some items. Next they… pulled out a list? There looked to be words written on the page, but you are too far away to see what it said. But the other Kalon went down the list and began checking things off while occasionally glancing down at the stolen item piles. You had no idea what they were doing, or why, but the urge to jump from your hiding spot and arrest them on the spot was growing by the second.

It wasn’t until they began putting the items together, or in this case reconstructing some items to make new ones that something clicked in your head. Conversations from earlier in the day flash through your head, and everything begins to make sense. The Silent Crow that brings gifts to those less fortunate, using the cover of the three darkest nights of the month to deliver the makeshift look alike of valuables that had broken. You are now faced with one of the hardest decisions you have ever made. Do you arrest the thief, as to follow your mission and to uphold the law, but take away the last remaining hope of the poor Kalons living in this broken town; or do you leave them be and pretend you never saw anything, letting a thief go and risk losing your job, but letting the people of the Lost Town live in a happiness that few Kalons actually knew. You shake your head, not wanting to think about it just yet. You decide to watch them for a bit longer.

After about an hour of fiddling with the scraps of stolen items, the Kalon looks at the list once again and nods in approval of its work. They opened their mouth to the sky, and you jumped when the only sound that came out was a throaty caw. Not quite a crow, but somewhere between that and a growl. Whatever it was, the murder of crows soon appeared once again to snatch the items off the ground, and the flock swooped into town, led by the mysterious crow-Kalon.

You did not follow them into town, but instead stayed by the tree to overlook the town. Just as you had suspected, the Kalon and the flock silently darted through the town, dropping off specific items at doorstops of most of the homes. You sigh and run your fingers through your hair and look up to the sky. There were a few clouds drifting across the night sky, and it is eerily dark. Still not wanting to think about the decision that you know you will have to make tonight, you take a seat in the cold grass and wait for your suspect to return from their strange habit.

The Crow

Postby SilverSamurai » Sat Dec 10, 2016 11:15 am

Roughly twenty minutes pass until the crow-Kalon returns, who is now empty handed. The corvids have flown back into the forest, and only the Kalon remained. Perfect, just where you wanted them. You slowly get to your feet, not wanting to startle the other, and take a step towards them. Immediately, their ears twitch towards you and it seems that they have acknowledged your presence. You take this opportunity to step out from the shadow of the tree and confront the crow-Kalon, who is by now ruffling their fur up to look more intimidating. Ah, not very social. Or perhaps afraid of being caught?

“You, Kalon. Who are you.” You demanded and took another step closer to the other, but the crow-kalon did not budge an inch, but instead stood a bit taller. They didn’t respond, and you repeated yourself, “Who are you, thief.” They flinched at the tone of your voice, but remained silent. You stand off with the mysterious Kalon until they open their mouth, but nothing comes out. Well, the seem to be making throaty murmurs, but nothing that can be understood. An idea pops into your head, and you take out your journal. You normally wrote down updates and leads for your missions, but you threw it along with a pen towards the other. They didn’t move, staring directly at you until you took a step back, showing them that you were giving them a chance. They nodded and took the notebook.

They scribbled down quite a bit before throwing it back at you, quite harshly might you add. You pick up the notebook and read whatever it is they have to say: ‘Greetings, snoopy traveler,’ You curl your nose a bit and glance at the other, who only smirks in return. You continue reading the page. ‘I know you watched me tonight, and I am not going to apologize. I do what I need to do to keep the town at peace and happy, and I am sure you have already witnessed firsthand the kindness that everyone in town shares. I know stealing is wrong, but what else can I give to those who have nothing? I think of it as ‘sharing the wealth’, as most of the things I steal are never noticed as missing. But, do as you must.’

You look up at the dark Kalon, who is staring at you with a soft gaze. Quickly, they extend their hand, motioning for the notebook once more. You hand it to them, curious as to what they could add to the confession. They hand it back quickly, and you read what they wrote and circled at the bottom, ‘The name is Corbin. Though most who know of me only call me The Silent Crow, or just Crow. Feel free to use any. As you must have noticed by now, but I am mute to most. I have limited communication with crows and the like, but I apologize as I am unable to speak your language.’. You nod towards him in understanding, and he twitches his tail. “Well,” you start, “I have not made up my mind yet, but will mull it over for the next several hours. You are to wait here, or somewhere I can easily find you. Got it?” You sharply state your decision, shoving the notebook back into your pocket and he nods his understanding. He lets out a mumble of growls, and you guess it to be something of a promise. You turn tail and head into town for a last investigation.

Investigation

Postby SilverSamurai » Sat Dec 10, 2016 11:16 am

When you arrive in town, the sun is starting to crawl into the sky. A dim glow is cast over the town, and you can not believe how long you have been awake. You make a mental note to take the next day or two off to catch up on sleep. You head to the bakery, mainly to retrace your steps from yesterday, but also because you can’t ignore the rumbling in your belly. Knocking on the worn down door before entering, you once again enter the heavenly building. “Welcome, how can I help you?” A voice calls from another room, and you recognize it as the baker you had chatted with. “Oh! Welcome back, what can I get for you today?” She smiled warmly as she recognized you, and you give her a smile back. “The usual” You chuckle, and she laughs as she picks out a freshly baked strudel and hands it to you. You can’t help but take a bite of it right away, and you seem to have forgotten just how heavenly it tastes.

“Find what you were looking for?” She asked, closing the pastry case and looking up at you. “Yeah, I think so.” You say between bites, and she hums in response. She opens the door to her shop and steps outside, and for a moment you think that she just up and left. You walk towards the door to see where she went, but find her crouching on the stairs, a hand over her mouth as she tried to hold back her tears. “Are you all right?” you offered your free hand to her, but she only turned to face you and show you a sort of necklace. The curb had a single black feather curled in the cobblestone, and you know that this is Corbin’s doing. “I-” she tries to find her words, but is unable to. She tries again, more successful this time, “This was my grandmother’s necklace. When she died, she gave it to me. A few weeks ago, it got caught on one of the mixers in the kitchen, and it shattered the chain as well as a few of the beads. This…” She closely examined the necklace before holding it close to her chest, “I knew the Crow would find a way to fix this…” She stood up and smiled her bright smile, putting on the necklace and walking back into the shop.

You don’t know what to say. You know that those beads and chain are stolen, and it is not the original necklace, but something in you doesn’t want to take away this happiness. You begin to understand what Corbin meant. You smile at her, and offer her some words of sympathy before politely excusing yourself from the bakery.

When you step outside, you see the mother you had talked to yesterday stepping out of her home and decide to head there next. You call out a greeting and she looks up, waving her hand in response. You shuffle within chatting distance and she welcomes you, “Good morning!” “Morning” you respond back, lack of sleep evident in your voice. “Oh my, didn’t get any sleep dear?” She sounds concerned, moved to touch your arm gently, “Do you need a place to rest? You are welcome to rest up a bit here if you’d like” You wave your hands, “No, thank you for your offering though. That’s very kind of you. However I think I am leaving soon, so a good nights rest isn’t too far off.” You give her a sleepy smile, and she sighs. “A mother always worries” she responds, and turns around to walk back into her home. She signals for you to wait a moment, so wait you do.

She is gone for but a minute until she returns with her kit in her arms. The young Kalon is rubbing sleep from her eyes, and she puffs her cheeks as her mother sets her onto the cold ground. She suddenly lights up and spins around, rushing towards the curb. You watch as the kit nearly trips over her own feet in excitement as she crouches on the side of the road, picking something up. She jumps into the air in joy, holding a stuffed toy in her small hands. If you hadn’t known better, you would have thought it to be the same one that was thrown out the day before. But you knew better, both because you had seen the delivery hours before and from the obsidian feathers still clinging to the stuffed animal.

“Mommy, look! Look!” The kit shouted while spinning in circles, “The Crow came! He weally did!” She crashed into her mother’s legs, and the mother picked up her daughter once more, the both of them laughing. Once again you felt your heart tighten. You knew what it really was. It was stolen, and a replacement at that. But… Once again, you politely excuse yourself and say goodbye to the welcoming family, and decide to meet up with every Kalon in town who you have talked to yesterday.

And sure enough, you are met with the same story all across town. The entire town seemed engulfed in happiness upon having something meaningful to them replaced. You knew you needed to speak out, to report the thief. It was your mission, and overall the lawfully right thing to do. But you just can’t bring yourself to do it.

Decision

Postby SilverSamurai » Sat Dec 10, 2016 11:20 am

Climbing your way back up the hill on the far side of town, you frown when Corbin is nowhere to be found. Ah, and you wanted to trust him too. Your thought did not last long, as you heard a small ‘caw’ from just within the woods. Turning towards the sound, you see Corbin laying in the shade of a tree in attempt to remain unseen. He makes no attempt to move as you walk towards him, your head hung low as you let out a heavy sigh.

He makes a higher pitched chirp as a greeting, and you sit next to him. He looks long and hard at you, and you run your hand through your hair in frustration. You remember that he cannot speak, and pass him your journal if he wants to say anything. He reaches out for it and scribbles something down before passing it back to you. ‘well?’ Hah. So he was waiting for you to make up your mind. “I…” You get to your feet and overlook the town, the sun climbing ever higher into the sky to begin yet another day. “I’m leaving.” You wait a moment for Corbin to finish writing his response. ‘Aren’t you going to turn me in? I’m a thief. You have evidence even.’ he wrote. You responded calmly, “No. I’m not denying that you are a thief. But if I took you away from this town… Then what am I?” You close your eyes, finalizing your decision.

’Thank you, stranger. This is farewell, as I do not enjoy making myself known.’. You nod and take the journal back as he offers it to you. He stands and for the first time you’ve seen him, he steps into the dim sunlight. For the first time you take in his unshadowed appearance; he is slightly taller than yourself and is thin under all the extra fur, and despite his darkly colored fur, there’s a certain gleam of purity in his eyes. He nods and makes his way back into the thick woods where he seems to call home, and he waved his tail in a last farewell. You watch him vanish into the thick underbrush and tangles of branches until you turn to make your leave as well.

Image

You take one last stroll through the Lost Town, taking in everything that has happened in the last twenty-four hours. Your eyelids feel heavy and burn with the need for sleep, and you can almost feel your soft bed waiting for you. But… something in you makes you want to stay in this town. You’re not sure what brought the idea to you in the first place, as this is not exactly a vacation destination, or even a place most would willingly travel to for a short time frame. Something just… connected here, and you want to be apart of it.

You quickly make up your mind and make arrangements to purchase a somewhat newly built home on the far end of town, and you make your way back towards headquarters to give your mission status and to gather your things for the move. You take out the crumpled report from your pocket and glance it over. Mulling over what you are going to say to your supervisors makes your head hurt more than your feet, so you decide to improvise when you get there.

Turning In

Postby SilverSamurai » Sat Dec 10, 2016 11:22 am

“What did you find on your mission?” Your supervisor asks as she takes a seat in the chair on the opposite side of the desk. You fidget in your seat, still unsure what to say exactly. I let the thief go? No. Definitely not. I didn’t find anything? Ah, but she might take me off the team. I can’t say? … worse than option one. So your best option is… “I could not find any signs of a thief, Chief. I apologize. But I did find a few clues.” Your voice is a bit shaky, and you decide this to be a good time to hand in your updated report sheet:

Find and Capture the Thief in the Lost Town.

    Age:
      Unknown

    Gender:
      Unknown Possibly male

    Species:
Unknown; reports of a large bird, possibly a crow or raven Crow

    Last Seen:
      Never

Her eyes narrow as she reads over the report. She doesn’t seem entirely disappointed, but she could be much happier with your conclusions. “Very well.” She murmured. “You’re dismissed. Take the rest of the day off. Good work, recruit.” She doesn’t look at you, and you can hear the disappointment in her voice. You speak up in a hushed voice, not sure how to come clean with your decision. “Uh, actually…” She looks up at you, and you unconsciously take a step back. “I’m moving and can not continue with this position.” You bow to her, mostly so you don’t have to look her in the eye. “I’m very sorry.”

You wait for her snappy response, but it never comes. “Very well,” is her only response, and you take a chance to glance up, “I wish you well with your move.” You can’t believe it would be that easy. You nearly run to your room to pack your things, eager for the move. It has been almost a week since you have been back, and something just doesn’t feel right since you have gotten back. You could not put your finger on it, bit for some reason the broken, empty streets of the Lost Town seemed more welcoming than this place. You gather your things and prepare for the move.

▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁

Just a few days later, you are unpacking your things onto the dirt-covered floor of your new home. It’s not perfect in any way, but you have never felt more at home. Your return was much welcomed; everyone greeted you and offered to help you unpack your things. The lady in the bakery made you a box of strudels to welcome you to town, and you can’t help but smile. Even though you have only been away for two weeks, you’ve missed this.

The next new moon came quickly, and you find yourself sitting outside your home staring at the sky. The stars shine without pollution, and it looks like something out of the books you studied in astronomy; it was the beautiful. A shiver ran down your spine as a cold wind blew from the north. Winter was coming. You turn to head back into your home, ready for bed as a yawn escaped, but you took one last look at the sky, and you swear you see the outline of a crow gliding silently through the night.

You can't help but wonder when you'll hear from The Crow next.
